Has anyone had a growth scan this late and been told the expected weight of baby?

were they correct or did they get it very wrong?
how big did they say your baby would be and how big was your baby when born?

TIA

i had growth scan at just before 36 wks. baby was estimated at 5 1/2 pounds then, when she arrived 10 days later she was 6lb 13, so it was pretty accurate, maybe 1/2 pound out

WigWamBam · 20/10/2005 10:53

At 36 weeks they told me that dd was going to be well over 10lb.

She was 8lb 8oz, born at 37 weeks.

maddiemosthorrid · 20/10/2005 11:27

Had scan at 39 weeks, baby needed to be induced due to lack of fluid.
Weight was said to be 8lb, baby born later that day weighing 9lb10oz.

I also had a late growth scan in my first pregnancy due to a small bump where they predicted 8lb baby and were right.

I think it very much depends on how experienced the scan operator is.

I had a scan at about 36w because they were concerned that my fibroid might obstruct labour (it wasn't a problem). IIRC, the operator said that she wasn't even going to estimate the baby's due weight as it was so inaccurate at this late stage.

carly82 · 20/10/2005 11:49

i had constant growth scans on both my children due to choleastasis first at 36wks and babe was 7lb 1oz he was born two weeks later and weighed 8lb and my second was est at 7lb 1oz at thirty six weeks and was born a week later at 7lb 9oz

CountessDracula · 20/10/2005 11:50

I had one at 37 and one at 39. They predicted the weight exactly at both IIRC

mouseman · 20/10/2005 12:03

I had a scan at 38 weeks where they guessed dd's weight to be 10lbs - she was born a couple of days later weighing 10lb 13oz. I am booked in for another early scan in November as I am 34 weeks pg now and they think its another biggie!!
I was told recently that about 80% of these scans are accurate to 8oz either way.

Dinker · 20/10/2005 12:22

I had a late scan for going over 40 weeks estimated weight 8lb something. DS born 3 days later 7lb 13. They said 20% either way and his weight was 20% lighter than what they said

SoupDragon · 20/10/2005 12:27

Yep. Had one with DS2 at 37 weeks, he was born 3 days later 6oz heavier than their estimate

Berries · 20/10/2005 12:34

Had growth scans at 34, 36 & 38 weeks. Each time they predicted 6.5 lbs. I knew she was bigger than that. Born 1 day late at 9lb 2oz

coppertop · 20/10/2005 12:39

I had a scan at 36 weeks which showed that ds2 would be about 8lbs. He was born at 38 weeks weighing 9lbs.

georginars · 20/10/2005 12:41

had growth scan at 36 weeks where they decided the baby was average size (about 8lbs) but she was born 4 days late (induced due to blood pressure not size) at 9lbs 14oz. So pretty wrong really. scanned me on the day I was induced as well to see she was the right way round and still mention she might be big, until she was actually out....

Wills · 20/10/2005 16:18

I had about 7 different people tell me 7 different thinks and in the end had a growth scan. She was a little small was the conclusion. dd2 was born a week later at 6lb 1oz which considering dd1 was born a week LATE at 6lb 7oz seens fairly normal.

Kidstrack2 · 20/10/2005 16:39

Had growth scans with both my ds and dd, my ds was 9lb and an emerg c/s, I wasn't allowed to labour with second baby if it was going to be over 8lb, at 37week scan I was told the baby was 6lb 12oz and that I was allowed to labour as they said the baby would be at birth 7lb 8oz but if I was late it would be a few ounces heavier, dd was 4days late and weighed 7lb 10oz, so for me it was very accurate indeed and it also let me have the birth I wanted!

Kidstrack2 · 20/10/2005 16:46

WigWamBam your dd was a fantastic weight for 3weeks early, she could of quite easily have been 10lb when born at the EDD! Wow

Kelly1978 · 20/10/2005 16:57

I wouldn't trust those scans at all. They told me my dts were well over 7lb at 36 weeks. They both were estimated at over a pound bigger than they actually were when they were born 2 weeks later. Another scan at 38+5 showed a dt as ceph, when to me he felt breech, and he was born breech.

Miaou · 20/10/2005 17:17

I had a growth scan at around 37 weeks and the radiographer would not estimate the baby's weight as she said it was so easy to be way out!

I had one a bit earlier, prob 34 ish weeks. they had said dd2 was on the small side. she was 8lb 9.5oz. ahem.

Meid · 20/10/2005 17:23

I had a scan to check DD's position at 38 weeks. They said she was about 8lb then. She was born 3 weeks later at 6lb 13oz so they were way off.

hoxtonchick · 20/10/2005 17:33

it depends whether you have a one off scan, or serial ones. i had scans every month from about 20 weeks as i have diabetes & my babies needed to have their growth monitored. i ended up with very accurate measurements - dd was estimated at 2.82 kg & was 3.01 kg when she was born the following week. can't remember with ds as it was almost 4 years ago... but they can be pretty unreliable if it's a one off.

skinnycow · 20/10/2005 17:36

i had one prior to dd and they said she would be over 81/2 lbs - she was 8 91/2

and with ds they said he would be about 9lbs - he was 8lb12

WitchHazellnut · 20/10/2005 18:49

Had growth scan at 37, estimate about 2 kg.... induced and had her 4 days later and baby weighed 2.072 kg.

Kidstrack2 · 20/10/2005 20:22

Yeah I have to say a growth scan is totally different to a routine scan, some sonographers will do a rough estimate where these will prob be way out, but I had a top doctor who done measurements for about 20mins.

QueenVictoria · 20/10/2005 20:38

Yep - had growth scans with both and they were spot on to the ounce!
