Hello :)

I am 9 weeks pregnant and last week I had a small bit of brown, snot-like discharge when I wiped. I wasn't overly worried as it was brown and just this once.

But last night after wiping I had the same thing but it was a little more pinky/brown. Again, just when I wiped. Nothing afterwards or during the night.

This morning I have a little yellow/brown discharge which I think smells a little unsavoury.

I had some swabs done last week and there was no sign of infection. I have previously had two miscarriages so I fully expect this to fail now. But my questions are: I am A- blood group, do I need an anti-d after this spotting or does it not class as spotting enough to warrant an anti-d? And should I be worried?

I had my booking in appointment with my MW yesterday and I have my first scan and booking at hospital on Thursday. Should I wait to mention it then?

Thanks for reading and for any replies :)

no idea but bumping for you

best of luck :)

I had brown stuff like that (as well as lots of bleeding) in the first four months. I think it's quite common.

I am sure you will worry, though, if you leave it until Thu. Can you call your midwife and ask what she thinks? She may be able to offer reassurance.

thell · 01/03/2011 12:35

Hello - and congratulations!

Anti-D is given if you are Rhesus negative, in case your baby is Rhesus positive and you develop antibodies. It's not given routinely until 28 weeks anyway - there's more info here

I think you can wait until Thurs to mention the discharge to your midwife, unless you get any more bleeding in the meantime. It's possibly just implantation bleeding working its way out, but they may want to check you out. It's good that there's no sign of infection though :)

Hope everything's ok x

Coconuts I've been having this on and off (more on than off) since I was 9 weeks exactly (now 12+3). Like you I panicked at the thought of MC but have had three scans now and bean seems fine. No cause for the brown has been identified and I've been told some women just get this. I'm hoping it will go but have been warned that some women get it off and on the whole pg with no ill effects to the baby. FX all is fine for you too.

I have no experience of the rhesus neg issue but if you do need it then sooner is likely to be better than later I would have thought, so I would call your MW just to check. No harm in being sure. (Though I'm totally prepared for someone who knows more about this than me to correct me!)

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 01/03/2011 12:42

Thanks for the bump and the replies. My MW said to me yesterday that I will need anti-d after any spotting but I'm not sure if this classes as spotting. She explained to me that it is given at 28 weeks now. When I had DD I had about three or four anti-d's I think so protocol has changed somewhat since then.

I think, mentally, I could deal with the brown stuff, but when it turned pink last night that was it. Panic stations, went to bed and didn't even speak to DH. Just wept into my pillow. Poor bloke. I don't think I could cope with losing another baby. I have been having awful dreams about miscarriage, some very vivid and graphic. :(

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about yet I'm just more desperate than words for this to come good.

And I'm confused as to why it smells whiffy if I have no infection.

I am embarrassed to call her because I know I'll end up crying down the phone, and if she says go to hospital I have no way of getting there and no childcare for DD. I'm not even dressed yet as I'm too ill with my hyperemesis.

God, bloody hormones.

Xpost wombat, MW said I would need the anti-d within 72 hours of the spotting, after that it doesn't matter Hmm If it doesn't matter what's the point in the first place IYSWIM?

Cry away, I did just reading your post. Bloody hormones as you say.

Your midwife will be used to crying mothers who just need reassurance. If you are at all worried (which you obvs are), then phone your midwife. It is her job to reassure you and put your mind at rest as well as just the medical side of pregnancy.

All the best.

Wombat33 · 01/03/2011 12:50

I suspect she meant that the 72 hours is when the anti-D is most effective to prevent the antibodies being created by the mother's immune system, but she'd be the best person to clarify this. Big hugs. It must feel like an uphill battle with the HG as well. I'm sure she'll be fine if you sob down the phone at her - they must be very used to it!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 01/03/2011 12:51

I just called. And cried Blush

She said they don't need to an anti-d before 12 weeks. If spotting occurs after 12 weeks they will do one then, and the routine one at 28 weeks.

She told me what to look out for and who to call if it turns into bad signs. She said she could refer me to EPAU but as I am going Thursday anyway I can leave it till then.

So I'm a little reassured, but nervous to go to the loo. And petrified for Thursday's scan.

I think it's just getting on top of me now. Feeling so sh*! and I don't want it to be for nothing. :(

coconuts well done for calling and I wish you heaps of luck for Thursday xxx

shmoz · 01/03/2011 17:22

Fingers crossed for you Coconuts x

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 01/03/2011 17:23

Thanks. It has slowed down to just a yellowy colour now so perhaps I have developed an infection since my swabs were taken [hopeful]

I am a little crampy on and off but that's normal at this stage anyway isn't it?!

OP posts:
Wombat33 · 01/03/2011 17:40

Yep that's very normal. My MW said the yellowy goo can be normal too.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 01/03/2011 17:49

Really? Oh you give me hope Wombat. [grip]

OP posts:
ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 01/03/2011 17:50

Or Grin even. I need to get a grip!

OP posts:
Wombat33 · 01/03/2011 17:51

Thanks - I'm in need of both Grin s and a grip here so both gratefully received Wink

I had yellowy goo off and on all the way through my pregnancy, swabs came back normal, I think its just one of those things Smile

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 03/03/2011 13:59

Back from scan, all good, baby measuring 9+3, 1 day ahead :)

MW said the goo stuff can sometimes be from the cervix, something like the show at the end or pregnancy, but little bits come away here and there.

Much relieved Grin

Also, if you are having sex, it could be from that?
Selina

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 03/03/2011 16:50

Funny you should mention that, the two times I have had the spotting it has been the day after the only two times I dared to have sex. I'll now put a ban in place.

However, I thought sex during pregnancy was totally safe?

Hurrah! Fab news coconuts that must be such a relief!

suze2000 · 03/03/2011 17:15

Hi! iv not even met you and your my hero! i have been panicking like a mad women! i too, have had two mc before and hearing you have got to 12 weeks and everything ok! god youv just made my week! thankyou so much! im so so happy for you! best of luck!!!xx

suze2000 · 03/03/2011 17:30

oh, i didnt mension in there that im 5+weeks now! trying not to get my hopes up to much, but really hard not to after hearing your success!! xx

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 03/03/2011 18:03

suze - I'm 9 weeks not 12! But yes I have had 2 mcs, then my DD was born and now I'm pregnant for the fourth time and going crazy with anxiety! I also have a bi-cornuate uterus and PCOS. Fingers crossed this one works out :)

Were you given a reason for your two mcs? There is a recurrent mc board over on the mc section. There are many ladies on there that have had many many more mcs than me, including placental abruptions and comas and have still gone on to have a successful pregnancy - with the help of a few drugs and potions - and have a new baby to prove that good things can happen. They gave me the hope I needed and gave me a place to vent while I have been going crazy these last few weeks :)
