Waters have broken at 28 weeks - we're in America!

I've come over to the US for a two week holiday to my partner's family. No problems at all in this pregnancy (my first). Then yesterday morning the waters broke! I've been admitted to a local hospital and although me and baby are fine we'll be here for the duration. It's likely to be three months! Baby could come any time between now and full term so we're keeping everything crossed (including my legs of course) it stays in as long as possible. Either way we're not able to fly home for a looong time...

Our baby will be coming back to the UK an American citizen - how about that? Shock Grin Confused

Pray the insurance works out for us!!

Still thinking of you southsea - keep us updated when you can. Everyone has their fingers crossed for you.

CrispyTheChristmasCracker · 02/01/2011 19:18

Jacksmama - we watched a programme on extreme airports. It was actually quite fascinating Blush. We did make it to midnight though!

Jacksmama · 02/01/2011 19:30

LOL Crispy - DH and I are such a pair of sad sacks, I don't think we've seen midnight on New Year's since I was pregant with DS on NYE 2007! :)

Jacksmama · 02/01/2011 19:30

*pregnant, even. Can't spell.

Mummy2Bookie · 02/01/2011 19:35

Whatever

WillbeanChariot · 02/01/2011 19:38

Still thinking of you too. I was really keen on a very natural delivery but as it happened a section was recommended to avoid putting my son through the stress of labour as he was so small. I am sad sometimes about that but really it was best for him. So I hope you hang in there for weeks yet and get a vaginal birth, but if not it's not the end of the world.

Eglu · 02/01/2011 19:38

Glad to see things are going okay so fay Southsea. The suggestion of an e-reader is a great idea. And I'm loving the journal. Lets hope we follow your story for a long time before this litte one makes an appearance.

cookielove · 02/01/2011 20:19

wow finally reached the end, its great to see you have such support, i have no experience in these things, however i do have duel nationality and i love it Grin congratulations and good luck in the future

DancingThroughLife · 02/01/2011 22:06

Hi Southsea, just wanted to add my support. I'm sorry I can't add anything constructive, but I hope your little bundle hangs on for a while yet and arrives safely when the time comes.

CardyMow · 02/01/2011 22:10

Glad everything is ok for now Southsea. I forgot to add that my DD was born at 34+5, was 6lb12oz (despite me being told she would only be 4-5lb), she only spent 24 hrs in SCBU, under a bililight for jaundice. She is now nearly 13yo! Here's hoping your little one can hang on in there.

gruber · 02/01/2011 22:23

Glad to hear you are doing well! Keep up the bed rest (dull and jard as it may be) we are all hoping little one stays tucked up for a good while yet.

natknickersinatwist · 02/01/2011 23:09

wow how scary for you!

wishing you all the best and fingers crossed that little monkey stays put! how naughty being excited to see mummy so soon! x

snorkie · 03/01/2011 00:59

Southsearocks, just seen this & want to wish you all the best. Dd waters broke early and in another country, but much less early and it was only Wales so far less daunting, though she did end up being born there, so could claim Welsh nationality if she ever wanted to (nowhere near as useful as US nationality!). Hang in there as long as you can...

beijingaling · 03/01/2011 03:07

That's good news about the monitoring. I think that in the US they are far more keen on CS especially if there is any concern about the health of the baby. As someone said here a while ago though - you are a goddess no matter how you bring your child into the world. Don't worry about that though now. Focus on relaxing and resting.

Is there anything you can do? Can you knit or sew or do cross words or something? Anything to help pass the time?

Want2bSupermum · 03/01/2011 03:38

I just found this post and I admire your courage. I am in NJ, about an hour from Philly but working all week with a CPA exam on Saturday.

I wouldn't worry too much about your health insurance. What it doesn't cover medicaid should. Your assets are outside of the US so you have little to worry about.

I would also tell the nurses that you have not attended any prenatal classes. My hospital here in New Jersey has an education team. My friends waters broke when she was 30 weeks and they gave her the classes bedside for the same cost ($150) as attending as part of a group plus they did a breastfeeding class for free.

