Really need a haircut, felt so exhausted the poast few weeks its been low on my list of priorities.

But it's reached the point of no return now with bts not even GHDs can control.

I am due tomorrow and the earliest I can have it done is Tuesday.

I know it could be a disatster (halfway through and my waters go!) but I'm sure I read that after birth you are not meant to get your hair cut due to baby reconsigning you or something.

So what would you do? Deal with the worst hair ever after birth or take the risk?

If you makes you feel better I don't see why not. Even if you did go into labour during it wouldn't reaaly matter would it? I would take a friend or DP who can drive tho.

However, hormones can make a lot of your hair fall out just after birth so it won't last long.

Meglet · 31/10/2010 14:43

I would. Just a trim though. Not a 4 hour epic hair colouring session!

Of course I'd go! You need something to look forward to at that point, you'll get fussed over mightily and may even get an extra pamper or treat.

Labour doesn't come on that fast, btw, you're more likely to start occasional ctx, waddle up to the hairdresser, chat for a while as they trim away, all the while wandering if you should phone MW, go home, waddle around the house an hour or 2, phone your MW, phone your birth partner and your Mom to say something might be up, have tea, not actually get to the toe-curling stage until 10pm at night when you finally go to hospital and the baby will come around 3am.

LadyFantastic · 31/10/2010 14:48

yes go for it. is there a DP who will bring baby bag if needed?

New babies can't see very much - I reckon they recognise you by smell (especially if you're breastfeeding) than anything else. Go and get it cut. I had mine cut and went into labour two hours later Grin

MumNWLondon · 31/10/2010 14:51

??? have never heard of not getting it cut afterwards, but i would get your haircut before because it might be harder to leave the house afterwards, esp if you have CS or stitches.

If you think that you are in labour before you are due to leave the house then call and cancel.

If this is your first baby, even in the really really unlikely event your waters go during the haircut, it would be several hours before you were in proper labour so it wouldn't matter. My DS2 (DC3) is now 6 months, the day I was in (early) labour with him I went to the gym (swimming), to the supermarket, picked up kids from school. Never occured to me not to. DH was at work. Had a mild contraction every 10 mins or so.

EauRouge · 31/10/2010 14:52

Yes, go for it! It'll be nice to get some pampering. I went to the pub quiz when I was 3 days overdue Grin You do get a fair bit of warning, watch out for period-like pains and general achiness.

I remember reading something about babies recognising different people from their hairline but the main way your baby will know you is from your sense of smell. A hairband or different style won't fool them! Good luck with everything.

memoo · 31/10/2010 14:54

Look at it this way, if the worst happens and you give birth in the hairdressers, you might get free haircuts for a year or something.

I was always quite gutted that my waters never went in B&Q or Sainsburys.

breatheslowly · 31/10/2010 15:12

I had a pedicure at 2 days overdue. I just had to promise my beautician that I would name the baby after her if my waters went. Go for it.

PacificWerewolf · 31/10/2010 15:16

Of course you can have your hair cut after having given birth , however it will make you feel better to have it done now, go for it! And you'll look as good as is possible after delivery in the first photos Wink.
It may also ensure that you will not go too much overdue: the same principle as wearing your most expensive knickers will guarantee a show Grin.
Good luck!

HouseOfBamboo · 31/10/2010 15:25

I had one at 8 days overdue. The hairdresser's look of alarm when she asked when I was due and I said 'about a week ago' was quite funny.

Sadly the haircut didn't bring on labour.

Oh and not everyone's waters flood out as they go into labour, that's another myth, so you don't need to worry too much about making a mess.

bytheMoonlight · 31/10/2010 15:27

You've convinced me to book!

With dd though my waters went about 7 hours before my first contraction, what if that happens again and I'm sat in the chair when my waters go?

How would you feel if you were the hairdresser and your clients waters went, would you be ok to carry on cutting?

I really like my hairdresser and don't want to make things difficult for her

While I'm on about it though, I could get my eyebrows threaded on one of those stalls in the local shopping centre while I'm out, or is that a step too far?

PavlovtheWitchesCat · 31/10/2010 15:37

i got my hair cut at 5 days over due. Sort of wanted to 'test' the theory of it happening at the most inconvenient time! I fgured that even if i went into labour, i would still have half hour between first lot of contractions to get cut finished! I decided however, in reflection to decline the massage chair while having my hair washed. Grin

DS arrived 10 days late.

CheeseandGherkins · 31/10/2010 15:41

Why can't you get your hair cut afterwards? Sounds odd to me...

PacificWerewolf · 31/10/2010 15:47

Personally, I would (and have) get (got) everything on the grooming/beautification front done before the darling child makes an entrance into this world, as I seem to be only able to have limpet babies that are totally and utterly unputdownable for...ooooh, about 6 months or so. So go for it Grin!

Miffster · 31/10/2010 15:48

yeah, what is this strange superstition about not getting glammed up before or after a birth? Can someone explain? Are you not meant to get hair cut before or after the baby??? I am [hconfused]

HouseOfBamboo · 31/10/2010 15:54

I presume the one about not having hair done soon after the birth is so as not to confuse the baby if the hairstyle is radically different? Am not convinced really, as someone else said, newborns can't see all that well anyway.

It might be true when they are slightly older (say a few months old) and you went from peroxide blonde to goth black. That might confuse them a bit.

Miffster · 31/10/2010 16:11

Well, babies who have hijab or nicqab-wearing mums seem to manage (mum has hair down/up/loose/scarfed at home and then covered when out.

And babies whose mums wear specs...

Surely babies go by other clues like smell, voice, touch etc?

I suppose the not havign hair cut when due is a sod's law thing, like lighting a fag makes the bus finally turn up?

NurseSunshine · 31/10/2010 16:37

Wow ragged labour sounds lovely and easy, I'm really looking forward to it now [hgrin]

Babies can only see black and white really in the first week or so can't they? The only problem would be how would you get to the hairdressers with a 4 day old baby?!

sotough · 31/10/2010 17:08

life doesn't stop instantly just because you've reached a notional 'due date' ! i had all sorts of fun after my due date - went to the cinema, walks round the park, shopping etc. which was just as well or i'd have been sitting around for ten days. no point pottering round the house 24/7 waiting for things to happen; you'll go mad. make the most of the time you've got left to make yourself look more beautiful!

FindingMymOOOOOOOOjo · 31/10/2010 17:19

of course I would. enjoy.
chances are even if you did start early labour at the hairdressers, it would be hours or days before you went into labour suite anyway.

At 6 days over I spent the day (mid-November) in a deserted Kew Gardens wandering all around & felt fine about it - I had phone charged! Went into labour the enxt day so think long walk did me good.

sungirltan · 31/10/2010 18:01

get it done you will regret it afterwards - unless you have a perfect mechanical baby which sleeps on cue/a dh at your beck and call 24/7.

actually if you know your hairdresser quite swell you could ask if she might come and see you at home
