As the old thread is nearly full here it is time a brand new thread is born. All we need now is a new vomit face emoticon MN towers!

We are a bunch of past, present and future Confused HG sufferers (along with worried spouses, family and friends) who use this thread to support, listen and discuss the dreaded pregnancy illness that is HG (hyperemesis gravidarum).

There are no limits on how much moaning posters can do nor can anyone's symptoms or experiences be tmi.

The old thread has been a great support to many of us and we hope this new thread carries on the great work started by old thread founder and HG guru LucindaE. She still maintains, supports and clucks Grin around the thread daily even though her own experience of HG is thankfully over.

So with no further incoherent rambling from me on with the new thread eh?

I never realised how handy it was to have GP surgery at top of my (short) street until I had HG, then a new baby!

MotherofPearl · 14/04/2011 16:10

Littlewizz could you bear a hot water bottle on your feet? I've been finding that quite nice. Even though I'm freezing I hate the stuffiness of the heating being on, but a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket is lovely. Yes I was hospitalised with 3+ ketones, don't know how I would have been able to hydrate myself without IV as couldn't keep down so much as a sucked-on ice cube. Hope you manage to get some fluids in.

theonlyhb2 · 14/04/2011 17:00

rant alert

f***g HG! I think I am having a relapse :( was OK yesterday as off and didnt do much, although finding something I want to eat & that doesn't give me heartburn is a mission. Back to work today, boss said I cant come back full time as have been ill, 10-4 still for me (I lasted a day full time!) I was annoyed about it this morning but just got home and puked up loads so perhaps he (yes, a man!!!) is sensible to say to review again after next week!

I am so gutted. I dont want to be sick. I dont feel as bad as I did in the beginning, I dont even feel nauseous, just suddenly I know I am going to puke and out it comes. I just want to go to work and train my assistant to do all the things I do, get some commission and relax from 15th July! Now I am worried I cant work, cant get commission I need to be able to relax from then! Grrrrrr.

Anti sickness tablet for me now, then bed. Midwife tomorrow, then interviews again in afternoon, then home and bed again. Doesn't sound much to a normal person really but I am dreading it!

Best get making jelly for breakfast again :( :( :(

LucindaE · 14/04/2011 17:07

Whizz I am glad you are feeling a little better, and congrats on frankfurter in sauce (would make me sick without Hyperemesis, but I'm glad you enjoyed it!) I'm glad that Dr was sympathetic, too. Cocoanuts and Bike It's odd how the way they react to dehydration seems to vary so much. What energy to clean kitchen after being so ill, with a bile run in between...Bike It must be great having a dr's surgery in your road! All good luck with the prescription, surely after being hospitalised again there couldn't be a problem with it! Grandma So agree about Bike's experience with awful Dr!
ElliottsMummy platelets - again I have to plead complete ignorance. I suppose that surely hardly eating anything for weeks must have a big affect on the blood. Anyone else more knowledgeable?
MaryLou how are you feeling now? Have you been put on any other meds?
NitNat and TheOnly I hope your relapses were temporary?
Caramel Bouncing on that ball?!
Pearl I am (looks round in shame) given to hot water bottles in winter, without the excuse of ill health, so with Hyperemesis on a chill spring day
sounds a really good idea, comforting. Is the pink grapefruit doing OK?Cake how are things?
Grumblin Quiet from you. I do hope you are not feeling too bad. How far along are you now?
Fluffy Quick scratch behind ears!!
Anyone I've rudely overlooked I hope you are chugging along OK...

I also live on the same street as my doctors :) Although it is moving in the autumn... To the other end of the road! Grin

Have had two good days since my bad day where I have managed on only one tablet in the mornings and been out to lunch with family but today I'm back on two, potentially three. Your body soon lets you know if you aren't doing things right.

We are having take out burgers tonight as I couldn't face cooking or eating what I planned to cook and DH was feeling lazy (his day off today) Oh how I hate all this junk food. I just wish I longed for vegetables, and nourishing foods. I really woory I am not nourishing my baby properly. I am not taking any pregnancy supplements as tablet taking is so difficult.

On the plus side my home doppler is picking up a much louder heartbeat than last week so I know it's growing in there :) 16 week check monday. And FIL's funeral Tuesday Sad How I hope I'm having a good sickness day on tuesday...

