Where to shop for baby boys clothes that aren't predominantly blue/ khaki, or covered in cars, diggers, spaceships etc?

Hello all,

I am 20 weeks pregnant with a little boy and am just starting to look about at the clothes on offer. Am frankly a bit annoyed at the lack of nice clothing for baby boys I have found in places like Next. They mainly seem to have diggers/ cars/ spaceships etc on them and be in shades of blue/ grey/ brown etc. I would like to kit DS out in some less stereotypical clothing - nice bright colours as well as neutrals but avoiding the mini outfit type thing (no shirts and jeans or [shudder] baby chinos) although nice dungarees are always lovely.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks

I'm 23 wks pg with a DS (first baby) and me and DP have been dismayed at all the ridiculous genderising of clothes (girl's pink crap as much as boy's sludgy trains rubbish). But we've found some lovely things that aren't too expensive by looking around... okay, due to me obsessively searching the internet!

My fave place of all is Loveitloveitloveit! Apt name, because that's what you'll squeal when you see their stuff! And there's a sale on at the mo, too (a bit expensive to get basics from on a regular basis, for my budget). Have picked up some lovely stuff from John Lewis that I would happily put a boy or girl in and love Boden stuff too, although it's a bit pricy. Nordic Kids and Bob & Blossom also good.

Am now going to look at some of the suggestions on here that I've not heard of :)

I know what you mean, DS has an awful lot of tops with bugs, trucks etc on them. He loves them though. DD on the other hand has some really beautiful outfits. Shopping for girls is much easier, and enjoyable.
Boots, pumpkin patch, GAP and debenhams are ok, there's a swedish company that does clothes with nice bright colours, I can't remember their name at the minute, I'll have to dig out some of DS's things.

KangarooCaught · 19/01/2011 21:05

There doesn't seem to be the one store but have to search it out amongst the grey/brown dinge. Like others I recommend:

John Lewis
Some Next & M&S
JoJoMamanBebe
Debenhams
Occasionally M&Co (although their sizing is odd)

Frugi is lovely but for me only in the sale, same for Boden at that age.

mamatomany · 19/01/2011 21:11

Emile et bebe for traditional cute outfits, www.guycollection.co.uk, www.blueisforboys.co.uk

BeatRoute · 19/01/2011 21:12

Blue Zoo at Debenhams is my favourite for boys.

EachPeachPearMum · 19/01/2011 21:12

JL, White company, Vertbaudet, and sometimes sainsbury (selectively) Green Baby have nice things too, and have just started selling through JL. Any of the Skandi companies have great stuff, with cool non-dumper truck prints or funky colours.

Hema (a dutch company) do nice colours too. And Gap.

jellycat · 19/01/2011 21:18

I bought some lovely bright sleepsuits for a friend's newborn ds last week.

I'm afraid it only gets harder to find nice stuff for boys as they get older (this has been a perennial topic on MN over the years!).

jellycat · 19/01/2011 21:19

I meant to say, I bought the sleepsuits in M&S!

theresapotatoundermysink · 19/01/2011 21:22

Mothercare have some funky ones. I have a little girl and have gotten her ones with elephants, stripes, owls etc and they have nice boy ones too. And they usually do a buy one get one half price offer on sleep suits, so you can get 2 packs of 3 for £20.

mummyshreddingnora · 19/01/2011 21:22

I prefer the bright colours too - DS really suits them

I have got some fab tops in next like this but not those exact ones... last catalogue

also got a lovely dungarees set in john lewis... choc brown dungee's with a stripy t-shirt under which was turqoise / orange / white - I heart that lots... can't believe he's outgrown it! :(

CupcakesHay · 19/01/2011 21:28

Oooh- what a lovely thread to discover... I know what you mean about next, etc. but there are some bright ones out there - i've seen some fab different bright types of babygrows in mothercare - but this thread has got some amazing sites on - so thank you!

theresapotatoundermysink · 19/01/2011 21:33

Scorpette, I don't know whether to thank you or not for showing me the LoveIt website. I was not planning an online shopping splurge. At least I've got some of DDs summer wardrobe sorted, right? Right?

misdee · 19/01/2011 22:09

oh, i was in Next today, and the boys section (3months+) was awash with lots of bright colours. i almost whooped in delight Blush

Hi there Storm in a CCup. I am the owner of Yellow Lolly and I make it my mission to try to find interesting and gender neutral stuff for boys - of course I still get in a few stereotypical bits and bob as they are still liked by many. We have a 50% sale on at present and unfortunately there isn't a great deal left - but do take a look. Our new stock starts arriving very soon and we are constantly offering discounts to our existing customers and peeps that have signed up to our newsletters - we even had had a mumsnet discount code in the past which we will of course do again.
Hope you like what you see....yellowlolly.com

mslucy · 20/01/2011 16:30

Green baby is my favourite (they have lots of sales). Also like Frugi.

You can find some super cheap and not bad stuff on Asda for basics and mothercare also does some quite nice colourful clothes for boys.

M&S not bad for older boys but their baby stuff is RANK.

StormInaCCup · 21/01/2011 11:55

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I can't say thank you enough for all the wonderful suggestions that people have made. I have followed some up, but will make it my mission to check out all and see what funky brights I can stock up for my wee man.

I have to eat my words about Next - got the new catalogue and there are some lovely new bright stuff- I particularly like these:

gorgeous bright babygrows

Lets hope this is the start of plenty more variation in boys clothes!!

Blue zoo is great for brightly coloured boys clothes. DS has loads from there (thank god for sales!) asda are normally ok to.

lizem · 10/02/2011 14:04

I also got extremely fed up with the lack of boys clothes and they all seemed pretty boring.
It seems that most clothes shops have rails and rails of pink baby girls clothes and just a very small selection of boys clothes.

I've decided that something needed to be done so I'm selling just boys clothes on Ebay!

As I am starting out I would love some suggestions/feedback as to what kind of range to get and what clothes appeal to people.

You are welcome to have a look.

I'm really happy somebody has brought this up.
I'm expecting DS2 and was disappointed at the selection of boys clothes, just how dull they are. DS1 mostly gets things from Boden and Jojo maman.
John lewis ok, they did a nice range with cowboys on them in good colours last year.
I found success with H&M which are reasonable in interesting clothes. I think lots of "foreign" shops do brighter ranges. I've given up with next, I don't want either of my boys to look like dudes.
