If your transverse baby turned, how many weeks were you? Did you do anything to help?

I'm 28+6 today, baby determinedly transverse.
I know, I know, lots of time to turn, supposedly.

MW reckons that in 3 weeks time (31wk appt) baby will have turned (one way or the other) & someone else told me that as baby gets too big to be comfy sideways, it will turn.

So, if your transverse baby turned, how many weeks pregnant were you?
Had you done anything/tried anything to make it turn?
If so, what?

DD2 was transverse (she was breech till 33 weeks then went to transverse and never budged but she is an awkward child Wink)

DD1 was breech and after lots of rocking on all 4 etc and had failed ECV at 38 weeks so booked for planned c section with her at 39+4. So when I discovered dd2 was trasverse I opted for another elective c section (had a few other complications with that pregnancy with bleeding etc so ECV wasnt an option) had her at 38+2

roundthehouses · 29/01/2011 19:24

i was told at 33 weeks that my baby was breech although from where the sonographer indicated the head and bum (and from what i could make out as the same) it certainly seemed more transverse than a straight up-and-down breech. I went to a chiropractor who specialised in the webster technique 5 times one week, then 3 times the next week, 2 this week and I am pretty sure he has turned. two mws have seen me this week and also think he is now head down. I have 37 week scan on tuesday to double check so fingers crossed its worked!

also check out spinningbabies.com, moxibustion (?) etc - good luck!

Hi JKS Grin

M was transverse till 37wks. I had a late scan to check and she had moved.

I think 2nd pgs (and 3rd) they will mov later iyswim.

Chaotica · 29/01/2011 19:26

Hi JKS - DS was transverse. He turned at 36w (just before they admitted me forever because of it) but never really got into any sensible position and moved around enough to be 'unstable lie'. He was CS although they did try to induce him and he shifted out of position again.

As the MW said, plenty of time yet. Do you know where the placenta is? (I ask since that was a factor in DS's failure to get head down.) (He is also a stubborn child Grin)

simpson · 29/01/2011 19:26

move Blush

Portofino · 29/01/2011 19:27

Mine turned at 39 weeks - just before my planned elcs! I had polyhydramnious (too much water) and she was just bobbing about in there I think. I was the size of a house!

spidookly · 29/01/2011 19:30

40+1 (the day I went in for my elcs)

I think I did bits and pieces of yoga to try to get her to turn, but nothing worked really.

pearlgirl · 29/01/2011 19:34

ds3 was transverse and moved himself at 37weeks - I wasn't sure what was happening as had been induced with the others - when they checked he had turned head down and he stayed that way until he was born at 40+8.

lowra · 29/01/2011 19:57

I'm 31 weeks and pretty sure my baby is breech/tranverse. Feet are down to the left and head a bit higher up to the right (I think!)

Hoping she will move but going to ask the mw for some advice on Friday. A bit worried.

CrapBag · 29/01/2011 20:39

DS was transverse until 37 weeks. I did nothing to help him turn and didn't even realise he had. He was also quite a big baby at 8lbs 11oz and 10 days early.

I'm not convinced that any of these methods to help a baby turn actually works. I have been trying them (this one is breech, had a failed ECV) and I think they will turn if and when they want to. Most do anyway but there are the stubborn ones who just won't no matter what you do.

I wouldn't worry about it yet, you do have loads of time.

JustKeepSwimming · 29/01/2011 21:01

Thanks everyone, I know i have time but curious as to when most babies do actually turn. Seems to be quite late.

I'm sceptical about some methods but will give anything a try - will have to google Websters technique - at least once.

LOL at these ones being stubborn children, this one has already been getting a telling off, lol :)

AFAIK the placenta is at the top, can't remember if i was told that at 12 or 20-week scan.

Those of you whose babies turned, did you feel it? could you tell?

If this one stays transverse, and an ELCS is the only option, also wondering when to hold out for in terms of dates. I'd prefer to go into labour, then go in for a planned c-s but i understand there are risks with this. But have heard so many stories of babies turning just before a planned c-s that i don't want to pick too early a date.

I could not really tell that DD had turned and tbh was worried that she might go transverse again without me realising iyswim.

LOL at stubborn children as thats definately DD Grin

cece · 29/01/2011 21:09

Transverse discovered at 40 weeks plus 4! Had no idea till I went for a check up.

Baby turned overnight before I went into hospital for the trying to turn him manouvre. Again had no idea he had turned till they did the scan!

Oh and he was 10lbs when he was born the next day. Must have a roomy womb Shock

CrapBag · 29/01/2011 21:10

TBH its way too early to be thinking about sections because of transverse baby at this stage but I don't think they would advise waiting to go into labour first as it can be trickier with a transverse baby, plus it is not possible to give birth vaginally to a transverse baby but it is a breech one so I can't imagine they would let you go into labour first.

