As the old thread is nearly full here it is time a brand new thread is born. All we need now is a new vomit face emoticon MN towers!

We are a bunch of past, present and future Confused HG sufferers (along with worried spouses, family and friends) who use this thread to support, listen and discuss the dreaded pregnancy illness that is HG (hyperemesis gravidarum).

There are no limits on how much moaning posters can do nor can anyone's symptoms or experiences be tmi.

The old thread has been a great support to many of us and we hope this new thread carries on the great work started by old thread founder and HG guru LucindaE. She still maintains, supports and clucks Grin around the thread daily even though her own experience of HG is thankfully over.

So with no further incoherent rambling from me on with the new thread eh?

thank you for the lovely young man Nitnat you have very good taste in men!

Coconuts didnt think to look in the vom Hmm (only MN gives you useful tips like this!) but I vommed about 2 mins after eating meds + banana - which normally is OK. So I took some more meds with water and then vommed that too. I think I'd better wait a bit before putting anything else down there, but will try some coconut water next.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 01/04/2011 15:30

Glad my name is giving you inspiration Grin If you are feeling extremely sick when you need to take a tablet I would recommend just laying on the bed for five or ten minutes, really try to relax, take the pill and stay there for a bit. Put DS on the bed with you with some books or puzzles. He will soon understand that mummy is feeling a bit poorly so needs a little rest but you can still play puzzles/toy of choice.

My DD is being fab. When I vommed the yogurt this morn, she came to the bathroom and held my hand bless her. "mummy sick, better soon" she said Grin

Nitnat - can I have one of those men, just for something to look at, he doesn't need to do anything! Wink Grin

LucindaE · 01/04/2011 17:16

Thanks for kind words everybody! Of course, I see you all as individuals...Though I have some silly visual pictures, I always imagine BikeRunSki on a pair of skis (even in bed?!) and Fluffy accompanied by a basket of white kittens.Cocoaunuts and Nitnat lol, but you left out the best bit. Currently Pushing baby out! (Aagh, Cocoanuts at the thought of a ten pounder... and Baby Here!
Hyperemesis can be like a nasty board game. Kept down a glass of water, move forward six spaces. For me that might then have had Virtuouso Public Puking Performance in bin leaving damp stain at back of dress Blush move back four...Annoying peson recommends ginger, take time out to fume, miss one go...
Grumblin I had a terrible experience with a pasta bake when suffering, the wardrobe got it too as I ran past, I couldn't look one in the face for years.
It seems to sit heavy on the stomach, horrible...You are so stoic, it's amazing. It's not fair you've had to suffer throughout. Two school sweaters, he's as bad as Peter Rabbit!
TheOnly Silly, you have earned your spurs, don't go even if you are eating like a horse.
MummyAbroad Sorry you are suffering badly. Shall I send a virtual geni? Not so easy on the eye (they always seem to be drawn looking like Sumo wrestlers) but useful
Caramel Countdown...Visualise that waterbath...
ElliotsMum I do hope better days are looming...
MaryLou Did you find a drink that suited? Vimto? Someone swore by that, or weak lime juice. Potato cakes too disgusting and greasy?
Cake Please take care with currents in those Hot cross Buns, (though how can you!) poor Luce had a terrible experience getting a current stuck in her nose. Boosephena Really happy about scan, the first landmark.
Cocoanuts That is sweet, and she probaby learnt to sympathise from you.
Everyone Spreadsheet has neglected Look after yourselves.

[blush} I did it again after all your gracious words! I am still convinced Cake is the one, it must be her name. No! Sorry. Sad Cake how are you feeling on Cyclazine? Diage I agree with others that it's better just to let it come if its your daily worst spot...Sad

Caramel LOL at your visualisation of the newly vom-free Theonly as the Obi Wan Kenobi of HG. Does that mean Lucinda = Yoda? I bags Han Solo when I am officially cured (which I have decreed will be at midday tomorrow at the 7-day vom-free mark).

By the way, I am frankly ALARMED Shock at the amount my bump has grown in the last week. It has grown about a foot! Cannot see how it can possibly grow any more in the next three months. Did anyone else have this a few weeks after they started eating properly? Still have no bum though, so pants still falling down. Blush

nitnatnaboo · 02/04/2011 13:42

I am cured! [happy] [happy] [happy] [happy] [happy]

7 days food-vomit free (not counting dry heaving and retching)

nitnatnaboo · 02/04/2011 13:42

I meant Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile

La73 · 02/04/2011 20:17

Quick hello. Depressingly busy boards as means lots of you suffering :( but also great amount of positive banter :( to keep us all sane!

Nitnat woo hoo! Fab news, hopefully retching will stop soon too. Yes same thing with me re big bump - practically overnight so friends and work colleagues literally did double take couple weeks ago. Was huge last time so much so people assumed carrying twins+ but thought would be diff this time round (still not pre conception weight) but oh no sporting huge bowling ball. Now 25 weeks but had a few strangers this week saying 'not long now then?' erm yeah like 3 more months!!

