Hi,i am 37wks with 5th baby and have measured big all the way thru,i am now measuirng 45cms and mw didnt seem worried as consultant saw me at 33 and knew i was big.
I am booked for a section on the 27th so no worries re birth but i am a little concerned about the effect on my poor body of being this big.I can hardly move, sleep or breath and my ribs are being pushed out and its agony.Surely the body isnt ever meant to be the equivalent of 45wks pg Shock
Has anyone else experienced this.

Not had experience of this myself. But assumably you have been checked for gestational diabetes and the amount if fluid you are carrying? Can you get another appointment with your consultant to put your mind at ease? Or at least discuss with your midwife?

Wishing you some comfortable days.

Hiya I had similar with DS 3. I was huge.... Everyone commented on how it must be twins at least. I was tested for GD (negative) and after a late scan induced. Ds was 10lb 130z. The birth was actually my best out of all 4 and my body recovered quicker than my previous 2 births.

queenofboak · 15/01/2011 09:29

I was 52cms at 37 weeks! Told to expect 10lb plus baby.

She was 7lb 14! I was pretty Blush think i over did the eating (quit smoking) i also had loads of fluid

queenofboak · 15/01/2011 09:31

Hit send to soon!

I was in loads of pain, felt like i was being crushed. Baby was fine though.

Good Luck!

ledkr · 15/01/2011 09:34

Thats just like i felt it was awful. Worth it in the end thoughSmile

queenofboak · 15/01/2011 09:38

Also i spent the last few weeks on the sofa, couldn't sleep in a bed.

cjdamoo · 15/01/2011 09:40

At the end walking to the kitchen for a cuppa was hell. I remember vividy feeling like breathing was a struggle and actually been scared my skin was going to rip in two. I was also convinced my belly would forever be an overhanging mess. It was actually back flat within 4 months :o shame its never been that way since ds 4 a tiddly 7lber arrived.

JenniL1977 · 15/01/2011 09:48

I'm only on my first pg at 9 weeks, so no experience of this yet, but am expecting to be the same - I was 52cm when born (9lb) and my brother was 58cm (10lb5), my mum's size 8 and had us both naturally and says we were both pretty easy, altho she was v uncomfortable with my brother towards the end. He's now 6 foot 7!!
My best friend was measuring 54cm at 36wks, her ds born at 38wks and he was 7lb and only 40cm. They do get it wrong.
Sorry yr feeling uncomfortable tho x

Squaredance · 15/01/2011 09:53

I had this, was off the scale at 37 weeks. A late scan showed polyhydramious (excess amniotic fluid). I had to insist to get the late scan though, the MW said I was just having a large baby but I wanted to know what was going on in there for definite!

Anyway, I had baby, she was 7lb 6oz and I had at least two buckets of fluid in there too that came out Smile There is most likely no cause for polyhydramnious.

I was ENORMOUS. So big they recommended me for antenatal physio appointments for tips to cope with being so big, such as sleeping positions and moving around. The physio said I had the separation thingy (when your muscles seperate at the front tummy because your bump is so enormous) which worried me as he said you can only repair it with an operation!!! however, although my body didn't look too pretty for a good 4-6 months after the birth, the good news is that after 9-10 months despite still being a bit chunky round the thighs, my body totally went back to normal, so being so big in pg did me no lasting damage. I didn't get wrinkly baggy tummy or anything and I was 38 too and not a gym bunny Smile So don't worry, you should forget you ever felt like you do now Smile

I know you can't sleep/move/breathe/get up/eat your dinner without sitting with your chair pushed right back/sit on any hard chair for long before feeling like you're going to suffocate Grin I have been there!!! In the last weeks a bouncy ball gave some relief, I recommend you get one.

Good luck!!!

ScroobiousPip · 15/01/2011 10:12

So sorry you are uncomfortable.

I was a size 8 and DS was also apparently 'off the scale', with the consultant predicting an 11lb+ baby, and strongly recommending a section. The last two weeks were really, really uncomfortable (with SPD in my public bone too) but in the end, I had a straightforward home birth and DS was born at 9lb, 2oz, 55cm long (the MW reckons it was his length, and being curled up inside me which fooled everyone). I was up and about the next day and, while my body is never going to be quite the same again, I don't have stretch marks and am the same weight as pre-baby.

Hopefully, you will recover just as well. Good luck. Smile

greenbeanie · 15/01/2011 12:24

Know exactly how you feel, measured very big with all my babies, scans predicting big birth weights and they were right!
ds1 - 9lb15 born at 39wks
ds2 - 10lb7 born at 40wks
dd1 - 11lb11 born 12 days over

Last 2 labours were the easiest (2.5hrs and 1hr40), no tears, just very long babies in proportion for their length and weight. But yes, extremely uncomfortable for the last few weeks of pregnancy. The only position that was comfortable was kneeling on the sofa and leaning over the arm!! All the evidence with regards to big babies state that a caesarean or induction should not be used purely on the grounds of a suspected large baby. This is backed up by the college of gynaecologists and obstetricians and NICE.

