Hi

Just getting into the shopping part of having a baby (this will be my first) - am just looking and picking out items as Im not sure if 19 weeks is a little too early to get started?

I dont know what I am having so am going neutral but want a Disney theme but without being restricted to Winnie the Pooh! I like pooh bear but want other disney characters.

Will only get the basic essentials until baby is born and we know what we are having.

But would love to know what theme you are all going for? Also anyone else manged a Disney them without Winnie?

Am starting to consider doing some small canvas paintings mself rather than have tigger and piglet staring at me.

i think it's sweet myself, when i had ds(17) we had little alphabet border from mothercare and matching bed stuff etc, was really lovely. i quite like looking at nice stuff - maybe others on this thread don't Grin

JimmyChoo17 · 23/02/2011 20:14

Agreed adair I have found some right bargains online it's all stuff I need to get and if I was all about shopping I wouldn't be making some items...means I don't really lose out much once baby is older with it's own identity too. Didn't think would shop so early but it allows me to spread the cost too.

Ooo melly I like your wicked clown ways!!

Like prinpo a friend has just had the jungle book painted onto her walls, sadly my artistic skills aren't as good so I'll stick with the smaller artwork!

Definitely paint stuff yourself. But don't do too much cos you'll feel terrible when you say 'oh, look I knitted that dolls blanket for you darling PFB when i was pregnant because I love you so much' and then look at dc2 (and 3) and go 'ummmm...'

d0gFace · 23/02/2011 20:19

A jungle theme is a nice idea, could add in jungle book characters if you wanted to make it more disney-esk.

Bubandbump · 23/02/2011 20:33

Well I am firmly on the theme side- it's so much fun!

We cleared out the old study (ie dumped it in the spare room till I can sort it out) and have gone with a jungle theme which seems to have become dominated by giraffes which goes nicely with the newly yellow walls.

There are some brilliant wall decals (stickers to me) which are reusable and removable without damaging paper or paint underneath. We have a big tree one in one corner of the room and I am planning on making some green 'vines' to have a monkey hanging off across the ceiling.

It's clearly for me and not the baby (I am only 29 weeks) but I am enjoying myself!!

I have to say that I like the spotty dalmation idea though..

theming and marketing for nurseries isn't new my cousins had hector's house wallpaper in the 70s Grin

someone on here once linked some lovely animal wallpaper from the 70s i'll try to find

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 23/02/2011 20:40

i painted my my sons room lemon (gender nuetral) with lemon gingham curtains then had rainbow bedset from IKEA very bright and colourful and painted canvases myself of mickey mouse gang. 1 with rainbow backround, 2 with lemon gingham backround looks great and no1 else has anything like it.

i can put picks of the canvases on my profile if u want they were really easy to do if a bit time consuming.

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 23/02/2011 20:41

ps im not a good drawer i traced from colouring sheets

Adair · 23/02/2011 20:41

Sounds lovely, EdwardorEric (big rainbow fan here too).

theonlyhb2 · 23/02/2011 20:42

i had a brainwave in a shop the other day and just shouted PENGUINS at my other half. As I do love penguins and the other day we noticed they are slowly taking over the house.....

Mind you, the baby's room is currently the hounds bedroom, I don't think we will be able to get them to move out!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/02/2011 20:46

I never had a nursery theme when DS was newborn but I am currently renovating our house and both DH and I are very excited about his room.

Here are some websites:

Creative bunkbeds

Calvin & Hobbes mural

wall stickers

Christopher Robin sold the rights to Disney lock, stock and barrel which is why can be so cavalier creative with the brand. He had very mixed feelings about his father and the Pooh stories. That's why they haven't had the close legacy protection that say, the Peter Rabbit books have. Sad but I hope the very mass market approach means more children will discover the originals and the lovely EH Shephard drawings.