Doing ok just sick when get too knackered! Oh and with motion sickness so Peak District hol this week did mean a few episodes of head in carrier bag. Other than that lovely time had by all :) Still taking cyclizine at night as if skip for couple days end up vomitting.

Grumblin sorry pasta not working out, I could eat spaghetti plain and that would usually stay down but not sauce. How are you with pizza?
Caramel bagels currently working out ok for me oh and scotch pancakes like others mentioned.

Hello and positive vibes to all of you not mentioned x

La73 · 02/04/2011 20:24

Positive banter :)

Nitnat spend my life wishing for no bum, even after losing 18lbs was still sporting butt to challenge Beyonce

littlewizz · 02/04/2011 20:32

I ladies, hows the puking! Started bleeding again today bright red and some cramping Sad hardly felt any nausea today though was sick yesterday. So not sure -out of hours GP said nothing they can do just wait and see but to contact them again if things get worse. will let you all know just hope not as its been a year to get this point and 6 weeks of puking! Hope everyone else is having a puke free day and enjoying crumpets and crisps!
xx

La73 · 02/04/2011 21:11

Oh Littlewizz so so sorry you must be so anxious - have fingers and toes crossed for you and hoping sickness a positive sign; please let us know how you are tomorrow. Big but gentle hug x

Diege · 02/04/2011 22:17

Littlewizz I had two days of bleeding (moderate, more than spotting) at the start of last week, and I also had two days leading up to the bleeding where I felt I'd 'turned a corner' sickness wise (def downturn in nausea). After a scan all was well, and sickness now worse than ever. I know we all moan about HG, but the only good thing about it for me is that is it associated with good pregnancy outcomes. I never got a day of sickness with my mcs. Have everything crossed for you, I know how you must be feeling xxx

Imran5000 · 02/04/2011 23:33

Hello!

I was kindly given a link to this thread by someone on my 'morning sickness bands' thread and wanted to ask a quick question.

Quick background - cousin with severe sickness (has been hospitalised previously) is staying round ours and is being sick multiple times a day.

She's downstairs and after another harsh bout of being sick she's got the shakes - does this shivering indicate anything? Is that normal or is that an indication of something underlying which is more serious.

Underachieving · 03/04/2011 04:48

No Imran, it's normal to shake when you've been really, really sick. The poor girl. It must be horribly disturbing for you to watch her suffer but the main risks to be aware of would be dehydration or weight loss rather than anything more obscure. She should see her GP to see if he/she will prescribe her some anti-sickness stuff anyway, so she should try to have a frank chat about how bad her sickness is then. If the shakes worry you/her remember to mention them too.

La73 · 03/04/2011 09:19

Imran from personal experience I would also end up shaking and shivering post vomitting so part if the awful experience that is HG/NVP. Is cousin on anti-sick meds? Should keep an eye on dehydration as mentioned by underachiever - I used ketosticks from chemist when really suffering which would indicate when needed to see GP/ go to hospital for rehydration.

Hope she improves soon and great she has your support and concern.

fluffywhitekittens · 03/04/2011 11:02

Happy Mothers day everyone :)
Have only just managed to catch up with all the posts, pain in the bum not having a laptop.
NitNat love the idea of the army tactical map. Lucinda put me on the HG free but no sleep island, ds has decided sleep is for the weak :)
For those having carb issues try ritz crackers, shortbread, rich tea or digestives. These all were OK at various points for me.
Imran how long has your cousin been being sick multiple times? If it is more than 3 days I would suggest going to A&E.
Littlewizz fingers crossed for you, hope everything is OK.
Diege I tended to go with option b.
NitNat hurray, (whispers "be prepared for the return of early morning bile runs" Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the bathroom....)
Mummyabroad, Bikerunski and everyone else currently suffering hope it gets a bit better fairly quickly.
Sorry not mentioning others by name. Hope everyone has a good day today.

theonlyhb2 · 03/04/2011 11:17

yay nitnat!!!! great news!

I actually slept well last night, not coughing all night and not being woken up with constipation cramps (and 4 hours between wee's....amazing.....thanks baby!!)

Also (nesting perhaps?) i got my OH & his best mate to get all the rest of my stuff out of storage (are these really ALL books?! hee hee hee) and then build me bookcases, move furniture and clear out the garage. I moved in in October and only now does it feel like my home, like I actually live here. Its the books, the new rug and my sofa (my hound is VERY happy, his sofa is back, although why dont either of them now want to lie on the leather one which doesnt matter if it gets hairy & smelly?!)

So lets hope the chest infection will go in a day or two (they never taken me so long to shift!) and I dont think I even have morning sickness now........this would be amazing news. So I am keeping my fingers crossed for me and for all of you, hoping it all eases off soon (and not just because of impending due dates!)

Imran5000 · 03/04/2011 12:53

Thanks for the replies there - yeah she's on those ant-sick meds at the moment. In terms of being sick, last night it was about four times and this morning up until now she's been sick another four times. I've been trying to give her sports drinks like Lucozade sport to keep her rehydrated and put back a bit of energy in the system but that's been coming up.