Boosaphena · 14/04/2011 20:30

Evening fellow pukers.
I hope everyone is having a good one.
I too was hospitalised on 3+++ keytones, it had increased to 4++++ by the time I got there, I had a crap man doctor who told me to 'give it one more night' but as soon as mw saw me she went mental and demanded I went in.
Glad I'm not the only frankfurter freak (as dh calls it!) I quite like them dipped in brown sauce but really have to be in the mood.
I'm sorry im rubbish with names, I'm replying on my phone and can't scroll up.
I took your advice and have had a couple of sympathetic friends with children over to help busy my dc's this week - the distraction has been nice, but it is quite exhausting.
I find myself dreading this time of the evening, I only have a couple of hrs where I feel 'ok' ( this eve I only have an upset tum) but fairly soon I'll have to go to bed to conserve energy and start the whole miserable process again. I dont want to feel sorry for myself but I do.
Having mil down was dreadful. I felt v unwell when she got here and had just puked everything up, and all she kept asking was what were we going to do as we couldn't sit in all day. She even suggested going to the bloody pub. AS IF!!!!

I have found a little thing that has helped, which I thought I'd share, teeth brushing is always dreadful but I've bought a toothbrush with a much smaller head, it doesn't fill up my mouth as much and really helps. I've also changed from colgate to aquafresh as it's not so strong. This might help someone!

Wishing everyone a relaxing evening x

BikeRunSki · 14/04/2011 20:33

I have been using one of DS's old toothbrushes Boo.

grumblinalong · 15/04/2011 09:01

Hello,

lucinda I'm 31 weeks now. Home straight! Going to get the new cot and car seat tomorrow as DH gave me a 'talking to' this week and said I have to get a grip and start believeing that this baby is going to appear soon, I've been too superstitious/paranoid/in denial to buy it even a vest so far!

nitnat and theonly tell me it was only a temporary relapse?

caramel How the hell is it going? Are you eagerly awaiting non HG world? You'll be able to eat properly in the next few weeks! Hurray!

coconuts You have a home doppler? How exciting and posh! I would love one but DH would get so sick of it because I'd be 'checking' all the time.

boo Your MIL sounds utterly ignorant about HG, the pub ugh, youck doesn't she know about smells!

everyone else hope you are all ok. I'm off to docs in an hour to discuss being sterilized and I'm still in my dressing gown (pukey morning) so better run. Have a good weekend everyone!

I've not posted on here for a while but been looking every now and again. So sorry there's some new HG sufferers! It's so miserable and I remember not being able to think about anything other than when I was next going to vomit. Not actually physically puked since 16 weeks - am now 28 weeks! Nausea has persisted although manageable. The more tired I am the more nauseous I feel. Just had 10 days off work and now feel recharged! Thought I would post today to say that despite throwing up from week 6 to 16, losing over a stone in weight and one hospital admission I am carrying an ernomous baby!! Had to have a growth scan at Leeds this week and baby's growth measurements are off the chart! Nothing wrong with him - he's completely healthy, just big (estimated birth weight of 10 - 10 half pounds - eek!)! I was tested for diabetes which I don't have. Consultant said I must have a good grow bag! I'm amazed that despite being so ill and sick he's obviously managed to get everything he needs! Was hoping that this post would reasure all those suffering that the baby is obviously not affected!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 15/04/2011 10:35

Grumbling - Posh? Me? Hahaha! My doppler was only £20 from amazon, but I got it second hand off ebay for £8 - I love a bargain! Works brilliantly. And it has a recording cable so you can record it to your PC and send it to people who are remotely interested Grin I made myself promise not to use it more than twice a week. I have been good so far :) It is amazing to be able to hear the hb so easily.

LucindaE · 15/04/2011 12:03

Lottie That is so encouraging for everyone who is worrying - 10.10lbs? Wowzers and I do hope that whopper just slides out...I am glad puking has stopped, but sorry you still feel sick that's miserable.
Boo so sorry you were back in hospital,4++++ that sounds alarming, I think we must give you a prize for that, though not sure if Fluffy rivalled it at one time? sorry about insensitive MIL - the smell of beer? Envy EnvyEnvy, used as green faces, not envy!
Cocoanuts Just wondered,is it possible to get preg vitamin drops? Hugs to you, if acceptable, because I was the world's greatest worrier too...
TheOnly Oh, dear, that heartburn. It sounded as though that man is talking sense, you do sound very tired, poor you.
Grumblin Congrats on 31 weeks! Oh, dear, puking still going on, I am really sorry, I keep hoping it will stop for you, and it doesn't.
How are Cake and everyone?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 15/04/2011 13:22

Lucinda - thanks, I'm not sure, I'm going to ask at my MW appointment monday (16weeks eek!) whether she would say I need them as I am probably deficient in most vitamins and minerals and definitely anaemic. So will be prescribed iron pills which will add to my never ending constipation Hmm