Good luck, not long now

PDR · 15/01/2011 20:24

Hi ledke [waves]

I am encouraged that a CS / induction is not used purely on the grounds that the baby is large - I am also and consultant said baby weighed 6lbs 9 already at 35wks. I am wondering what this combined with high blood pressure might make them want to do?

I am definately not a size 8 though so perhaps as I have a big frame they might not worry?

PDR · 15/01/2011 20:25

Sorry ledk r Blush

greenbeanie · 15/01/2011 21:26

PDR, high bp shouldn't make much of a difference as long as it is controlled. I certainly wasn't a size 8 either nor did I have gestational diabetes, just big babies. I had a scan at 34+5 which estimated the weight at 7lb10 - which was rather scary to say the least!!!

hidingmytrueidentity · 15/01/2011 21:31

Don't worry about measurements. My concerningly small baby was 11.5ilbs and 60cms when he was born- only 3 days after they had last told me how small he was.

I was actually larger with my other child. 8 13 but excess water. From 6 mo this everyone said- won't be long now grrrrrr

ledkr · 15/01/2011 22:41

yeah that is weird as if the size outweighs the gestation.want to go to the end just to prove it haha. Thanks for the reassurance i feel a lot less worried than yesterday.12 days now countdown to breathing and walking again, woo!

you must feel so much better having an "end" in sight! I could potentially keep growing for another 7 weeks Shock!

ledkr · 15/01/2011 23:00

yes i am so gratefull for that,i said to dh i could potentially go until mid Feb if hadnt had previous sections.I would have to break my own waters with a crochet hook (grin)

kelly2525 · 16/01/2011 00:20

Midwife told me last week that im expecting a 9lber, tbh I dont think I am, shes not taking into account my spare tyre, the one ive had since before I was pregnant, and the fact that im carrying gallons of fluid, I have huge, big. hard, rock solid, sore, swollen legs.

My appetite is huge, so I think its just fat and water, not a big baby, cos according to a scan 6 weeks ago he was too small.

I will find out soon enough I suppose, Im two days overdue, {gets on her knees and prays to the baby jesus, the virgin mother, santa clause, the tooth fairy and the easter bunny that she isnt having a huge fat headed baby}

Blackletterday · 16/01/2011 01:32

I was massive with my ds1, 50+ at 38 weeks (when I had a section). I even had pg women approaching me saying it was the biggest bump they had ever seen.

I had the gtt at 28 weeks which was negative, but I think I had sub-clinical diabetes tbh, seeing as I had full blown gd in my next pg. Honestly the hospital gown didn't fit round me, it was so uncomfy, I had so much fluid in there they called it a paddling pool. I was so uncomfortable I spent a good portion of the last weeks in bed.

They couldn't even hear the hb because there was so much fluid. Ds1 was 9lb10oz and healthy btw.

Not much you can do at 37 weeks really but ride it out. My stomach was never flat before dd nevermind ds1, but it's a disaster zone now. I'm sure if the flab abated I'd find seperated muscles.

With the next baby I was diagnosed with gd, and took insulin along with controlled diet. I actually had quite a neat bump with him (measuring the right dates just before c-section), not that much fluid and he was 8lb9oz, rather than the 13lb I'd been quoted at the scans Hmm.

Blackletterday · 16/01/2011 01:38

Scans are shit btw, I could tell ds2 was smaller than ds1 just from movements. I really really knew when ds1 was changing position, the movements were unreal. Nothing of the sort with ds2, just regular kicks/rolling he is longer than ds1, was 75th centile at 8 months so that probably threw the scan measurements out.

mejon · 16/01/2011 11:51

My MW is having kittens because I'm apparently measuring 40.5 at 39 weeks (was 38.5 at 38 weeks) so at my next appointment on Thursday at exactly 40 weeks she's going to possibly refer me to the consultant for an extra scan. Reading of the measurements here I can't really see why she's worrying that much tbh. I have plenty of pre-pregnancy padding, I've got 2 fibroids, my bump has fallen considerably and I'm sure I was lying in a more upright position during this last appointment so I'm sure that would account for the 'alarming' 2cm growth in a week. She's offered to give me a sweep on Thursday which I'm not sure about either though I'd really like to have this baby sooner rather than later but would rather it happened naturally.

PDR · 16/01/2011 14:18

mejon your MW sounds a bit Hmm TBH as a few cm out should not be cause for concern. Re sweep - I had 3 sweeps last time and they didn't do any good - I don't know anyone who actually went into labour after having a sweep but happy to be proved wrong!
