Gaviscon (aniseed flavour) helped for me, and drinking soda water.

Things like fruit juice made it much much worse.

Louii · 27/01/2011 20:40

Zantac (ranitidine) tablets were the only thing that helped me, anything else was just a waste of time.

felicity10 · 27/01/2011 20:41

Gaviscon - mint flavour - aniseed is evil stuff imo!

You can get massive bottles on prescription btw, keep in your handbag and sip classily straight out of the bottle after each meal so that it is not so bad before you go to bed. I sympathise.

Ahh, the glamour of pregnancy!

Wigeon · 27/01/2011 20:41

Large quantities of Gaviscon (or Sainsbury's much cheaper equivalent). You will be pleased to know it disappears as soon as you've had the baby!

I haven't identified any foods which make it worse / better - I seem to get it loads for a few days, then not at all for a few days.

Wigeon · 27/01/2011 20:42

Oh yes, doctor friend of mine said it's worth dosing up just before bed because it is often worse at night when you are lying down, and it might then irritate your throat and make it worse the following day. So attempting to stop it at night could help with the next day.

Roxy33 · 27/01/2011 20:43

I doubled up on my pillows so I'm sleeping a bit more upright which has really helped - that and ice cream / hot milk before i go to bed :o

Ohforfoxsake · 27/01/2011 20:44

Refreshers were recommended to me. I became addicted!

Ohforfoxsake · 27/01/2011 20:45

Get gaviscon from your MW, she should give it to you for nowt.

felicity10 · 27/01/2011 20:45

Ahh yes, the stack of pillows to sleep against...remember those!

Not eating fatty foods at dinner was helpful, had fish and chips once and that was the worst!

PavlovtheCat · 27/01/2011 20:47

only thing that worked for me was omeprazole as prescribed by GP after i tore the lining of my stomach throwing up the acid! Shock. Worked a treat. If it is really bad it might be worth a trip to your gp, it was around 36wks or so that mine became unbearable.

And I also preferred aniseed gaviscon to the 'original' flavour, when it did work a bit for me. Not really sure if it did work at all though Hmm.

And also found sitting upright helped a little. In fact, lying down made it even worse/would cause me to throw up (altough, to be fair, everything caused me to throw up!)

onepieceoflollipop · 27/01/2011 20:49

felicity no you are wrong it has to be aniseed. Grin

Although I agree with the last part of your post, I had half litre (500ml) bottles on prescription. I had awful awful sickness and the GP was lovely. She told me to swig the gaviscon regularly as if I had ongoing heartburn this would stop me eating so much and potentially lead to more sickness. (if I didn't eat and drink every 2 hours or so I was sick)

felicity10 · 27/01/2011 21:00

onepieceoflollipop No, no, aniseed flavour, aniseed balls and fennel are all evil imo and should be banned. Grin

cocoachannel · 27/01/2011 21:01

Thank you everyone! Will dose up on the Gaviscon and pile up the pillows whilst counting myself lucky that it's not hit me til so late it my pregnancy!

Sorry, that is absolutely no help to OP but had to set the record straight about aniseed!

I've just remembered also drank a glass of milk before bed, cold worked for me.

And for those that told me that it would mean that my baby must have lots of hair....WRONG - hardly any...and still not much a year later!

KarenHL · 27/01/2011 21:05

I had awful acid too - poor you. Eventually the hospital prescribed me some Ranitidine (which someone also recommends above) - pretty much completely sorted it for me.

Someone else has recommended Mackies white icecream in the past on MN (sold in most supermarkets). Don't know why it should help, but it did! Just not as much as the ranitidine.

onepieceoflollipop · 27/01/2011 21:09

felicity neither of my dds had hair until the age of 2 years, (well they had a tiny bit of baby hair)

Anyway, they both have absolutely gorgeous hair now they are older, both blonde, one a curly goldilocks and one very straight. (the sort of hair grown women pay a lot of money to achieve. :) )

KarenHL I did eat Mackies icecream but I had no idea it had been recommended on mnet. I don't eat icecream normally but did during pregnancy.

Chynah · 27/01/2011 21:41

go to your gp (not MW) and get omeprazole prescribed - absolutely fantastic.

nomoreheels · 27/01/2011 23:11

My sympathies. I'm 22 wks & evening heartburn seems to have crept up on me. I'm fine in the day, just gets worse when I lie down I guess. (Having a stinking cold doesn't help either!)

I'm going back to my gp for omeprazole, but second liquid Gaviscon. I'm out of it though so have had to settle for some Rennies & Gastrocote tablets. The Gastrocote ones are vile though, a sort of fizzy butterscotch flavour. Better than lying awake in pain though.

Flisspaps · 27/01/2011 23:18

ASDA's own antacids saw me through the last 4 months of pregnancy. However any kind of chalky sweet should work - think Refreshers, Parma Violets, Love Hearts - that sort of thing. Gaviscon tastes fucking rank.

YogaMummy2B · 27/01/2011 23:41

I am currently reading this thread, propped up on 2 pillows after having swigged half a bottle of gaviscon feeling like my oesophagus may dissolve any minute!! I have found to my detriment that red meat or fatty food makes things much worse. Curses to the delicious grilled Aberdeen Angus burger I had for dinner!
Off to hobble through my SPD pain to the kitchen to try a glass of milk before I cry! Glamour is my middle name BTW!!
Thanks for post and tips!

YogaMummy2B · 27/01/2011 23:46

Ps. Meant to add, it was Mint flavoured. I can't believe that aniseed would add to the experience any. Infact it is likely to remind me of drinking too much Pernoid and bitter lemon when I was younger. Told you - glamour is what I'm all about!! I'm sure that caused me heart burn rather than remedied it!

perpetuallypregnant · 28/01/2011 00:24

My heartburn is so bad this pregnancy, I had a curry few weeks ago and before it even got down I threw it up along with blood :(
Gp said it's been irritating my stomach so I am also on ranitidine which has helped a lot although I am struggling to eat very much, anything rich makes me feel sick. I'm only 26 weeks so really hoping the ranitidine keeos it sorted as Ill be skin and bones by 40 weeks otherwise!

nomoreheels · 28/01/2011 08:18

Oh yes - burgers - I had a truly dreadful experience with a (most delicious) cheeseburger last Friday. Cue me being up nearly all night with vicious heartburn and other delightful symptoms. Sad

Never. Again. (well, until after baba arrives anyhow!)

BabyValentine · 28/01/2011 09:49

Sleep on your lefthand side - your stomach is on your left so should then be lower than your oesophagus, meaning that the reflux has to work against gravity.

ThatllDoPig · 28/01/2011 11:36

REMEGELS or CHEWY MINTY RENNIES!! sorry to shout, but no-one else has mentioned and they are life savers. Keep a packet by the bed. They work and really quickly too. Good luck
