I'm in shock and have been all day!

My friend went to work yesterday, but left early in the afternoon as she had bad stomach pains. Little did she know that she was in labour!

I've always found it VERY difficult to understand how someone doesn't realise that they're pregnant, but she's an intelligent woman.

The baby's in special care and she's worried as she's been on high-strength painkillers for back ache (which we now realise was pregnancy-related!) She's also been drinking throughout the pregnancy. :(

I don't know how many weeks the pregnancy was, but the little boy should be ok.

Shock

I've heard of these things happening before.

how scary for her, is it her first?

wishing her and baby all the best x

bluebump · 23/09/2010 20:26

This happened to my friend, she thought she had food poisoning but was actually in labour. Her little girl was born perfectly healthy despite her not know she'd been pregnant. To top it off she was skinnier than my old size 12 me the entire time she was pregnant Envy Grin

It happened to another girl in our town and she was on the local news, apparently she thought she had IBS.

jinglesticks · 23/09/2010 20:30

I was playing tennis with a woman who was complaining of terrible backache... She went to the doctors afterwards only to discover she was in labour. She did not look pregnant at all - and she is pretty thin. baby was prem but fine. She said she ahdn't had any sympoms at all.

BertieBotts · 23/09/2010 20:31

Oh, wow! Good luck and congratulations to your friend :)

5inthebed · 23/09/2010 20:32

How far on in her pregnancy do they think she was?

When I was at school a girl gave birth in the toilets, not knowing she was even pregnant.

MmeLindt · 23/09/2010 20:33

Ooh, how scary for your friend. Hope she and baby are fine.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2010 20:35

Oh goodness me. What a shock.

Happened to a girl I was at uni with. Bright, switched on, skinny woman in a stable and loving relationship (she was 28 I think). Went home for the easter break, came back and we were told she'd had a baby on Easter Sunday. She had no idea.

She came back in the September and told us all about it. She had normal periods, no weight gain, no symptoms. Would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it. She was tiny.

Gigantaur · 23/09/2010 20:36

Wow.

She must be so confused right now. I am sure she is beating herself up in so many ways right now. I cannot even begin to list the amount of emotions she must be reeling through.

I hope she and baby are both ok.

narmada · 23/09/2010 21:24

My god. I was thinking about this only the other day, wondering how on earth it could happen - as my 37 weeker whirled and punched me internally. I guess it must mean that some women never feel any fetal movements? Are there any women on here who have been pregnant, knowingly, and never ever felt any recognisable movement??? Just wondering..

Best of luck to your friend - hope everything turns out OK for her and her little one. Keep us updated!

skidoodly · 23/09/2010 21:26

That must be so tough to get your head around. I found that difficult enough and I'd had 8 months to come around to the idea.

JaynieB · 23/09/2010 21:29

It does happen - a woman I worked with came in and said her sister had just found out she was pregnant and due in about 2 weeks. She'd gone to the GP with severe pain in her ribs - it was her babys feet! She'd always had irregular periods so it hadn't been unusual to miss a few, hadn't gained much weight and the baby had been lying in an odd way (hence the rib pain) which meant she hadn't shown. Huge shock for her, she wasn't married or even with the babys father and was totally unprepared.
Baby was fine though.

LoveBeingInvitedToTheVIPSale · 23/09/2010 21:31

I know someone who didnt find out till there were about 7 months gone.

expatinscotland · 23/09/2010 21:32

It can happen.

Very famous case in the US earlier this year.

Couple had 3 children the husband had had a vasectomy for six years.

They were both on the large side, and she kept having light, but regular periods.

His 999 call was legend.

She had a 4th baby in the bath tub at home.

A urological exam revealed his vas deferns on one side had re-attached.

When I was working in a large county hospital in the US, we had a lady come into the ER and give birth.

She had been on Depo and had 3 jabs of it. The OBs figured she must have ovulated the day before or the day she had it and conceived.

Her 5th was healthy and fine! But she came back to the women's clinic and had herself sterilised soon thereafter.

Hedgeblunder · 23/09/2010 21:36

Wow! I girl I work with phoned up one day to say she shan't be coming in because she had just found out she was 8months gone, again smart lady and only a size 12!

DetectivePotato · 23/09/2010 21:40

It happened to my mum with me. She was still in size 10 trousers apparently. Even the doctor thought she was initially having a MC, but a 7lbs baby came out.

She fucked off though so not exactly a happy ending. Sad

expatinscotland · 23/09/2010 21:41

My gran was 6 months along when she found out. She was 47 and thought she was starting menopause.

NonnoMum · 23/09/2010 21:48

For those of you who haven't got Sky - Discovery Home and Health "I didn't know I was pregnant".

My FAVOURITE programme. Love the stories and also love it's not me giving birth in the loos at work...

(Pretty damn scary though - suppose they only show the stories with happy endings...)

ChooksAway · 23/09/2010 22:04

Narmada - a friend didn't feel any movements at all with her second.
Was very scary for her, and from about 28 weeks, she had to see the mw every day so they could have a listen in to make sure the baby was ok.

narmada · 23/09/2010 22:07

Wow, was the baby OK in the end, chooksaway? I guess sometimes they just lie in an awkward position.

Floopy21 · 23/09/2010 22:20

That's exactly what I was thinking Narmada, surely you can feel the movements?

KaraStarbuckThrace · 23/09/2010 22:28

Colleague of mine didn't know she was pg with her first. Scary thing was she worked in a lab handling hazardous chemicals and was climbing up and down tankers all day long Shock
She was rushed to hospital with suspected appandicitis and came out with a baby girl. Who I believe is a lively 12yo now :)

Samraves · 24/09/2010 08:56

Oh my god - I have been aware of being pregnant pretty much everyday because of feeling so shit, and growing sooo much etc - I just can't believe how that is possible!

mollycuddles · 24/09/2010 09:05

Is it wrong that I wish I could have the sort of pg where I could even get to 8 weeks without knowing? Last time I had nausea from 5 weeks with wretching in the shower and vomiting from 6 weeks until 30 mins before delivery.

arsesandoldlace · 24/09/2010 09:59

I was thinking the same thing mollycuddles, wouldn't it be nice to be blissfully unaware for the first 6 months? Pregnancy wouldn't seem such a drag if you only had 3 months to wait...
