Is it quite normal to start experiencing problems with going for a poo so early on? I am only 5+4, but my god it's difficult and uncomfortable at times. Sorry if TMI.

Im not sure but I've only recently started having these probs and Im 22 weeks. Only lasted a few days though as I drank prune juice and ramped up my liquid intake which did the world of good!

Maybe look at your diet and water intake...see if there are any changes you can make. Hopefully that should help!

You need to drink lots - the softer it is, the easier it will come out! and if you eat more fibre, you will also need to increase the fluids again to help them out again!

i just came onto the forum tonight to sing the praises of the wonder of PRUNE JUICE. seriously i have been bunged up for over a week at a time & finally spoke with the midwife who recommended it and tonight(sorry if this is too much info!!)i felt like i had given birth in a strange way! it has left me feeling sooo relaxed and relieved for the first time in 5 months!(24 weeks)
please try it with some fresh fruit & water if you can.its the best remedy &the juice has a lot of vits for you.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. Am off to buy lots of bottles of water, prune juice and fibre today. Fingers crossed it does
The job cos I can't cope with this for much longer. I just hope my poor husband isn't around when it all starts to work!! :o

You can get Isabgol in the Indian shop; it's excellent and sorts you out really quickly ;-)

LDNlady · 17/10/2010 14:54

Isabgol? What's that then? I've just returned from the shop with prunes, apricots, prune juice and weetabix so fingers crossed we'll have some kind of relief within the next 24 hours or before!! :)

how is prune juice sold? in tins, or in cartons with the other fruit juices?
i never had this problem in my first pregnancy but this time round it's pretty bad - i go three days or so without being able to go. i tried fybrogel sachets and they don't work for me. i drink loads of water. all to no avail.

DuelingFanjo · 17/10/2010 17:12

I agree with valentinemum10.

My tip is half a glass of prune juice mixed with boiled water.

sotough you can get prune juce in most supermarkets with all the other cartoned juice or there are also tins of prunes in juce or prunes in foil bags.

Cyclebump · 18/10/2010 14:09

Say hello to Fybogel....

I had this problem before I even knew I was pregnant and although it got better at about 11 weeks, it made me feel really ill.

If Fybogel won't do it ask your GP as there are laxatives that are safe in pregnancy.

Good lord, I hope you stocked up on toilet paper as well...

FindingMyMojo · 18/10/2010 15:44

Probitic caps (not drinks) do it for me! Get them from a good health food shop.

seashore · 18/10/2010 15:48

Eat a kiwi fruit with the skin on first thing in the morning, it will push everything on through Smile pears are great too and loads and loads of water.

Teasie · 18/10/2010 15:52

Isabgol is psyllium husk and you soak 1 tablespoon of in in sweetened yoghurt or fruit juice for about ten minutes. Then you eat with a spoon; it's supposed to swell up. My DH thinks it's disgusting but then he introduced me to it! It's also gentle. I find dried apricots, in small quantities, really effective as well. Good luck Grin

bessie26 · 18/10/2010 22:39

seashore - eating a hairy kiwi fruit? ugh!! Shock

seashore · 19/10/2010 14:04

It works! and it doesn't taste bad at all! easy peasy when you are desperate for a poo!!! Smile

vmcd28 · 19/10/2010 15:07

Lactulose is my saviour. I am 35 weeks, and had thrombosed hemorrhoids a few weeks ago, I NEVER want to go through that pain again. Anyway, three spoons of lactulose morning and night has made me go once a day (which i've never ever done before...!). And what a relief.

RoxieP · 19/10/2010 15:14

Don't get me started - I have been constipated from the word go. It is the pregnancy hormones, I think progesterone, that impedes the smooth muscle that pushes everything along so you can get it right from the start. That's also the reason you get UTIs (urine flow slows) and heartburn (oesophageal sphincter relaxes allowing acid to reflux). Obviously as you get futher along you have the added problem of this big thing in your abdomen providing further obstruction...

SarahJinx · 19/10/2010 19:02

Me too, constipated before I found out and now 13 weeks in it's worse than ever! Am taking Sennakot which helps a bit, lots of jacket potatoes and oranges too.

It's super horrid though and can be really painful.

JBrd · 19/10/2010 19:22

I found that linseeds are really good - 1-2 teaspoons per day sprinkled into your cereal or over a salad definitively help!

RoxieP · 22/10/2010 14:58

My new trick - I have one strong cup of coffee (real stuff) in the morning and then drink decaff for the rest of the day (tea AND coffee) so you don't go over your caffeine allowance. It gets everything "moving" It is the ONLY thing that works for me, and now I believe that cutting out the caffeine may be part of the reason my constipation got worse after I was pregnant! Thing is the coffee sometimes sets off my heartburn - you can't win 'em all!

valentinemum10 · 22/10/2010 22:19

I agree RoxieP. I always had a latte first thing in the morning&it kept things moving. But i cant drink it while preggers as it makes me vomit & how i lust after a lovely frothy, steaming, sweet, hot&cinnamony latte!!every day!decaff just isnt the same &on top of that i seem to have become lactose intolerant :(

but just to return to my last suggestion- PRUNE JUICE is magic. it works QUICKLY&effective & its good for you.

busybee20 · 22/10/2010 22:43

Fybogel is really good, you can buy from the pharmacy. Its got isphagul in it and has a nice orange taste to it. Good Luck.

expectingno3 · 23/10/2010 11:50

Have had exactly the same problem. If you can stomach them, nibbling 4 or 5 dried apricots a day works, as do a few chopped up prunes (I have them on my porridge and they're quite tasty actually!)