I didn't feel DS turn. This baby is breech and I'm pretty sure she did turn last week because she felt different after and the movements and my bump were different but I didn't feel her turn. The next night she was back to breech and I didn't feel her turn then either but could tell her head was back to its breech position.

JustKeepSwimming · 29/01/2011 21:11

Wow Cece, esp at 10lbs!!

I can really tell with this one where it is, head on my right, bum on my left.
DS2 was an undiagnosed breech so i wasn't able to tell with him, think i'm more aware this time round.

29 weeks, determinedly transverse! I think it's trying to turn but failing.... Nothing's working. I'm a bit worried because I really don't think there's room! And I worry I might have low fluid as well which might be making it difficult for baby.

How does placenta position affect things?

pearlgirl · 29/01/2011 21:18

I did feel ds3 move himself round - I was told he was going to be a good size - he was 10lb 11oz when he finally made an appearance.

TheNewStig · 29/01/2011 21:23

No idea if placenta position matters!

39+ wks and DD1 was still turning between transverse and oblique regularly, every 2-3 days. She didn't settle into head down until I went into labour at 40+3. Didn't try anything to help as she'd turn of her own accord. I'd had a late scan in wk 39 due to no one being sure of position and it was written all over my notes to check her position and do a scan in labour if they weren't sure. Came as no great surprise that she had cord around her neck a few times, thankfully midwife sorted it fast as she was delivering and no harm was done.

I know my Mum was booked for a c/s as my bro was transverse. In she went, they scanned her, he was head down the day of c/s so they cancelled, but by the next am he'd turned again so they did the c/s that day!

My SIL also had a turning babe! DN was turning breech to head down still during wk 40. I remember SIL calling me to say she'd had a late scan for position and all was good, only on the drive home from the appointment for the little one to turn "upside down" again!

cece · 29/01/2011 21:29

I should add that he had been in the perfect position for months prior to turning into a transverse position at 40 weeks!

10 lbs is nothing! My largest was over 11LBs Smile

tlise · 30/01/2011 00:26

Mine has been transverse at every scan, 6 so far, have another at 36 weeks - 29 weeks atm but got feeling she won't budge as she likes her space.

Apparantly Gravity kicks in and head gets heavier than rest of the body so the doc who didn't care this week said lol she said every baby is individual, everyone else has said that the more you have the saggier your womb and muscles get and therefore have more risk of it staying unstable. This is my 6th. Every baby might be individual but its the same saggy womb its in. If she stays stubborn, doc said will be in at 37 weeks and have cs at 39/40 weeks. Why waste tax payers money keeping me in and just not do it earlier lol. I don't like being trapped in there.

Youngest DS was transverse, accidently discovered at 36 weeks, they had me in at 37 weeks. They decided not to turn him. But I stood solidly for hours rolling/rotating my hips and he put his head down long enough for them to whisk me off and break waters.

Now apparantly they don't do that...if they turn, they send you home. My point is as another poster said, how do they know they won't turn back!!! My last was only discovered cos I had a stand in midwife who thought he would be big (he wasn't) but especially if you are larger, they can't tell where the head is. My midwife said he was in position and head was engaging.

If you start in labour and get in ok and they discover they are transverse, fair enough but what if waters break, which is the reason why at 37 weeks they have you in, even if they don't do anything now. It seems really lax :(

duckmum · 30/01/2011 08:29

My DC1 has imitated a washing machine on its spin cycle for weeks mainly ending up transverse/oblique or breech until last week. Felt baby turn, major upheaval alien style(at some unearthly hour) and scan at 34 weeks has shown head down engaged! Also place where I feel kicks has changed.

My placenta is at the back so tend to feel all movements!
If you have a low placenta which I did for most of pregnancy this can stop babies from being the right way. This gets picked up at 20 week scan to begin with then later scan when they recheck the placenta position.

belgina · 31/01/2011 13:57

You've still got loads of time.
My dd2 went breech at 36 weeks. Transverse at 37 and then turned herself back to cephalic at 37 too. I ended up having a hb.

beckie90 · 31/01/2011 16:24

theres definately room gold there still quite small around 3 pounds, mine was head down for 3 weeks and last night turned breech its still quite normal for them to turn around alot at this point, im 29 weeks too. just hope he gets hiself turned back round the correct way again :)

JustKeepSwimming · 17/02/2011 20:39

Well baby has turned yey Grin

It must have bee yesterday when i was getting a right old beating, though I hadn't realised it had turned, went to MW appt telling her she'd lost her bet that it would turn by now ...then she had a feel and said, nope, i win, it's longitudinal Grin

She thinks head down, but having had an undiagnosed breech before, we're still planning on a scan around 37wks to confirm it, the hb was where she predicted though and there are kicks where the feet should be, so am feeling quite positive today :)

(am 31weeks)

DD2 was resolutely transverse. Went in for a scan at 37+6 to check for section (planned the next day) and she had turned.

DS was resolutely breech. Had him turned at 37 wks and luckily he stayed put for another week when he was induced.