Also to add to Lottie's reassurance, DD was 9lb 5oz and I was sick all the way through with her. No idea how she grew that big! So far this one I'm trying to grow now has always measured ahead of the dates so we'll see. They say they get bigger.... Ouch.

lottieb22 · 15/04/2011 15:58

Hey coconuts - I saw my consultant at 16 weeks and she said she didn't really care what I ate at that point as I'd been so sick and was more bothered about fluid intake! I started eating again around 16 weeks and 16 - 20 weeks all I wanted to eat was peanut butter and cheeseburgers! Gradually more and more foods are appealing - in fact nausea better when I eat now! Salads, fruit and veg are much more appealing now and I'm eating plenty of everything! This is my 4th baby and first time suffering from HG! You sound like you've experienced it before??!!

johnnyd1 · 15/04/2011 16:55

Afternoon all! Johnny here... hope you're okay (well, you know what I mean!) x My Luce is having that funny taste in her mouth again. she can't explain it but she says it's horrible. she is now at 24 weeks and 5 days and bump is kicking like a bugger. Our nursery is starting to come on really well with 'hungry caterpillar' stickers on the wall!
just wanted to know who else has experienced the weird mouth sensation through this (on top of everything else I know you all go through) and if it's normal? Take it easy gals

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 15/04/2011 17:03

Johnny - does it taste like she is sucking on a teaspoon? They say a metallic taste in your mouth is common although I tend to just have the taste of vomit/bile Grin

Lottie - Well in my first pregnancy I was sick all day everyday but was never hospitalised and just kind of put up with it. My sickness would go at night so I would gorge on food and drink in the night instead of in the daytime. I adopted a complete night shift. But I also didn't have a toddler to look after and I still lived with my mum so didn't have to cook or clean or run a house so managed to rest all the time so I think it was HG, but easier than this time. This is my fourth pregnancy (2 mcs) and never suffered with any nausea with the babies I have miscarried so having HG is making me more positive.

And you are right, at this stage now, eating and drinking does help stave off my nausea. If I feel sick I'll try and grab a banana or a bag of crisps. Loving hot chocolate and OJ at the minute too so at least I'm getting some non fizzy fluids. :)

lottieb22 · 15/04/2011 17:16

Hi Johnny I'm 28 weeks pregnant and I have the horrible sensation in my mouth as well. I assumed it was that normal metallicy taste I'd read about. It was worse in the first 4 months and used to make my nausea and vomitting worse. It's still there now but it goes a bit when I eat certain foods or I just have a packet of mints with me most of the time! My hubby makes a mean chicken curry which helps to get rid of it!!

coconuts sick all day throughout a pregnancy sounds horrific. I can't imagine it. I look back to how I was those first 16 weeks and can't believe how ill I was - to be like that an entire pregnancy must be awful. The nausea I have now I feel like I'm getting used to! My hubby and my boss are just glad to have me functional again that any slight unwellness I feel, I'm able to put my feet up, have a rest and someone normally makes me a drink! I know I've been incredibly lucky to have good boss, hubby, GP and consultant!

johnnyd1 · 15/04/2011 19:08

Hi Coconuts and Lottie x Luce says she prefers the strong tastes (i.e. the mints and curries too) as the tastes last longer in the mouth but once those minty or curry foods go its back to that vile taste again! apparently it tastes like shite! phlegmy, biley, gross, pukeu disgustingness (nice!)

theonlyhb2 · 15/04/2011 19:20

well, i had a midwife appointment today and she told me that I havent had HG as I havent been in hospital. she said about ketones etc and I told her that neither Dr I had seen had checked my urine and she was quite shocked, also said I hadn't worked, been on anti-sickness tablets and only just getting better after a bit of a relapse. She didnt say too much more after that, but thought that maybe the recent sickness was to do with some extra progestron(?) and that causes the heartburn and slows the digestive system. I havent been as bad as before so this is likely I guess.

isnt it interesting the different views between Dr number 1 (the cock that shouted at me and said was just morning sickness) Dr number 2 (who signed me off with HG) the last midwife I saw (who made no comment, just glad I was making improvement) and this midwife.

was throwing up 4am the rest of my dinner from 8pm that hadnt digested. baby heartbeat strong and loud and lots of movement so thats good. hoping my back continues to feel better and I get some extra sleep this weekend (and less back pain = better sleep) and the puking stops. it hurts too much. the last time I had a "normal" day was Sunday 12th December. Its getting a bit much now

marylou242 · 15/04/2011 20:45

Back on the cyclizine which is still stopping anything coming back up apart from the early morning bile run, but isn't stopping empty retching and nausea. I'm taking B6 with the cyclizine but it was definitely the Avomine that gave me nightmares, I'm certain. Probably going back to the Dr next week to try to get something more expensive better.

