Is fresh blood normal in early labour? 38+5

38+5 now and having regular painful contractions - not excruciating but not BH either, about every 5-7 minutes.

I started losing my mucus plug this week, yesterday it was pink tinged then nothing more until tonight, about an hour ago, when a big bit of blood fell out. Since then I have been bleeding pretty much like a period and have soaked two pads. It doesn't seem to have much discharge to it. Feeling like I am having a period actually.

Should this be something I should phone the midwife about?

i think you need to phone your midwife if you are bleeding

deemented · 19/01/2011 20:16

Yes. If you have soaked through two pads in an hour, then yes.

Ring ASAP.

CrispyTheCrisp · 19/01/2011 20:17

I would call the MW

I have not been in labour, but had a bleed from a low lying placenta so needed to go in straight away. Do you know if your placenta is low lying?

lollyheart · 19/01/2011 20:17

Yes phone midwife asap to let them know what's happening, I bled like that with my first, but best get it checked out.[]smile]

4andnotout · 19/01/2011 20:17

I've bled in 3 out of 4 of my labours, I'd ring the mw and just see I she needs you to get checked out though :) Good luck xx

mum295 · 19/01/2011 20:18

Yes, phone The midwife! My waters never broke, I just bled and had quite a fast labour. Midwife who admitted me to hospital was concerned about blood, but a friend has since told me she had the same and she had a quicker labour too.

For me, labour was very much like bad period pain to start with...

Keep us posted and good luck x

They are only small sanitary towels designed for light periods, not maternity pads, just to clarify!

Is it not normal to have fresh blood as part of mucus plug?

I bled in early labour and it was an abruption.

Go to the hospital now, ring then on the way and tell them

I don't mean to be scary but it is important. Go now!

LotteryWinnersOnAcid · 19/01/2011 20:19

Oh my, I don't know the position of my placenta, it has never been mentioned.

Will phone the midwife!

Seriously, please stop dithering on here an ring your MW. Might be something, might be nothing. Better safe than sorry.

Lulumaam · 19/01/2011 20:21

you would have been advised if you had low lying placenta

bleeding in early labour can be either a bad sign ( abruption etc ) or a sign of fast dialtion as little blood capillaries etc rupture...

however, it is something that needs flagging up and I would strongly recommend you call labour ward now and I would imagien you'd be advise to come in and be looked at

midori1999 · 19/01/2011 20:24

I hope all is OK and you are being looked after.

OffToNarnia · 19/01/2011 20:40

Call labour ward. I had this in both pregnancies and was - as someone else has mentioned- fast dilation. All was well but labour ward wanted me in and babies were quick! Because I was what the midwife called a 'bleeder' was put on [I think] oxytocin drip after baby was born to contract womb quickly and prevent further bleeding. Hope you have rung labour ward. Good luck!

WorzselMummage · 19/01/2011 22:34

Hope everything's ok x

LotteryWinnersOnAcid · 19/01/2011 23:59

Thanks for all your advice earlier. Phoned and was asked to come into delivery suite. Was examined and monitored and it turned out it was just a very heavy bloody show, apparently the expulsion of my mucus plug caused the bloody fluid to be dislodged.

I am in early labour and will hopefully be going back in ASAP! For now I'm back home. Contractions are between 5-8 minutes apart still but according to the midwife who examined me my cervix is closed so not sure how quickly things can progress based on that.

Thanks again for the quick responses!

Not to be too graphic but if they had a good poke around labour will probably go quite quickly now.

Go back in as soon as you feel ready- don't think it will be hours and hours.

LotteryWinnersOnAcid · 20/01/2011 02:32

Contractions closer and bloody painful now, looks like we will be going in again within the hour. I've never done this before so no idea whether I'm being a wimp or not but OUCH!

Hurrah LotteryWinner, I'm 38+4 and very very jealous! Hope it all went brilliantly!!

MistleToad · 20/01/2011 08:36

I hope you have your lovely baby by now Lottery!

midori1999 · 20/01/2011 09:12

Congratulations! Glad all is well.

Yes it is ouch, you're not being a wimp!

LauLauLemon · 20/01/2011 09:18

Glad all is well.

With my first labour I went from 1cm dilated to 10cm dilated in four hours.

With my second I went from 0cm dilated to 10cm in an hour and didn't realise I was in real labour until I was pushing on the living room floor.

I know my experience is not 'the norm' but I just wanted to give you some hope that labour isn't always long and torturous Grin.

WorzselMummage · 20/01/2011 09:20

Really glad it wasnt anything worrying!

Bet you have a lovely squigy baby now :D
