Murphy's/Sod's Law and getting pregnant (light-hearted)

Just for fun, what were the Murphy's Law/Sod's law indicators or things you did that meant you were definitely going to get pregnant soon (or were already pregnant)?

Mine were:

  • we booked a very expensive non-cancellable long-haul holiday for seven months' time. Using air miles for the flights.
  • I talked to a friend about ttc and how an August baby wouldn't be great anyway for school admission dates (guess when I'm due?)
  • I went out and bought myself a whole load of new clothes, none of them suitable for pregnancy. And I got rid of my mummy-tummy-hiding clothes.
  • as Christmas was coming, I went and bought a load of my favourite alcohol in readiness, loads of my favourite white wine (was on offer), port, etc.
  • I ditched the healthy diet and started eating rubbish and forgot to take my vitamins.

Yep, found out I was pregnant (after a year of ttc) in early December!

So what are your stories?

I lost a stone in weight

Agreed to house sit my parents house while they travelled the world for 5 months

Tried to career change by going to lots of interviews

I think this always happens its got to hasnt it, even if we plan to get pregnant it never really happens when we want it to.
So Im now trying to find a house before my parents come home and before the baby arrives in may, dont think I could handle living with my parents with a little one. And Im sure it would drive my DH insane.

lolajane2009 · 15/02/2011 12:17

I joked with a family friend of hubbys that some many people get lucky and pregnant over christmas... i conceived on the 25th or 27th december.

i also decided to give up trying and doing open uni

AlpinePony · 15/02/2011 12:30

I had mentally just about given up and we moved from a 2-bed house with a garden in to a 1-bed flat. During the 48 hours of moving house I got pregnant.

justbeingmummy · 15/02/2011 12:59

I lost a over a stone in weight which was left over from DC1, agreed to move in with Mum and Dad for a year to save up some money so gave up our house, booked 2 holidays for the coming year (luckily not abroad so could still go, even tho I was rather large) and was worrying everyday about how the hell we were going to afford IVF as I had a meeting with my consultant who told us that was our only option left after ttc for over 2 and a half years, was actually pg at the appointment but didnt know :)

JBrd · 15/02/2011 13:43

I had been made redundant and was doing intense job-hunting, had spent an absolute fortune on a couple interview outfits that are now still as pristing as the day I bought them - wore one of the them once. I fell pregnant about 2 weeks after leaving my job.
Also, we were planning a big exotic holiday this year, but fortunately didn't get as far as booking.

Cyclebump · 15/02/2011 13:47

DP and I were thinking about TTC but when I got transferred to a new company an hour and a half away with only a month's notice we decided to put it off until I found work closer to home because it would be a nightmare commuting that far while pg.

Unfortunately we went on holiday in the month's notice period and drank far too much wine... Am now 33 weeks and still commuting an hour and a half each way Smile

Mine very similar to your pukeymummy!

I'd literally just booked a long haul trip for 9 months time, non refundable flights....and tickets to see take that (still holding out hope i'll be able to go when 2weeks away from due date!)

i was waiting for AF to arrive so I could have next round of diagnostic fertility tests after over a year of trying.

I'd pretty much given up trying and stopped taking my folic acid.

The wine and sloe gin i'd been brewing all year for Christmas was just about ready to drink too!

To top it all, had just spent a wad of cash on new clothes and underwear, all of which are now unwearable!

Couldn't be happier though :)))

  • My 30th in January I had booked a road trip with my best friend to go to Bruges, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Brussels. I spent the trip actually at home, in bed, with HG, whilst by BF went with another one of our friends instead.

  • I bought lots of new skinny jeans (x 2 each sort cos they kept selling out) and now I need to convince Topshop to take them back.....

  • Lets not talk about all the other clothes/shoes/ masses of new underwear/charges to credit card

  • I HAVE A GLASTONBURY TICKET!!! Do I, don't I, oh god, I can't give it up, gold dust! Yet I cant go 7 months pregnant and without my partner

  • My BF 30th this year and we were planning on going to China and Japan

  • I had planned to go to Global Gathering......luckily not bought a ticket

  • I need to get a "sensible" car as I don't think a sports car is going to be suitable soon!

lxr1 · 15/02/2011 15:53

After 2 years of TTC, I handed in my notice after getting a job offer for a company I really wanted to work for. Got my BFP 2 days before starting the new job last month!

sam26oscar · 15/02/2011 15:53

Sold everything baby orientated in a car boot sale after a 6yr gap ...bfp the following week!!!!

Shipscat · 15/02/2011 15:57

Did the booking a holiday thing here too - sailing across the Bay of Biscay- ended up with the NT scan booked when we would have been away!

SerenaJoy · 15/02/2011 16:05

Said to myself 'it doesn't matter that we're moving into a tiny rented flat until we find the right house, I won't get pregnant for ages anyway'.

Of course, I fell pregnant within a few weeks of moving into said tiny flat.

We're still there and I'm due in June!

[hyperventilates]

PukeyMummy · 15/02/2011 17:29

Nice ones ladies, making me laugh, keep 'em coming!

(Didn't want to post this on the 'Conception' topic as thought it would frustrate some folks who have been ttc for ages - been there, done that...)

MainlyMaynie · 15/02/2011 18:50

We decided it was ok to work in different countries and have 2 places. Bit of an error, but after 4 years trying we're still completely delighted :)

Portofino · 15/02/2011 19:04

I wasn't actively TTC, but started a secondment in Dublin for 6 months to a year. This involved me staying in a flat and commuting at the weekends. We went on holiday the week before I started and had a VERY lovely time Wink

The secondment involved working 12-14 hour days, lots of takeaways and then going to parties/clubs. The first 4-5 weeks were MOST good fun. I put the lack of AF and extreme tiredness down to the stress and excellent social life. I joked about it via email with my friend.

After a couple of weeks with "pre-period" pains and no AF I took a test. Gobsmacked! Well that put paid to the partying Grin. After a couple of months of falling asleep at my desk, refusing invitations, and insisting that I needed to eat "proper" food, everyone stopped talking to me! The rest of the secondment was dire and the plane trips made me feel ill - though otherwise I never had morning sickness.

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 15/02/2011 19:11

Gutted!

soppypreggyloon · 15/02/2011 19:46

Bought an expensive cream carpet for living room

Was prescribed metformin to regulate my 65 day cycles that same day I got BFP!

5inthebed · 15/02/2011 19:58

Ds2 was dxed with autism on a thursday and wa wedding anniversary on the Sunday. Dh took me out to cheer ourselves up and we decided not to have any more dc to give our two the attention they'd need. I conceived that weekend, which was amazing in itself as I had had fertility treatment to conceive both ds1 and ds2.