I also have horrible taste in mouth, cold feet etc. Am feeling very sorry for myself actually and my problem with smells is getting unbearable, DH is banned from spraying any deodorants etc inside the house and has to go into the garden. His can of beer has to be covered with a coaster at all times and if he's had beer, he has to sleep facing the other way to me.

Will be joining you after this pregnancy grumblin and getting myself sterilised. There's no way I'm doing this again. I think actually there may have to be a sex ban until the op is complete. I am taking no risks. Still working on getting DH to have the op instead of me, the latest tactic is telling him he'll have a couple of nights on his own with the DCs whilst I'm in hospital. This has made him think twice I think.

theonly I don't agree with your mw. You can have HG without being in hospital. It just depends on how helpful your doctor is as to whether you get sent to hospital or not. I had ketones in my last pregnancy but they still didn't send me in to be rehydrated and I was in a right state.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 15/04/2011 20:53

Theonly I also think you can have HG without being hospitalised. As I explained earlier I suffered terribly when prg with DD but was never hospitalised. I managed because life was easier then. Sometimes you just have to get on with it. I expect I would have had ketones ++ but was never tested early on until routine tests after 16weeks, by then I much improved.

Marylou, my feet are always cold, always have an awful taste in my mouth. Aerosol deodorant is a no go.

I am seriously considering sterilisation too. DH isn't keen on the snip. I am only 23 though and worry that I might change my mind in years to come. But then I remember HG and think actually no more babies... ever. But what if? I have PCOS so can only manage certain types of pill. the jab, implant would be not an option.

God it's a minefield.

nitnatnaboo · 16/04/2011 11:52

hi all, no broadband at moment so using mobile.
Threw my tea up last night, wasnt expecting it so ignored the retching and ended up sat at the table with a handful of vomit, with a surprised look on face! Feeling really tired and nauseous again, have got anti biotics for a uti, prescription cream for piles and am now leaking milk!

fluffywhitekittens · 16/04/2011 13:05

Hello everyone.
Have tried to read and take notes this time, although am being moaned at to go and look after dd and ds.
Lucinda I did indeed have 4 ++++ ketones, do I win a prize? Maybe a ginger biscuit?
Coconuts I didn't have a balanced diet at all and couldn't take folic acid or vitamins, my Mum did buy me some pregnancy vitamin syrup but tbh it was vile so I didn't bother. DS was and is massive and is thriving so it hasn't done him any harm.
Lottie what a whopper!! I had to have a late sizing scan because he was measuring big, these hg babies obviously take all the good stuff out of us.
Johnny agree with the others about mints, try hard boiled sweets as they last a bit longer or the citrus opalfruits/starburst are good for that skanky taste in your mouth.
TheOnly your midwife is a cow and both her and that evil Dr of Bike's need a good slap.
NitNat isn't pregnancy glamorous Blush I was absolutely mortified to get piles with ds as I hadn't suffered with them with dd or ever, made my Mum buy cream for me but then had to go to GP as over the counter stuff did nothing.
Right off to deal with my 2 monkeys, we have had a nice week with dd doing really well at a swimming crash course and ds spending some quality time with grandparents.

La73 · 16/04/2011 14:11

Sorry to hear continuing tales of woe and crappy reapperance for Nitnat and Only. Grumblin cheering you on to finsh line. Any news from Grumblin? One award of big fat chocolate cake to Kittens :)
Just quick one Elliotsmummy know little bit about platelets as Mum has issue with bleeding related to this. Biggest issue is increased bleeding but rarely a problem from what I understand but they will want to keep eye on it as labour nears I'm sure.
On that note Mum and I have recently had genetic testing at Northwick Hospital (Lucinda thought of you as drove through Ealing and spotted lidded bins!) - it seems likely both have rare disorder EDS which means I may have to consider C-Section if Obs cautious whilst waiting DNA results - great!
Like Lottie, at 28 weeks finally feeling less nauseous but still knackered and when really tired will throw up (know how u feel nitnat last time was at my desk into my hand on Thurs after coughing fit, delightful for me and work colleaugues!) Now resigned to feeling like this for duration but still so glad to be 100 x times better than was during those bleak 5-19 weeks and eating pretty normally (drinks still eugh) so there is some hope :)
Now have fingers crossed that I don't throw up at GTT test Thurs but fasting and sugary drink first thing does not bode well!
Wishing you all a good, non too pukey weekend x

nitnatnaboo · 16/04/2011 14:32

ooh ooh can i claim a ketone prize too? I was 4+ before xmas!

La73 · 16/04/2011 15:07

In this close run competition, runner up prize of truffles to be delivered approx mid July x
