I was prescribed it during both my pregnancies as I suffered from really bad sickness and was going through so much of the stuff..My GP did the precription thing for a huge bottle of the stuff....

starlover · 04/10/2005 19:14

i only found out after i had my little boy!
i was getting through TONS of the stuff.. would have saved me a fortune

misdee · 04/10/2005 19:17

i had it on perscription and also decanted some into a smaller bottle for my bag. if i wasnt suffering from morning/all day sickness then i'd get really bad heartburn.

sweetheart · 04/10/2005 19:38

How do you manage this pleeeese!!!! I'd be so chuffed - I'm currently going through 2 of the 300ml bottles a week. Luckily Boots has it on buy one get one hald price at the moment but it's still costing me a fortune.

Would the Dr give me a prescription for as much as I needed or just for the odd bottle?

I've not had sickness, just really bad and fairly constant indegestion.

Nightynight · 04/10/2005 20:03

the question is, how regularly would they renew the prescription?

jambuttie · 04/10/2005 20:26

I did too thankfully as I drank it like juice

WigWamBam · 04/10/2005 20:31

My GP would have given me as many prescriptions as I wanted for a Gaviscon "equivalent" but he wouldn't prescribe Gaviscon. The stuff he prescribed for me was awful, completely ineffectual, but the surgery's policy was to prescribe generic medicines and not brand names. If they'll prescribe it, you should be able to have as many repeat prescriptions as you like.

ninah · 04/10/2005 20:33

sh let me know if he doesn't, I'll have a try with mine and mail you the stuff

bee3 · 04/10/2005 20:33

My midwife wrote me a prescription quite a few times during the normal course of our check-ups - heartburn was my only real complaint during the whole pregnancy, but god! was it dire, especially towards the end and I was literally swigging the stuff from the bottle

Lizzylou · 04/10/2005 20:36

Last time round was drinking it like water from around 25 weeks, am already on it now , got it on prescription from GP...it is soo expensive

sweetheart · 04/10/2005 20:37

Ninah - are you still on?

sweetheart · 04/10/2005 20:37

ninah · 04/10/2005 20:39

I got gaviscon on prescription when pg , but It really wasnt enough and be honest it make me seriously GAG, so I got the big chewable tablets which were a little helpful. I had ACUTE acid , so they put me on ranitadine in the end , which I must say is AMAZING, took one pill in morning and all the nastyness of acid and nausiuosness(sp?) went.

swizzles · 04/10/2005 23:05

my GP prescibed me HUGE bottles of the extra-strength stuff, which I decanted into smaller bottles so I could have a stock in every bag/part of the house

I felt embarrased having to keep renewing the prescription, thought they would suspect I was hooked on it!

In the end I got a prescription of Ranitidine, which solved the problem completely. So much more convenient

RedZuleika · 05/10/2005 09:26

I have Gaviscon Advance on my repeat prescription. My parents' surgery, however, won't prescribe Gaviscon anymore, just some (presumably cheaper) equivalent.

My last GP wouldn't prescribe Ranitidine during pregnancy - or at least not during the first trimester.

sweetheart · 05/10/2005 10:05

I've just phoned my sugery. I explained the situation to the receptionish and she's going to speak to the Dr for me and hopefully he'll agree to do a prescription without me having to have an appointment. She said he will probably just do it but he might want a quick phone consoltation first.

Excellent - thanks again MN'ers! You all so wise

TheRtHonBaronessEnidOBE · 05/10/2005 10:06

I got it on prescription

unfortunately it was crap and gaviscon advance was the only thing that worked

mandymac · 05/10/2005 10:24

I too got load of bottles of Gaviscon Advance on prescription. Didn't bother with decanting, just carried huge bottle everywhere and swigged from it at will .

Mrsbubsdevere · 05/10/2005 10:27

With dd1 and dd2 I needed two bottles of the largest bottles of a week minimum and luckily got it all on prescription, if I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to afford it.

Rachey1969 · 05/10/2005 15:30

The midwife should be able to sanction it for you, unfortunately you won't necessarily get gavisicon but some crap substitute!
