Please does anyone have any tips advice? I woke up yesterday to terrible heartburn, had to get up out of bed because it was making me sick, takes my breath away sometimes and seems to be here constantly! I've been taking peptapic (sp) medicine from midwife but you can only take it 4 times a day - crap when you have it constantly :(

I've avoided fruit juices, fizzy pop, chocolate etc and i've been drinking milk but no help!!

I drank gallons of Gaviscon with DC3

Didn't bother with a spoon in the end, just swigged straight from the bottle Grin

Worked a bit. Funnily enough it seemed to pass by about 34w

Oh, forgot to add: try propping yourself up in bed to sleep. Keeps the acidy stuff down a bit and may help with reflux Smile

pinkyp · 03/11/2010 13:20

I was sat up in bed last night and it was killing still - i'm 37 weeks tomorrow and thought i'd been through the heartburn stage and passed it,bitching thing has come back!

I feel for you as gaviscon was the only thing that did it for me as from about 30 weeks I had heartburn pretty much constantly.

Like notnowbernard I used to swig it out of the bottle and disgusted DP with a bottle on my bedside table and waking up with a gaviscon moustache most days towards the endBlush

Midwives, the dr, my mum, in fact everyone told me it would pass when the baby engaged, but DD turned out to be an undiagnosed breech with her head rammed under my ribs and into my stomach so I had it right up till I gave birth!

Eat little and often, nothing too spicy, sit up in bed and I always found citrus fruits/juice seemed to make mine worse

glitterjo · 03/11/2010 13:40

oh not much advice, just tremendous sympathy - it's horrid! Peptac isn't doing a whole lot for me though it does seem to let me get a few hours at night without heartburn, at least. I always wake up at 4/5am with it again though.

I feel like I must have boosted the profits of whoever makes the chewable Rennies as I am now buying them in bulk. I can't sleep properly propped up and extra pillows just make my neck hurt. Won't miss this bit at all!

japhrimel · 03/11/2010 13:44

I'd stay off the milk too - anything cold or fat rich can trigger it.

Eat little and often, nothing spicy, acidic, very cold or very very hot. Eat slowly and sip room temp/warm flat drinks. And stay upright as much as possible.

DinosaurRumpus · 03/11/2010 13:49

I find that sipping plain hot water soothes my heartburn. My lovely grandmother suggested it and it seems to work - no idea why Confused

White Magnums! Loads of my friends swore by them.

pinkyp · 03/11/2010 14:11

I like the white magnums theory!

Afraid it is probably here to stay, until that baby is out!

You need to sleep sitting up, and get Gaviscon Advance Liquid (must be Advance) in large bottles on prescription.

Then swig from the bottle liberally. I was getting through a litre a week by the time DD made an appearance!

It's grim but you get used to it ...

Julezboo · 03/11/2010 21:03

I got tablets off the GP but I also alternate gaviscon, rennies and tesco indegstion remedy. I find if i stick to the one thing it gradually stops working.

HTH, not long left for you though :) 37 is full term, you will have baby soon and heartburn will be a distant memory.

Im only 26 weeks so hav ea fair way to go yet!

ilovecorey · 03/11/2010 21:05

i have this so bad im early in my maybe pregnancy :D havent tested yet but it actually feels like my chest is splitting or something heavy is sitting on my chest :'(

Paribus · 03/11/2010 23:48

well, i remember reading somewhere that drinking cold milk straight from the bottle (don't ask me why) helps- and it really did wonders for me. gaviscon is also good, although taste is nasty.

Needaname · 04/11/2010 07:32

I've swapped water for milk and that's helping a lot. Gaviscon and lots of it.

Hopefully your bump will drop a bit soon and that wil relieve pressure on your stomach.

Lizzzombie · 04/11/2010 07:36

I've heartburn the whole way through this pregnancy.
Am on prescription Gaviscon Advance and also prescription drugs from the GP. Ranitidine. If I miss even one dose of the Ranitidine it comes back with a vengence.

Its evil.

I personally find eating a small dinner and as early as possible can help a bit. But also, my own personal remedy is fizzy water. It sort of makes me burp it up before it gets too painful. If that makes sense? (gross I know!)

I am 37.5 and can't wait for this baby to come out as I am SOOOOOO hungry from not eating alot due to heartburn. The other night, I actually got heartburn from my gaviscon. How ridiculous!

I sleep with a bean bag behind my pillows to prop me up. But it usually passes by 1am.

I am going to stuff myself silly after I've given birth!

Lizzzombie · 04/11/2010 07:37

Also, I have a small bottle of gaviscon in my handbag to swig from if I am out and about. (so classsy)

marriednotdead · 04/11/2010 08:06

Despite having a milk craving with DS, the heartburn kicked in around 16 weeks and stayed till the bitter end.

Couldn't stand the taste of Gaviscon so demolished Rennies (packs of 96) every few days. We just used to call him the Rennie monster Smile

And of course, the old wives tale about heartburn being the sign that you would have a monkey hairy baby was true.

Chandon · 04/11/2010 08:17

ranitidine, you can buy it at supermarkets it is called zantec and is magic.

Stay clear of fried foods, breads(yeast can cause heartburn)and dairy.

eat light foods, eg steamed fish, some boiled or stirfried veggies like beans, and boiled potatoes or rice.

only dairy that is o.k. is yoghurt.

I`m the heartburn pro, oh yes, sadly I am

Chandon · 04/11/2010 08:18

plain hot water does help too

Lizzzombie · 04/11/2010 09:22

Try and think positive though.
At least you won't overindulge during your pregnancy and you may even leave the hospital in your normal clothes!
Wink maybe these celebrity Mums all just have really bad heartburn and they don't just starve themselves as soon as they give birth?!

pinkyp · 04/11/2010 10:42

I wish, lol.I just stuff my face then suffer after :( i want orange juice!!!! it'll kill me tho...

Are you sure it is heartburn?

Epigastric pain presents itself very similarly to heartburn. The fact that gaviscon/medicine isn't doing anything & you are feeling sick concern me.

Lizzzombie · 04/11/2010 11:35

pinkyp I swear as soon as I've had this baby I am going to down a litre of Tropicana! I am craving it, but gave into a glass the other day and thought I was going to die for about 2 hours later! It was akin to necking a vat of battery acid. I felt so sick afterwards!

pinkyp · 04/11/2010 16:37

I'll have a look at epigastric pain - not sure what that is, its wierd had loads of heartburn this morning, had a beef sandwhich felt sick for ages but the heartburn went. Was visiting a relative in hospital and gave into the urge and had a can of britvic pure orange...no heartburn as yet Hmm
