I always thought I would be curious what it tasted like but today a bit of white stuff appeared on my nipple (as opposed the the usual clear stuff - I am 30 weeks by the way) and all I could think was urggh!

OP posts:

I tasted it and so did DH when I had my DD. It tastes quite sweet but neither of us wanted to repeat the experience!

sarahscot · 06/10/2010 20:30

I did when I had DS1, agree it tastes sweet and is thinner than cow's milk.

nagoo · 06/10/2010 21:04

When it's only a bit coming out it's a bit freaky. Once your baby is here you'll definitely start to identify it as 'milk'. Then it's not so weird to think about tasting it. And it's quite nice.

SKYTVADDICT · 06/10/2010 21:06

Plenty, every time I shook the expressed bottle of it on to my arm to test the temperature. I licked it off.

WowOoo · 06/10/2010 21:08

I did and thought it had a plastic yuk aftertaste and felt a bit bemused and slighty queasy...

I have smelt it lots - garlic and curry flavours really come through Smile poor baby.

FetchezLaVache · 06/10/2010 21:14

I thought I would, but I find I really can't bring myself to! There was a poster on here whose name was something like "BreastMilkDoesAGreatLatte" and I've been intrigued to try this out for myself, but I just can't do it. Have tried to get DH to taste it, but he won't either. What wimps!

Wholelottalove · 06/10/2010 21:36

Yes, I did once when I was expressing for DD. Couldn't persuade DH to taste it though. It tasted sweet and watery IIRC.

StrangewaysHereICome · 06/10/2010 22:35

Yes - definitely quite sweet.

Meglet · 06/10/2010 22:37

Yes, it was very sweet and sticky.

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 06/10/2010 22:38

yes I did, quite nice. lovely to know that I'm making something so nutritious :)

Pacermint · 06/10/2010 22:44

I've tasted mine. Definitely much sweeter than cows' milk.

I haven't been able to persuade dh to taste it. He loves that I breast feed but he gets very weirded out by the sight of my expressed milk. No way will he taste it.

mrsgordonfreeman · 06/10/2010 22:48

It's like watered down condensed milk. If I thought it was icky I wouldn't give it to my baby!

The plasticky taste is from the bottle and teats. I found a glass bottle and silicon teats prevented it, back when dd was cooperative and drank from bottles.

KickArseQueen · 06/10/2010 22:52

Yes, of course :) I'm a bit Confused why people percieve it all ok to drink milk from a stinking great cow but get weirded out by human milk.

You can make yogurt etc out of it, but do any of us really have time???

Is it a bodily fluids thing? are these blokes who are freaked by BM just generally squeemish? genuinely intrigued...

PrivetDancer · 06/10/2010 22:57

I licked the drips off my wrist after temp testing it, yes. Watery as other people said.
Dh refused to try it, but then he also refused to do the same with formula too. I think he's a bit weird.

Mammie81 · 06/10/2010 22:59

We made a cup of tea with my friends milk once. It doesnt go well with tea - very watery and fatty. Confused

I totally would.

PrivetDancer · 06/10/2010 23:03

I am a bit squeamish seeing it actually come out of the nipples, I must say! Especially watching it when expressing, although it's also fascinating.

So yes, OP, with you on the urgh a bit. Expect your baby will disagree though :)

spiderlight · 06/10/2010 23:07

Yep, several times - finished the dregs of expressed bottles that DS didn't want because there was no way I was wasting even a drop of it after the trouble I had with pumping. It was quite nice, actually!

KickArseQueen · 06/10/2010 23:12

SLM Me too! Grin

WowOoo · 07/10/2010 01:33

Mrsgordon - the odd plastic aftertaste was not from any bottles or teats.

I didn't get round to expressing that much but amazing differences in fat content, colour etc. Sometimes blue ish after lots of green veg.

Blue breast milk with a plastic taste. It's not the toddler putting odd things in mouth I need to worry about!

KristinaM · 07/10/2010 01:49

I agree, its exactly like watered down condensed milk

I cannot understand why people thinks it's weird but ok to use dairy products

sarahbuff · 07/10/2010 09:21

Another interesting question for everyone, did anyone else who has tasted their breastmilk also tasted formula? Formula tastes/smells horrible! I felt sorry for my son that he had to had formula for a few months whilst I was pregnant with DS2! :)

pommedeterre · 07/10/2010 09:25

My bm tasted liked very sugary water with a bit of milk in it. I have tasted everything I've given dd so I think that formulas aren't as nice but that the smell is much much worse than the taste. Cow and Gate is very sweet and Aptamil more cheese tasting.
I expressed a lot and it used to almost yellow in the morning and very pale blue int he evening.

mrsgordonfreeman · 07/10/2010 12:31

I was surprised to find that a lot of people don't taste formula and shuddered at the thought.

Wysoy, for the record, is quite nice. Tastes like Carnation coffee creamer.

Actually, there does seem to be a bit of revulsion around baby foods, a friend of mine made a face when I asked her what the stuff in jars tasted like, and I remember a colleague being disgusted with me when I ate some Farley's rusks at work. I think they're delicious! Not for babies, obviously, but they are yummy.

I mean, it's not cat food (which I've also tried, btw)...
