6 days overdue and snowed in

I'm pooing myself! There is no way we could drive to the hospital in these conditions the roads are covered with thick snow,would an ambulance be able to get to me? dh work is 15 mins away but its took him just under 2 hours to get home tonight! i'm panicking big time at the min!!

OMG you poor thing!!! I would be shitting myself at 38 weeks in your position let alone overdue!!
I'm afraid no advice re: ambulance maybe just keep your legs tightly shut !!

There are stories locally (on t' Moors) of pregnant ladies being airlifted in to hospital in labour... (in the 60's!!)
Maybe ring your midwife and discuss what would happen if you were to go in to labour under these circumstances?

Is there anyone you could stay with that is a bit closer to a hospital? Just in case?

we live the closest to the hospital (about ten mins by car which includes going up a hill about 2 miles long and very steep with 5 sets of traffic lights so ALL hill starts) worst of it is i have ds who would be going to my mums who lives 20 mins in the opposite direction. Everytime i get a twinge i'm thinking "shit shit". Having a swee on thurs so will ask the mw then

I think this happened to a MNetter one winter in snow - was it last year maybe?

I think hiospitals have access to 4 wheel drive type vehicles or can draft in people like mountain rescue to get a paramedic and midwife out to you.

Do you have any complications that would make a home birth a no no?

Have you spokem to the midwife?

The ambulances were charging through the snow today.

The air ambulance could also be called- friends biggest regret is that she was panicking so much she didn't look at the view. Or bike paramedics.

You can also call the police who will escort you through and let you skip lights.

Don't panic. Your ds can go with you and mother meet you there.

Just stay calm.

i know i can see myself bringing on labour with sheer panic! I have no complications but never thought of a home birth... that means no epidural! arrgh!

Yes I am also panicking, 6 days over today. But I would rather have the baby at home and get on with it as I am so fed up!

Firstly just wanted to say that the amubulance will get to you if you call.

I'm due in Feb and this was something my partner asked at our first booking appointment.
To calm yourself why not have a bit of a read about preparing for home birth. You will have pretty much everything you need in either the kitchen or the bathroom and if your really having a good plan B it might help you stay calm.

I had an unplanned homebirth with DS in 2008 and it was lovely! It wasn't because of snow (it was snowing, but nothing like on this scale!), but because I hadn't realised how close to pushing I was.

Just wanted to add not to worry. The ambulances or alternative will sort you.

My little sister managed to get through the snow in an ambulance last night in the north east - it was tricky and she gave birth almost as soon as she got there but she got there! Her partner had to jump out and clear snow, push cars out of the way like but it all worked out in the end.

Thank you for the links, i'm gonna have a read about them. I suppose a home birth isnt too bad - except the no pain relief but as long as everybodys safe thats the main thing. I imagine i wont be having my sweep tomorrow (mw was suppose to come to my house). Just been to the shop for supplies and we only just made it (flat roads). Did a bit of panic buying and now have some big bags of malteasers, crisps, biscuits, cakes

Sorry no advice but would it make you feel better to know you're not alone? I'm also 40+6 and have no way of getting to hospital. My pil's are supposed to be looking after ds's when I'm in labour but their village is completely cut off. To make things worse, I was listening to local radio this morning and our hospital was calling for members of the public with 4x4's to help them get staff to work as hardly anyone had made it. Terrified to say the least!!!!

Hi Pinky, I'm in the same situation. I'm 8 days over and in all honesty it's like the north pole out there. I'm VBAC so was told homebirth out of the question. I wonder if I can change their minds?

We do have 2 local mountain rescue teams, if they should be needed.

Last year during the heavy snowfall, a midwife from one of the London hospitals walked...about 6 miles I think!...to get to a mother in labour who couldn't get to the hospital.

Don't worry, I'm sure it will work out, either at home or at hosp.

And you could go another week overdue by which time the weather will prob be better, but I bet you don't want that to happen!

i'm suppose to be induced on tuesday if the sweep tomorrow didnt work. God knows how we would get there but hopefully the weather should of improved. I texted my mw and asked about the sweep - she said depends on weather...i dont think i would want it in this weather incase it actually worked tbh!

If I was in your situation I would definitely ring the MW and talk it over with them.

There was a birth thread last year with a mumsnetter - stellamel - who was snowed in. The midwife made it to her with G+A and she had a home birth. All was well in the end and they even made the papers.

We were all on tenterhooks, wishing her well and hoping for the best.

It's hard but you know that worrying won't help just rember that women have been having babies for thousands of years and you come from a long line of very successful mothers.

So lots of confidence ladies as you waddle towards the finishing line.

pinkup that's just normal for being nearly, but not quite till the thaw, there.

Have you got a friendly neighbour to help with ds, people don't mind when it's like this outside.

And remember it's not the same as last timme, your body has done it all before so much easier

My neighbour is part of Mountain rescue. This morning, despite almost 2 foot of snow here, has already been out and taken a two week overdue and now in labour lady to the city maternity hospital. He and his colleagues have the big MR vehicles at their houses and are on call morning and night - and they can get through to you all.
