My dd was 9lb3oz, and after being told by numerous people that my bump is already huge (i'm only 16 weeks) and by a midwife that 'you wouldn't really want the baby to be any bigger than the first one' I'm starting to worry slightly about just how big this one is going to be! So I'm really just curious, how much bigger can second babies be if the first one was already pretty big...

DS1 was 9lb2, but DS2 was only 8lb13 (only?!)

DD (third) was a nice healthy 9lb10 though...

flowerfairy · 18/12/2010 14:39

Mmm. I'm watchingthis one to. DS was 9lb 2oz. Am 30 weeks and i know on most occasions that second child is often bigger, i'm slightly worried i might be having a monster sized baby. Though midwife never said anything the first time about ds being large. I think i look enormous now, though idwife has not made any comment about it appearing large. So i suppose it's in the lap of the gods as they say.

girlsyearapart · 18/12/2010 14:53

Dd1 born on due date 8lb5
Dd2 ten days early 9lb
Cue much panic and (negative ) gestational diabetes test dd3 was also ten days early and 8lb10

Summerfruit · 18/12/2010 14:56

dd1 was 9lb 15 and dd2 10lb 6

Rindercella · 18/12/2010 15:00

DD1 was 9lb9oz and 1 week early. DD2 was 9lb3oz and 2 days over. My bump with DD1 was HUGE! Far smaller with DD2.

faverolles · 18/12/2010 15:17

Ds was 9lb 14. Dd 8lb 5.
My sisters first was around the 8ish lb mark, her second 10 lb 7. The heavier one was her easiest birth by far, so I don't think it follows that you should be worried about a bigger baby.

missmehalia · 18/12/2010 15:23

Don't let the insensitive comments get to you. In this day and age, you'd think there would some more sophisticated device around to monitor foetal growth than a tape measure, but apparently not (Had DD a year ago, and had all the same things said to me!)

Only the midwife admitted afterwards that the consultants, etc, had got it wrong, and I've since heard this happening a lot.

1st DD: 9.5 lb. 2nd DD: 7.13 oz.

I was scanned, tested for GD, endlessly pressurised by all hospital staff about where/how to give birth. (They were all saying the 2nd would be huge.) They were all wrong. I just get big when I'm pregnant.

exexpat · 18/12/2010 15:25

DS - one day early, 4.05kg (about 9lbs 1?)
DD - nine days late, 4.1kg (about 9lbs 2?)

But a day or two before DD was born they told me she was going to be 4.5kg. Luckily not.

notheroldefashoinedbahHumbug · 18/12/2010 15:26

DS1 9lb 13 oz
DS2 9lb 11oz both emcs
DS3 a very teeny 7lb 6oz, hardly knew where he was!

good luck

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/12/2010 15:27

8lb 6
9lb 8
10lb (she came fastest and with least effort)

[saggy]

It's not an exact science though - you often look bugger with subsequent babies but it doesn't necessarily follow that they are bigger babies.

jellyhead188 · 18/12/2010 15:30

DS 5 days late 8lb10oz (much tearing and stitching required!)
DD 13 days early 6lb 15oz (no tearing at all!)

FWIW I looked tiny with both of mine!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/12/2010 15:41

Of course I mean't bigger lolol

Habbibu · 18/12/2010 15:50

pfft tio your mw. dd was 10lb 11oz - everyone thought next one would be a giant, but ds was a 9lb 1 tiddler.

superdragonmama · 18/12/2010 15:56

ds1 exactly 9lb (42 weeks)

dd bit bigger 10lb 10oz - eek! (42 weeks again)

but the biggie was ds2: a whopper 10lb 13oz (only 39 weeks, and thankfully, an elective caesarian, phew)

but despite fears of medics during the pregnancies, no diabetes or other problems - I had to do LOTS of pelvic floor exercises after the births though Wink

And they're all pretty average sizes now that they're bigger.

zonkin · 18/12/2010 15:58

DS1 9lbs7
DS2 7lbs exactly
DD1 7lbs exactly

Bump with DS2 was enormous. Bump with DD was small. Bump with DS1 was in between the two.

defineme · 18/12/2010 16:53

ds1 9 lbs 9 oz at 37 weeks
twins were 6lbs and 7lbs at 35 weeks(no special care neeeded cos of weight and feeding fine straight away)-glad I have my babies early cos I'd dread to think what weight they'd be full term (my grandad was 14lbs and great gran was never the same, but they'd deal with that better now than 96 years ago!!)

Don't you just look big cos your muscles are pre stretched with the 2nd?
Also isn't shoulder/head size more of a factor?

thisisyesterday · 18/12/2010 16:57

ds1- 9lb 1
ds2- 9lb 5
ds3- 9lb 15

my bump with ds1 was massive, with ds2 it was even bigger, with ds3 was my smallest bump of all 3

buttonmoon78 · 18/12/2010 17:07

DD1 was 8lb15 so not quite big enough for your list but I thought I add myself anyway as...
DD2 7lb 11.5
DS 7lb

So it doesn't always follow!

tlise · 18/12/2010 17:52

DS1 8lb 7
DS2 9lb 8 and half cue the "oh they get bigger"
DS3 6lb 14oz (and was overdue)
DD 7lb 8oz
DS4 (who they told me was going to be as big as DS2) 7lb 1oz.

DD was biggest bump. hence the old wives tale, if its in the belly call it nelly lol.

midori1999 · 18/12/2010 20:19

DS1 9lb at term

DS2 10lb at 38 weeks

DS3 6lb 14oz at 37 weeks (he does have Downs though and that's pretty big for a baby with downs at 37 weeks)

I didn't tear or have stitches with any of them and DS3 was a breeze compared to the others! Grin I much prefer big babies.

mehgalegs · 18/12/2010 20:23

DS1 10lb 10 (WINCE)
DS2 9lb (Popped out very fast)
DS3 10lb 15 (OUCH!)
DS4 9lb3 (cs)

I only do whoppers.

Have had a leetle repiar work done recently

LadyOfTheFlowers · 18/12/2010 20:25

DS1 9.9
DS2 10.12
DS3 8.12
DD 8.14

skinnymalinkylonglegs · 18/12/2010 20:30

phew! Seems like there's at least a chance that the second one will be smaller then. I've been starting to think of a 10lb+ baby - and after the amount of trouble I had with delivering dd, that didn't seem particularly appealing! I come from a family of big babies though - have an uncle who was 1 STONE Shock when he was born.

Have to say a 9lb 1 tiddler made me laugh!
