I was wondering how old you are, with your first babies? My antenatal class was made up of women mostly mid to late 30s. I'm 35 and I thought I was leaving it too late! Was nice to see that there are a lot of us out there.

OP posts:

growing3rdbump · 21/02/2011 16:55

I had my first at 23yrs, second at 26.5yrs and pregnant with 3rd at 30yrs.

LisMcA · 21/02/2011 16:57

29 and I was the one of the oldest at my AN class! Go figure!!

gael1985 · 21/02/2011 16:57

lilly13 I totally disagree with you. Having a child past 35 is a choice. You can have a career and a child... I've never understood why women feel that they must choose between the two. I'm not saying its easy but it's doable.

I would consider my self a high achiever. University educated. Recently completed a masters and had I not fallen pregnant I would have be doing a PHD later this year. Oh and did I mention, I have my own business.

Op, 25 and pregnant with my first. My mother on the other hand had my youngest brother at 43!

ng1412 · 21/02/2011 16:58

I am 41 with my first (was 40 with first but mmc last year), a work friend and I are attending the antenatal classes together soon and she is a year younger than me. Will be interesting to see the ages of the other mums to be!

PukeyMummy · 21/02/2011 18:07

gael1985 having a child past 35 is not always a choice. I was 33 when I had DD. Most of my NCT class was the same age, and a few of us had problems ttc. Given the choice, I would have had DC1 in my late twenties, but it wasn't to be.

I'm not saying this to provoke an argument, just to ask you to think a little more about the circumstances of others, might not always be what they seem. Lots of people asked me about when we would be having children when we were ttc and I did trot out the career thing as an excuse, although it wasn't true, because we wanted to keep things secret.

OP, I do also think that some ante-natal classes tend to be skewed towards the older age spectrum depending on the area/cot of the courses. There were a couple of twenty-something mums in my classes but they were "unusual".

PukeyMummy · 21/02/2011 18:10

Sorry gael1985, just realised your message was a response to someone else. In that context, I read it differently, please consider my response removed (sorry).

I'm 33, will be 34 when LO is born. Started trying at 29, fertility issues got in the way. Good luck all you first-timers :)

cowboylover · 21/02/2011 18:13

I am 26 having my first and 'old' for the area I live where mostly have there 1st at 18 to 20.

Our MW said on our booking in appointment that it was unusual to have a married couple going to see her!

I only know of one other friend who went to the NHS ante-natal classes and there are no NCT ones locally.

jasmine51 · 21/02/2011 18:17

! Having a child later in life is sometimes a choice and sometimes not. There are as many older mums who have been trying for years as those who have delayed for career reasons - you cant generalise.

MrsMooky · 21/02/2011 18:18

I'm 35 - expecting my first in early August. Most of my friends were the same age or a little older when they had their first.

annapolly · 21/02/2011 18:21

I was 24 when I had my first. 39 when I had my last.

My Ds is now 10, there ate 7 other DCS in his class with Mums older than me.

Molybdenum · 21/02/2011 18:28

31, will be 32 at the time of birth. This is young for my group of friends. Thinking of my friends who are pregnant with their first: 32, 35, 37, 42, 44. I think my youngest girlfriend was 29 when she had her first. I know that's the average age, but I never meet any of these younger mums.
My mum was 30 before she got started. Maybe this shaped my feelings about motherhood and age, but I never considered getting started before 30.

OrangeGloss · 21/02/2011 18:30

33 expecting my first. I wanted to try sooner, but we waited for the right time that we'd have a better work/life balance

Snakeears · 21/02/2011 18:36

I'm 29 - EDD 1 month before 30th - good present! (incidentally exactly same spaces as my birth and my mum's 30th - wierd, not on purpose I have to add that would be creepy!)

pettyprudence · 21/02/2011 19:21

i'll be 29 by my EDD and i'm about average in my group of friends. In my hypnobirthing class we were all pretty much the same age. Technically i was the youngest but i think only by a matter of months!

LittleMilla · 21/02/2011 19:52

I ahve just turned 30 and baby due in 9 weeks. I think I am the youngest in our NCT class and it's sort of exaccerbated by the fact that DH and I look really young. We even got ID'd in Sainsbury's a few months ago...I was visibley PG too. HA!

I am third in my group of friends. One is married to an army chap and I get the impression from her that it's more common to start a bit earlier. And other is just bonkers and wants to have as many DCs as possible...and they seem to be uber fertile. We often joke that we need to keep her DH away from other ladies in case he manages to inseminate them!! Sorry, TMI. But I am starting to go slightly bananas... Confused

violetwellies · 21/02/2011 19:55

Jasmine, I beat you I'll be 46 when I give birth :D

I was not in a position to be a parent until in my late 30's and from stopping using contraceptives to getting pregnant took a biut longer than anticipated :D

JimmyChoo17 · 21/02/2011 20:03

I am 29. None of my friends who I grew up with have kids and think I am way too young?! I dont think that.

My friends with kids are 33 - 40.

Marabou · 21/02/2011 21:17

I'm 31 and this is my first baby!

CitizenOscar · 21/02/2011 21:50

I'm 32 and one of the first of my uni friends to have a baby. Haven't been to NCT yet so can't comment on age range there.

BPrincess · 21/02/2011 22:42

I'm 41 and pg with first. We hadn't planned to have kids, it was a complete shock! (very happy about it now and looking forward to our exciting new life!)

Will start ante-natal classes soon but London based, so maybe I won't be the oldest, who knows...

ButterflySally · 21/02/2011 23:08

I'm 31 and this is my first.

LadyGoneGaga · 22/02/2011 08:32

I was 29 with my first. I was the youngest in my antenatal class. We ranged from me up to 38? One of the men was significantly older though! Now pregnant with my second, DP's first. I am 32, he will be 38.

Kirst07 · 22/02/2011 10:12

I was 23 when I found out I was pregnant with twins and I am 30 now and expecting my third. My friends with children are all between five and ten years older than me.

nannyl · 22/02/2011 10:18

my 1st baby is due in my 31st birthday Smile