Her husband is about to come round with some ginger products, ginger tea, biscuits and possibly ginger beer so hopefully this might help.

I have to say having never experienced anything like this before I have a new found respect for mums - the suffering that they can go through is quite frankly pretty terrible and to think that there's women around the world who go through this kind of thing alone doesn't bear thinking about.

CakeForBreakfast · 03/04/2011 16:43

Hello ladies (and Imran, nice to meet you, I m feeling very very sorry for your cousin)

I have tried the cyclizine - although the name on the box is called Sominex and its a sleeping aid! Anyway, it does quell the sickness but hoo-boy, I am a spaced out, non functioning zombie on them! I'm prescribed 3 per day but can only seriously manage 1.

I'm hoping for a wee bit of advice about bleeding. I'm not particularly worried, as with my first I bled hugely for 7 weeks, nothing with second pg, but now after a non worrying brown blood post toilet wipe at 6 weeks I have had another teeny amount of blood stained discharge, brown and a also pinky red(8weeks). Any ideas? I am seeing the midwife for my booking in appt tomorrow I'm sure she will tell me its fine, they say it's normal to everything don't they?

Lucinda don't worry about mixing me up, I just love how you look after us!

littlewizz · 03/04/2011 19:00

So ladies... bleeding has stopped today had some cramping this afternoon. Feeling a bit relieved though not feeling sick but been on cyclizine for 2 weeks now so maybe as I'm managing to eat and drink its keeping the sickness at bay. Had no bleeding whatso ever with DS1. Was period like for a few hours and then subsided very quickly. Going to see Gp tomorrow to see if i can get scan. Do feel a bit like a zombie on the cyclizine, functioning day to day is hard and I fear DS1 thinks I've turned into the sofa! So will just have to wait and see. I had had a blood test on friday just to keep an eye on me and nurse was worried about hydration levels as couldnt get blood very easily so have made a better effort to drink. So hopefully get those results. I had forgotten what an emotional rollercoaster being pregnant was!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes and diege maybe I'm in for a hell of a week then!!

imran your friend sounds like she's having a tough time esp as shes already taking meds. Only advice is keep eye on hydration levels, even a teaspoon of water every 15 mins is better than nothing, the more dehydrated she becomes the more concentrated the hormones the worse the sickness, maybe she needs hospital to at least get the sickness under control. Most of us can even stand the thought of ginger, I know I cant coke and salt and vinegar crisps is about all I can bear when HG at its worst. Last time round it was hot ribena and fish fingers! Dont get fobbed off by the doctors things can be done to help and shouldnt suffer in silence.

Imran5000 · 03/04/2011 20:54

Hello again and thanks for all the great advice so far! The ginger tea seems to be doing the trick, however is it 100% safe as according to the net it can cause problems with blood supply to the baby if taken too much?

theonlyhb2 · 03/04/2011 21:52

i swear by jelly for breakfast....if it stayed down I would neck an anti-sickness with a tiny bit of water and lie still til I was sure that was staying down. Then I could maybe stomach a bit of toast.

i thought ginger helped to start with, now I have thrown all ginger products out the house and banned anyone from ever suggesting them again :D

nitnatnaboo · 04/04/2011 09:51

Imran - you are doing a great job! It is very worrying for friends and family when HG strikes, especially the first time.

What are the meds called that she is on? If they aren't working, and vomiting 8+ times in less than 24 hours is a lot, then she may need to go back into hospital for more rehydration and to try a different medication. Some people on here have been hospitalised several times, especially in the early weeks.

If you can, go to the chemist and get some Ketosticks. These monitor the Ketones in her urine which is a substance produced when you are dehydrated and your body is burning fat for energy due to lack of food. If the Ketone count gets to 3+ or 4+ then most hospitals have a policy of admitting you.

nitnatnaboo · 04/04/2011 10:01

Cake and LittleWhizz no experience of bleeding sorry but fingers crossed all OK for you both.
Diege sorry it's returned with a vengeance. I bet in a strange way you wre glad (for the first 3 vomits, anyway)
LA oh good! Not just me with the enormo-bump! How is work/commuting going? Glad Peak District was fun, despite "TravelHG".
Grumblin* how are you managing at work at the moment? Hope OK. I made chocolate brownies at the weekend - first baking since HG started - they are yum!
Theonly hope the chest infection goes that same way as the vom. Glad you are over the worst and in the "recovery" phase like me!
Fluffy Hope you get some sleep soon! oh no! - hope the bile runs don't come back at 8 months. That would be par for the course as this has been totally different to the last pg.

I am definitely less tired after activity than I was even a week ago. Thought I'd never have energy ever again but I am getting strength back. Smile There is hope after HG!

nitnatnaboo · 04/04/2011 10:05

Good HG news - just heard on radio - government thinking of banning fast food adverts on TV!
