Hi everyone,

I have been really poorly with a horrible cold/cough and saw my GP which made my mind up about the swine flu jab.

Just a a tad concerned about side effects?? i had a jab to go on holiday last year and felt awful for a week after, please tell me its not the same?

I had mine 22nd December, and to date no ill effects - the nurse said some people have a very sore arm afterwards, but I didn't have any problem. HTH

LDNlady · 30/12/2010 19:49

I had mine on Dec 22nd also. And other than feeling like one of my horrid brothers had punched me in the arm I was absolutely fine. No itching around the area, no sniffles, nothing.

xkatyx · 30/12/2010 19:51

oh brilliant, im so nervous but at same time want it done, if i didnt have this dam cold i would of had it by now.

mosschops30 · 30/12/2010 19:56

I had it last year when pg and am urging all my pg friends to have it.
We have had pg admissions to intensive care its very scary.
You have made the right decision

Had mine a few months ago, sore arm for a day, no other ill effects at all.

FWIW, I get every cough & cold going, & so far, despite everyone else in my family getting bugs, I've had nothing.

It has been well tested, but if you are in 1st trimester then you can wait until 2nd to be on the safe side (though no real reason to delay). Personally, I went for it as was approaching 3rd trimester at the same time as the peak flu season was upon us, & unfortunately swine flu is particularly bad for pregnant women in their 3rd trimester - something to do with your reduced lung capacity in final trimester and the pneumonia-like complications brought on by swine flu. It felt like a risk I couldn't afford to take.

badkitty · 30/12/2010 20:00

Another here with no side effects at all!

Scouseem · 30/12/2010 20:02

Hi - me too, I'm booked in next Thursday, I been ill all through this with coughs, colds, sinuses I decided to get it done too but hubby off to canada for a week on the Monday so hoping I have no reaction! When I spoke to the nurse she said most people have no side effects other than a sore arm!

MainlyMaynie · 30/12/2010 20:14

I had mine last week. My arm felt a bit bruised if it was touched, but that was it!

mejon · 30/12/2010 20:25

I had mine a couple of months ago and I had no reaction at all - not even the slightly sore or red arm I usually get when I have the seasonal flu vaccine (asthmatic).

LizaJP · 30/12/2010 20:25

The official line from:

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Pandemic-flu/Pages/Adviceforpregnantwomen.aspx

"There is no evidence that inactivated vaccines, such as the seasonal flu vaccine, will cause any harm to pregnant women or their unborn baby. Every year, the seasonal flu vaccine is given to pregnant women who are at risk of flu.

The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency has given a clear recommendation that the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine Pandemrix can be given safely to all pregnant women."

My husband used to work in the lab where they developed vaccines for flu and apparently "inactivated" vaccines like this don't 'give' you flu, so the most you will get is a sore arm.

I'm 15 weeks pregnant and had the vaccine last week - my arm was sore for a couple of days, but when you consider the possible consequences of not having it, I'd say it's worth it.

autumnberry · 30/12/2010 20:38

25 weeks pregnant. Had vaccine last week. Slightly sore arm. Bit sniffly for few days. I have had a bad cold since being pregnant so decided that avoiding (hopefully) the flu via vaccine was preferable to catching it and feeling utterly awful.

stegasaurus · 30/12/2010 23:55

I had mine last week at 21 weeks and had no side effects. Not even the horribly aching arm that I had after the swine flu jab last year (I wasn't pregnant last year but got the jab because of my job). I'm not aware of any side effects or complications from having the jab but know the severe risks of getting swine flu while pregnant, and I come into contact with patients with flu at work so it was not a difficult decision for me.

thefurryone · 31/12/2010 09:01

I had it at 15 weeks had no ill effects if you discount the slightly sore arm!

bethan37 · 31/12/2010 09:13

Considering it now although was against it but its not the after effects its the long term effects i am worried about, anyone else?

Mummynumber2 · 31/12/2010 09:19

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and had it yesterday. I've got no redness or sore arm but I did have a bit of a headache and sleep for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon. It may have had nothing to do with the jab though as I sometimes have that anyway. I'm fine this morning. I figure that it's always going to be much better than getting flu while pregnant.

Mummynumber2 · 31/12/2010 09:22

I did worry about any long term effects to the baby but there is no evidence at all that it can be harmful. I decided that it would be more harmful to the baby if I got flu.

NatChrisBump · 31/12/2010 15:42

Had mine this morning. I do feel a bit 'snotty' this afternoon, but think this is more to do with the hubby having manflu!! :)

I thought it was going to hurt (goodness knows how I'll cope with labour!) but was really surprised that I didn't feel a thing.

geisha · 31/12/2010 15:47

Had mine 10 days ago (29 wks pregnant). Slightly sore arm to the touch for 48 hours, maybe a bit lethargic yesterday but fine otherwise. Lethargy could be more to do with stress though as had no heating or hot water for more than a week over Christmas! Also sent dh for his on Wed too!

sleb1 · 03/01/2011 10:48

Had one last year when I was pregnant. Lost the baby the following week. I'm pregnant again, no way am I having the vaccination

phonix · 03/01/2011 11:03

sleb - sorry to hear your loss! If you don't mind me asking...how far along in your pregnancy were you?
I'm 22 wks and literally just about to go out the door to have the jab...Confused
