So I've been having indigestion/reflux/heartburn etc on and off the entire pregnancy and have been taking gaviscon for it which so far has helped (as well as little and often and milk and all the other things they say you should do). I'd say up until now it has been a daily inconvenience with times of being a complete nightmare, but never has it been so bad as now Xmas Sad

I'm 29 weeks and last night I was up half the night with constant burping/hiccoughing/general painful and odd noises coming up my throat and a feeling of indigestion that gaviscon did nothing to help. I ended out discovering that it was worse when I lay on my lhside and swapping to my rh side made it a bit better, so can only assume it's babies positioning at present (there was alot of movement going on in there yesterday).

Today has been equally bad and I've barely been able to eat anything in any quantity (just feels like there's no space so can only manage a few mouthfuls). I'm also still making loud painful gutteral contantly and in the past couple of hours or so have been getting a strong almost burning pain accross the very top of my ribs (along where the bottom of my bra is) and have had to resort to undoing my bra and moaning alot to DH Xmas Wink.

This is so painful and uncomfortable. Is this normal and just what I've got to look forward to over the next 2 - 3 months? Will it be constant or is it an on/off thing? If it is babies position is there anything I can do to try and wiggle her about in there?

Sorry for moan.

Thanks for all that. Have just spent half an hour sticking my bum in the air trying to move baby in the hope it helps. Quite a bit of low down kicks but nothing much else Xmas Confused

c4ro checked out that web site but don't really know enough about the movement feelings to feel able to work out position (have an anterior placenta so think everything to the outside is a bit cushioned).

lunatic so sorry about your past experience Xmas Shock. Sounds horrific. I can see how what I said would Xmas Angry and Xmas Confused you a bit . Hope everything was OK in the end.

To all the others it's sort of reassuring that others have felt this bad with indigestion. I have been expecting it to get bad tbh as I have bad IBS and often get bad digestion issues. Guess I thought it was bad before now...and now it's hit a whole new level of badness!

Have managed a small bowl of cornflakes after my meesly few mouthfuls of lunch so hope that goes down OK.

I'm afraid I have had pretty much what you describe throughout. The only thing that has helped has been ranitidine prescribed by the GP. It has a similar action to omeprazole mentioned above - it reduces production of stomach acid in a slightly different way. It is safe to take up to two tablets a day - but I just tend to take it when I really have to and it really works within a couple of hours. You can also buy it as Zantac over the counter - but it is half the strength of what you get as a prescription. I'm also not sure if a pharmacist would sell Zantac to a pg woman without it being prescribed.

Gaviscon unfotunately does FA for me either. Although sometimes taking Gaviscon ADVANCE immediately after each meal has a preventative effect. It is expensive though, and the stuff they prescribe is the cheap peptac, standard gaviscon copy which is rubbish Sad

The pain you can get with pre-eclampsia feels very similar to indigestion actually, in fact that's what my midwife misdiagnosed it as. However the burping and so on , means it is likely to be indigestion, but if the OP getsany other http://www.apec.org.uk/hellpsyndrome.htm PE signs ( headache, nausea, visual disturbances ( looked like sparkles when i got them) she should call her midwife asap

I had severe indigestion in both pregnancies and have been prescibed Omeprazole for this pg as I have HG and was very refluxy.

Have you got a lump in the middle of your ribcage (about 3 fingers width) from where your bra would sit? If it feels like there is something hard or sticking out (bit like a small golf ball) it could be a haitus hernia. I had one when pg with DS2 and the heartburn was terrible and I remember leaning over my trolley in Tesco with the pain.

They don't do anything until after you have delivered, if it's still there you can have surgery to push it back in, but they won't do this until after the baby is born. Mine resolved itself on delivery. Basically my guts went back to where they should be and stopped poking through ribcage. The joys of pregnancy eh?

I second the omniproze I am on that throughout my pregnancy as suffer so badly with indigestion, I keep forgetting to take it and boy am I suffering! Its def worth getting a prescription its safe in pregnancy and it really helps. I used to wake up retching with heartburn and never have it as long as I take it every day!

maltesermuncher · 06/12/2010 19:55

I have suffered from bad heartburn during both my pregnancies (currently 33 weeks with DC 2) so you have my sympathies Snowangels1. Please ask your midwife or GP for some antacids. Peptac liquid is much better than gavison IMO. I try and have a glass of milk before bed which usually helps.

Thanks so much all. Think I might try and ring my GP today/tomorrow and see what she says re: a stronger prescription, although, having said that, it is a little better this morning so maybe baby was just being PITA in the wrong position

grumblingalong can't feel any odd lumps, so hope I'm clear on that.