I found that sitting in the finished baby's room was really relaxing at the end of my pregnancy - it really made me feel ready although tbh it was the only newly decorated house in the house and I would also sit there pretending that the whole house looked that nice! We did the whole replastering, new carpet, moving radiators etc as the room had been a complete state. We now have a magnolia room with white woodwork and cream carpet. Blind is bright red and curtains (made by grandma) white with a red and blue pattern. Bedding is neutral (spare single bed still in there), bedding in cot is just a sheet as dd sleeps in a grobag (none of which match the room!). Furniture is all wooden with bookcase made by grandad and a chest of drawers that once belonged to dh's grandma. It's so lovely and dd's been in there since she was 8 months old. The only additions have been a few posters (pictures of flowers from a free calendar) to give her something to look at from the changing mat. Am now thinking of making a patchwork quilt of her first babygrows to go onto her first bed Grin

PS - my original theme was the woods, with lots of green and stickers of birds and woodland animals on the walls - not sure when that changed! Grin

Adair · 23/02/2011 20:51

Nah peter rabbit big sell-out too.

Love that Calvin &Hobbes mural.

ok thats me put pics on my profile.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/02/2011 21:03

"I found that sitting in the finished baby's room was really relaxing at the end of my pregnancy"

Me too Smile - ours was a box room littered with rubbish until a few weeks beforehand and I remember at 40 weeks being so content it was a cute and beautiful room that everyone admired.

Didn't last long. Grin And is now someone else's sitting room...

Adair - don't push my buttons on the various character distortions inflicted on Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger in the name of mass-market branding! Peter Rabbit is untainted by comparison. (Sorry OP)

JimmyChoo17 · 23/02/2011 21:21

No worries I am annoyed at myself for even biting earlier!

I agree partialtoacupofmilos post is a nice way of looking at it.

We're keeping our nursery neutral (magnolia walls with beige carpet) then will customise the walls with those peel-off-able stickers - going for the hungry caterpillar first but then might go for a Nemo theme later (since DP and I are big fans of diving and marine fish geeks) - I can't wait to get it all sorted out!

happycamel · 23/02/2011 23:40

I'm half in the theme camp. I love Peter Rabbit and the idea of filling a room with English animals rather than my DH's preferred jungle theme.

I had PR stuff when I was a kid, including a couple of beautiful tapestrie done by my mum when she was in hospital with me (for 6 months). We're using those, a couple of new things (agree PR Warne stuff uses the original drawings but the cost! I also found some woodland clothing in JL here.

Going for neutral paint and carpets though and just adding the pictures and will get curtains and a mobile from Warne. I'm cross stitching a PR birth sampler too.

No, not everyone has the money to do this. But some of us do, we work hard for it and I think it's a shame for people to be competitively cheap. Would you rather I kept it in my bank account (and increased bank profits) or helped someone who works for Warne or JL not be laid off?

jenandberry · 23/02/2011 23:44

We don't know if I am expecting a girl or a boy so no theme yet. The room with a cot nursery is neutral and we will make a decision later.

However I do enjoy sitting in the room as it is quite cosy. I have made some blankets for in there.

I will look at those websites Tondelayo

coraltoes · 24/02/2011 09:01

Hello Jimmychoo17

I think a theme is a lovely idea if you can settle on one. If you're after disney but not gender specific what about the aristocats? Lady and the Tramp? The Jungle Book? Peter Pan? Toy Story?

good luck, and enjoy the shopping.

Can't remember who the grump was who raised an eyebrow about shopping for a baby, but ignore her. As for the "oh i put baby in the shed til she was 10"....why not let someone enjoy shopping for their baby?! Where is the harm in letting people enjoy preparing their home for their newcomer. It is a great way of bonding with your bump, eagerly expecting their arrival!! Enjoy every minute

I dont really have a theme in my nursery but do have a massive wall sticker, which looks fantastic. Just hope baby likes it when she arrives in the next few week! Wink

Firawla · 24/02/2011 09:32

I think your theme sounds nice, its good to make an effort with it if it makes you happy, why not. I do think its part of the excitement of new babies to get everything ready for them.
my ds1 had like a stars, moons, planets kinda thing and ds2 had boats, lighthouses etc, i just mainly do it with the wall stickers cos we are in rented place and not allowed to paint or anything
dc3 i dont know yet, waiting to find out if boy or girl and i will chose something then. ds1&2 are gonna move together into ds2's room so think i will redo their theme maybe cars, trains or something more along those lines as that's what they are most into now
