Clothes for newborn girls that aren't baby pink

I hate baby pink. I know it's irrational but it's icky. I'm having a dd in April and want to do some shopping for basics. They're all bloody baby pink.

Can anyone suggest somewhere to look for sleeps suits, cardi, jackets etc that are a bit more funky?

I had the same problem with DD (now 6 yrs old so it looks as if things haven't changed regarding the icky pink!)

Best bet for me was to try the French catalogues (La Redoute, Vertbaudet). Some really lovely stuff with strong colours.

Am 33 wks with DC3 and don't know the gender so I'm going to go down the Tesco/Asda Everything Is White route for the first few weeks.

H and M seems fairly good at times too, btw.

Loubilouu · 20/01/2011 15:20

ahhh someone else that agrees with me on this one :)
im also looking for shops that sell girl clothes not all pink!
suggestions would help alot! (:

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 20/01/2011 15:28

I think they are called "unisex" and tend to be white or cream for newborns.

I second H&M - they generally have something. And the Scandinavian shops have great bold colours - google "Scandinavian kids clothes". I didn't buy anything pink for DD (you'll get given pink though so it is unavoidable)

strawberrylace · 20/01/2011 15:32

sainsburys have cheap funky girls clothes - some are pink/purple but vibrant colours not pastels

nomoreheels · 20/01/2011 15:32

TK Maxx often has some of the scandinavian clothing lines in their baby section (along with lots of vile cutesy pink and blue standard stuff)

I've just found out that I'm having a DD (EDD early June) and I will be banning pink as much as possible.

SecretNutellaFix · 20/01/2011 15:33

I know a lot of people don't like mothercare but they do

I am also having a girl this April and don't like all the sickly pink.

For funky girls clothing try, 'little asos' and Next have some cool baby basics at the mo.

JeanLouiseFinch · 20/01/2011 15:37

Look at Polarn O Pyret, available from House of Fraser. They have a small amount on their website but much more in the larger shops. Everything is very colourful.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 20/01/2011 15:38

Hello, my DD is 5 months and I hate hate hate baby pink.... Mil said to me pre baby "oh i do like a little girl in pink" ha, not mine!

I find boots, john lewis, asos, gap, sainsburys believe it or not, mothercare all good... Gap have the cutest body suits right now, cream covered in a retro pear pattern, or boots have some cool breton striped stuff, v funky... Can you tell I'm glad I had a girl?!

soppypreggyloon · 20/01/2011 16:19

Cheers all!

I think the problem is worst when they are under a year. All our shops have baby pink up to 1 then it's fine. I'll have a shop round but will be avoiding mothercare as the sleepsuits I bought ds stretched out of shape after a couple of washes and were wrecked after 6 wks!

soppypreggyloon · 20/01/2011 16:21

Oops...

Gap are silly sizes- v small and ours is TINY- 2 buggies and it's a serious traffic jam!
Next only have twee stuff in our shop
H and m is very hit and miss selection- and I hate rummaging!

Unisex is very boring if you know what your having IMO. I'd like something colourful more

Thanks for the suggestions

can I show this to my MIL who is insisting on knitting pink stuff regardless of how much I ask her not to? (nearly did an AIBU on this - isn't really rude to ignore a specifically stated request like that?) She keeps saying that because I put DS in blue I haven;t got a leg to stand on. I keep trying to explain its not gender politics, I just hate that wishy washy, palepink. I saw M&S had a whole rack of baby girl clothes that weren't pink and got some bits in monsoon as well (very much in the sale however, with about 90% off!)

Eglu · 20/01/2011 20:02

Hope you find some nice stuff. I'm pg with DC3 and if it's a girl I will be avoiding pink too. Only had boys so far, so not been an issue before.

cowboylover · 20/01/2011 20:07

I am glad its not just me!

I had a few really lush bright colour things from TX Maxx but as usual with there you never know what you are going to find.

Off now to look at La Redoute Smile

stressheaderic · 20/01/2011 20:08

I hated the sickly pink but my DD was born with lots of striking dark hair and actually suits it. Good job as many, many people bought us pink stuff. In fact, nearly everyone.
I had quite a few bright and bold coloured tops and tunics from Boots Mini Club.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/01/2011 20:12

Zara is good. Nordic Kids. Debenhams also good for bright non pink bits.

domesticungoddess · 20/01/2011 20:15

I buy boys ones for my DD.

mejon · 20/01/2011 20:16

Our very small M&Co has some lovely baby clothes (well not so much the tiny baby stuff but up to 18mths or so). Lots of reds, navy, stripes, spots etc. I've also managed to get a few colourful bits in the House of Fraser sale online (think they were Pumpkin Patch). Next do some funky sleepsuits that aren't all pink and there were some colourful unisex and bright girl's ones on the Woolworths website at the weekend.

CaptainNancy · 20/01/2011 20:17

Hahaha- my DD never wore pink, even now has nothing pink (5). JL is fantastic atm- loads f really gorgeous things in bold colours.
Unisex stuff is great as it can be reused by any baby (and will have next to no wear in the smallest sizes- babies are v easy on their clothes, poo explosions notwithstanding!)

sungirltan · 20/01/2011 20:22

vertbaudet, tkmaxx again, blue zoo at debenhams, gap, boden, green baby, john lewis sometimes.

i have a dd and hated all the pink too. i shop for her at the above. even tesco have osme quite nice bright stuff :-)

littleyellowchicken · 20/01/2011 20:26

I have just dismantled a pale pink-covered Moses basket and redesigned it in rainbow colours. Had also thought of dying some of the white/neutral sleepsuits in brighter colours. Will probably not get around to it but it is another option. I got lovely stripey sleepsuits in Mothercare.

PassionKiss · 20/01/2011 20:43

YY blue zoo @ debs and gap v good. Boots goes through good phases as does Mothercare. I have found some nice stuff in Tesco but had to trawl through a lot of pink to find it!

My pet hate is 2/3 packs of anything. One is always ok and one always has some hideous pink bunny on or says I love my mummy

I actually like pink and DD has lots of pink clothes, I just object to that sickly pink they use for baby girl clothes!

frikadela · 20/01/2011 22:12

I have found the supermarkets have quite a lot without pink and M&Co and matalan. They grow out of things so fast that I dont think its worth spending loads of money on.

My problem was finding something non pink and non disney. I gave in and now dd owns more clothes with minnie mouse on than I care to mention.

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 21/01/2011 10:52

What I just cannot understand, is that there are so many people out there who hate pale vomit pink clothes and yet the shops still insist on stocking it as the main colour for little girls.

I really hope I have a little girl (we aren't finding out) and I'm going to have so much fun hunting down lovely none vomit pink clothes for her, if I do.

To be fair though I have seen some lovely pink stuff. It's always a lovely dark, vibrant pink colour though.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 21/01/2011 10:58

dd2 is wearing these
