Hi everyone,

I have been really poorly with a horrible cold/cough and saw my GP which made my mind up about the swine flu jab.

Just a a tad concerned about side effects?? i had a jab to go on holiday last year and felt awful for a week after, please tell me its not the same?

I had the jab when I was 23 weeks, no sore arm, felt a little tired and could have done with a duvet day the next day instead of a full day or work ( I can normally find any excuse).

I think its much safer to have it, am going to send hubby to have it too.

Every week some of us have miscarriages (had two myself) - many many women, every week, it's going on all the time.

At a time when some are having SF jabs, the miscarriages still happen, they don't stop, so some have to happen after SF jabs - doesn't mean the SF jab caused the miscarriages.

Worry if stats start to show higher rates of miscarriage in women who've had the jab (like the stats show higher rates of serious illness in pg women who get flu). Try not to worry about individual cases you hear about where a miscarriage has come close in time to a jab happening because statistically that has to happen even if the two aren't linked.

But sleb1, I can see how you wouldn't want to have it again in those circs. Whether or not it's the right decision I can understand where you're coming from - in your situation I'd always be wondering if I was a rare case where the jab did matter, even if most people really don't have to worry and the jab is safer than flu.

I usually have the vaccine (asthmatic) and still had it this year at 27 weeks pg.

Sore arm, nothing else. And never had proper flu either! Grin

I had mine on the 28th. Absolutely no noticeable side effects expect a slightly sore patch on my arm at the site of the injection but that only lasted about 2-3 days.

I'd much rather that than flu. You'll be fine.

witches · 03/01/2011 18:00

I was very apprehensive about it and as i work in a school rejected it when offered last year. However, had flu at start of december and was floored and decided to get it. Had it last week no side effects and felt absolutley fine. Understand its a tough decision! It is also available from the start of pregnancy this winter whereas last year only from 12 weeks.

xkatyx · 03/01/2011 18:06

I'm worried i'll have it and the baby will stop moving or something, i have been sitting here watching her wriggle and praying it doesn't do any harm.

I'm also worried about any side effects, i feel fed up have the tail end of a cold and cough and the thought of feeling ill makes me want to cry lol

No side effects here either, very slightly itchy at the injection site a couple of days afterwards, but I guess that's just the tissues healing.

Please don't worry - tens of thousands of medical professionals and tens of thousands of pregnant women have had the jab (or a very similar one) before, and any whiff of an unpleasant side effect would have been all over the tabloids.

cordiality · 03/01/2011 19:51

I'm 34 weeks pg, and I had my jab a week or so ago, bit of a sore arm, glands a bit up under my armpit I think, but that was it.

I strongly agree with hawthorn that an event (eg a miscarriage) that occurs after another event (eg a flu jab) does not necessarily imply causality, and there is no evidence whatsoever that the jab has any negative side effects on mother or baby.

What there is evidence of is the seriousness of catching seasonal or swine flu for pregnant women.

Please don't panic katy, the panic and worry itself is far more likely to be distressing for your little bean than the jab is! Have a nice warm bath and a milky drink and try to relax and not overthink things too much. You are doing a very good thing for you and tiny one, so be nice to yourself!

Hope you get some sleep x

21 weeks pregnant, had the jab on 23 December, no side effects. Could hardly feel the jab happening and by the time I got home I couldn't even see where it had been done!

xkatyx · 04/01/2011 16:38

Thank you all, i have had it done, didnt hurt at all, arm tiny bit sore .. hopefully that will be it.

Thank you all, it has been a really hard choice and im glad i had you all here.

I'm 24+3 and had mine last week after being very much against it to begin with, my main worry was also long term side effects but given that the vast majority of people DP and I know have some kind of flu at the moment I wasn't prepared to risk a stint in ICU!!

Jab itself was ok and just had a sore arm afterwards, DP has a bad cold now, but think he would have got that anyway with everything going around, I feel a little bit sniffly but nothing major.

doodledee · 05/01/2011 11:12

Had mine yesterday @ 22 weeks - also being very much against it initially. Considered high risk being A+E nurse in constant contact with flu cases (wanted it earlier but cold/cough) So far so good just tender arm, it is a worry not helped by nurse who obviously didn't have a clue about vaccine - didn't know what it was called and didn't have a clue what i was on about when i asked if it was one of the vaccines with thiomersal (mercury) in it. She just mumbled i doubt it otherwise i'd have to ask if u were allergic to mercury!! How many women out there know if they're allergic to mercury ??!! Honestly

MumOV4 · 05/01/2011 15:18

Didn't get to have mine when pregnant as the surgery I'm with sad not necessary. My little boy is now 2 weeks old and my midwife yesterday recommended me to go and have the jab as the immunity will pass on to him via my breastmilk. I called the surgery, went straight along and had this done immediately as they now have a drop in policy as the jab is so important!
My arm is very sore when the jab was done and red, hot and swollen although it is nothing compared to how bad things could potentially be if I or baby got the flu right now. I'd strongly advise any pregnany mother or new breastfeeding mother to go and get it!

Deliaskis · 05/01/2011 15:33

I had mine the week before Christmas. Am currently 33+4. Had a slightly sore arm for a couple of days but otherwise all fine.

I was initially completely against it but did lots of reading and research and as others have stated there is absolutely no evidence of risk to baby from having jab. There is however a risk to mother and baby if you get flu. So to me, it ended up being a logical choice - have jab = no definite risk of anything going wrong, but don't have jab = definite risk of getting flu leading to definite risk of problem.

Whilst I am very sympathetic to anyone who has suffered mc, I do think we need to be careful of falling into a 'post hoc ergo propter hoc' trap on this one. Afterwards does not necessarily mean because of (in fact more often than not it doesn't). It would be worrying if there was higher incidence of mc in vaccinated women, but there is no evidence for that, so we can only logically surmise that where mc has occurred, it has been unrelated to the vaccine.

Hi I'm 27+5 had a midwife appointment yday everything fine(having a girl). Enquired about the sf jab and she ushered me straight into a vaccination room. Needle didnt hurt one bit in and out... Only thing is my arm has been achey but they say thats the norm for a day or two!!! Advise any pregnant women to get it!! Good luck to you all xx
