There's a book called 'the midwife' and it's about a 1950s midwife working in the east end of london - all true stories.

One of her stories is about going to a spanish woman in appalling snow and ice where there was no hope of getting her to hospital and no time for the medics to get to her. It was her 20th or 22nd baby Shock and baby was very premature (approx 26 weeks i think). She had a difficult labour and bled alot and no-one thought she or baby would survive and she refused to let anyone take the baby, shoved it down her cleavage and fed it a teaspoon of expressed milk every 30 mins! Both her and baby survived perfectly well! The medics arrived long after the event and found they were totally useless.

Call the Midwife? I read that. The story about that tiny, premature baby was incredible, wasn't it? She just fed it expressed milk off the end of a glass rod and it survived - in the 50's! I wonder if their dates were wrong? Grin
