i am 4days over my due date and in alot of pain as i have a weak pelvis, i had a show 48hrs ago but nothing since. i have a son who is turning 1yr old on sunday and i really want to have had baby by then so i can be home for his birthday. im at my wits end and really would be greatful for some advice on what to try to start labour.

my husband refuses to have sex as he is convinced it'll hurt the baby (even though we all know that no matter what size his togger is that aint gonna happen!)
im not keen on the caster oil theory so any other suggestions are welcome!

thanx

Have you tried any raspberry leaf tea??

flamebat · 04/10/2005 15:36

For me it was pineapple, and milk of magnesia (laxative effect dose). Was 1 month over though, so she was pretty ready to pop anyway

midwifeandmumof2 · 04/10/2005 15:36

Oh, yes, and keeping as mobile as possible....

midwifeandmumof2 · 04/10/2005 15:37

yes, pineapple is supposed to be brilliant!

stillsmiling · 04/10/2005 15:46

Laxative was handy for anyone with pooing worrys

stillsmiling · 04/10/2005 15:56

i worry about taking things with laxative effects because they all say do not take in pregnancy!
i dont have means to get out and about so hard to get things. i have lactulose solution in house do you think thats safe enough to try?

flamebat · 04/10/2005 15:58

I have always gone with the theory that you aren't meant to take laxative effect things because the contracting of all your insidey bits can start off labour, but since that it is the aim, it seems fine iyswim?

Frizbe · 04/10/2005 16:07

Have you done the hot n spicy food route, and I know you have a dodgy pelvis, but a quick walk, or is that totally not poss (can fully understand if its not) do you have a birthing ball you could bounce on? could you borrow one?

stillsmiling · 04/10/2005 16:12

i have craved currys throughout pregnancy so think my body is now used to them! i have to go out for a few walks a day as i have a dog, im hoping its helping the baby come down. i cant get a birthing ball. i have heard that housework can do the trick (not that i havent been keeping the house clean already)do you think if i gave the place a good spring clean that mite do the trick? i just dont wanna ova do it un necceseraly

I tried jogging when I went over. Passed some very startled walkers. I think they thought I was in labour and running to get home! Only time I've ever jogged in my life.

Have to say that sex got 2 of mine going.

Third refused to budge and ended up having sweep as my BP was up and they were muttering about taking me in (and I wanted to do it at home).

Would suggest making an appointment. I tied to make one for my friend for the following day and she had her baby within hours. I know other people who have tried the hairdresser with similar effect. Of course you don't have to go but just making the booking is certain way of making baby think now is best time to get going. And of course if you book something luxurious like a foot massage, manicure whatever takes your fancy then even if my theory doesn't work you get to have a lovely time.

RedZuleika · 05/10/2005 10:14

I have heard people speak positively of acupuncture and / or reflexology. Haven't tried either though, myself.

CarolinaFullMoon · 05/10/2005 10:19

it'll happen when it happens. I tried all that stuff, inc £120-worth of acupuncture, and it did absolutely nothing. Neither did the sweep.

And don't knacker yourself walking round endlessly (which is what I did). OTOH don't put your feet up - it's bad for fetal positioning

hope it's soon...

Fangache · 05/10/2005 10:20

You don't need to have sex... you can just ask for a sample of his sperm!!

Oh and the female orgasm is supposed to help kick the uterus into action...... I had contractions within an hour of having sex (and orgasming).

JiminyCricket · 05/10/2005 10:25

Ok this will probably sound batty [and I'm really quite normal, honest] but when I was overdue I tried positive visualisation. Basically I was 8 days over, had been getting really sick and other signs of labour but then they would go away again for up to a week so I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere. Soo..when I went to bed one night i had a firm chat with the baby telling her that we could do it and that it would all be all right and then tried visualising the contractions and me coping with them really well - and they started at one am and I had dd by 4.30 am! OK, probably would have happened anyway, but I had been getting really stressed and a bit of me wondered whether it helped me relax and let go a bit.
On the sex thing [please excuse tmi] apparently it works because the hormones in semen are like the hormones they use to induce labour - and apparently [cringe] it is 10 x more effective if you swallow the semen instead - bet your husband would be more up for that

gravity · 10/10/2005 14:29

well? is there a baby yet?
otherwise sex!

princesspeahead · 10/10/2005 14:33

none of it works. go for a walk, then go to bed and get as much sleep as you can. you'll need it over the next couple of days!

good luck

gravity · 10/10/2005 14:35

are you telling me i fell for that with my first pregnancy? there must be some truth??????? or he just knew he wouldn't be getting it for a while!!!!

tex111 · 11/10/2005 12:58

I just read last night that nipple stimulation can induce pregnancy but you have to do it three hours a day! Basically it's supposed to be one hour in the morning, one midday and one at bedtime. Sounds pretty tedious to me but I know I would've given it a shot when I was overdue with DS.

Also told to take a bumpy car or bus ride and to name the baby and then 'call him/her out'. I tried everything with DS including reflexology and nothing worked, not even sex.

Well castor oil worked for me but i'm not telling you to do it, just saying that I know about 8 castor oil kids!

other than what you have already tried:

Try reflexology and use clary sage to massage into feet.

gravity · 11/10/2005 13:34

oh! just read the peppermint tea bit! it reminded me my gfriend was told raspberry leaf tea by her midwife.

Coathanger · 11/10/2005 13:39

Lucazade! I drank about 4 of those smaller bottles the day before my waters broke with DS2! Keeps your energy levels up for labour too!