LoveBeingADaddysGirl · 03/01/2011 04:06

Wow hope everything is going well. Haven't read all the thread (on my iphoone) but just wanted to say hello and hang in there. Hope dp's work have been ok. Can any of your family come over?

Merlion · 03/01/2011 04:22

Hope you and baby still hanging in there. I'm overseas on GMT+8 so happy to keep you company in the evening/night if you need it!

A friend of mine had her baby in Montenegro at 26 weeks and he's now a healthy happy 3 year old. Everything was covered by her insurance company and she and he were 'lucky' enough to get an air ambulance directly to GOSH on their return to the UK.

Also re antenatal classes I wouldn't worry too much. I had a VB with DS but have to say that everything pretty much went out of my mind (was induced so contractions got very intense very quickly) and when DH so much as suggested that I should be doing breathing as we were taught he got told to shut up in no uncertain terms.

findanewnamequick · 03/01/2011 05:29

Just popping my head in to see how you are, Southsea? I'm in the US so should be around in the evenings too.

If you're bored I have only 2 words for you: Angry Birds :)

goingroundthebend4 · 03/01/2011 06:25

Good luck I'm in uk but keep us hrs to more often than not and yes lol the reason is for a man

but turned out dd my waters had been going from 30 weeks had scan at 34 after I kicked up fuss she was born at 34+ 3

Yes we did time in scubu but though she's smaller than her friends academicly she is where she should be

fannybaws · 03/01/2011 13:20

Hi southsea I posted earlier on your thread and then yesterday my waters broke at 34 seeks. So I think I came out in sympathy! Hope you and your little one are doing ok today:)

Bryher · 03/01/2011 16:35

Hi Southsea - best of luck and sending positive vibes your way xxx

cherrysodalover · 03/01/2011 16:43

Wishing you well- we had our baby in a US hospital. They really know how to care for you and your baby and seem to actually care about you. I could not believe the difference from the nursing care i got in a london hospital-i know there are great UK nurses but here every nurse you encounter seems to genuinely care. I did not want to leave hospital after we had our son, like having your mum look after you!

Southsearocks · 03/01/2011 18:05

Hi everyone - we made it to 29 weeks today!! I'm so happy!

DP came in early today and was able to come and see another scan. There's a bit more fluid in there (5cm as opposed to less than 2cm the last time) but as expected the treatment is the same. However this doc advised us that once antibiotics stop, which is likely to be tomorrow after a 1 week course, infection is pretty much inevitable and will start labour or the need to be induced. So I'm re-evaluating my position and am going to take every day, and not every week, as a bonus now. He said some people do go to 34 weeks but that's the exception.

fannybaws - let us know how you get on!

I'm feeling really close to the baby again. I had started to have mixed feelings about it last week which worried me. Nothing serious or rejecting but little thoughts popping into my head and I found it hard to 'connect' with him/her. But today I feel totally excited again and am loving every little twitch and movement. I can feel more movement - is that what you'd expect at this stage? What else can I look forward to in week 29?

Today my mission is to drink a full large cup of water every hour (I'm not a big drinker so that's quite difficult for me) and get to 6am tomorrow with no unexpected events, no change in temperature or BP Smile

Right, that's my go on the laptop! Have to give it back now so DP can do some 'work' (i.e. play games Wink) xxx

Hi Southsearocks, I am watching this thread to keep in touch with how you are getting on. When I went into labour at 28 weeks the doctors told me that every day my dd stayed put would be a hugh bonus and help her tremendously. I got to 28+6. She is nearly 4 and is amazing. You'd never know she was born so early.

You sound like you are coping so well. Keep going! Smile

geordieminx · 03/01/2011 18:53

Lovely to hear from you southsea. Take it easy, rest as much as you can, because once your beautiful baby is here you won't get 5 minutes peace! Grin
