I'm in shock and have been all day!

My friend went to work yesterday, but left early in the afternoon as she had bad stomach pains. Little did she know that she was in labour!

I've always found it VERY difficult to understand how someone doesn't realise that they're pregnant, but she's an intelligent woman.

The baby's in special care and she's worried as she's been on high-strength painkillers for back ache (which we now realise was pregnancy-related!) She's also been drinking throughout the pregnancy. :(

I don't know how many weeks the pregnancy was, but the little boy should be ok.

Apparently my mum felt very little with my sister. Only realised she had not felt much at all during her pg when i came along and kicked her to pieces Grin

Katz · 24/09/2010 10:08

noonomum - i love that programme!

Happened to my aunt back in the 70s. Continued having light but regular periods throughout, no other obvious symptoms. Went to doctor because of swollen ankles and found out she was pregnant - had my cousin 2 weeks later. All very embarrassing for her, I understand, because she'd only been married for two months. SCANDAL! Shock

Mammie81 · 24/09/2010 19:40

Its happened twice to my Aunts sister. Once when she was very young, baby born in the bathroom.

And the second time my uncle heard her crying in the kitchen in the middle of the night and ended up helping to deliver the baby.

Its not that unusual, Eastenders has even covered it!

hi ladys it does happen will cut along story short ,i did not know i was pg my mum found me in my room having a fit rushed to hosp found out i was 32 wks had a em cs my mum nearly lost me and my son hes now 20 years old

mollyroger · 24/09/2010 20:08

in the same way that some women have pain-free labours, I suppose it must happen.
but my pgs were not planned yet I knew within days that I was pg...I felt so odd.
And then the movements! Dear lord, one used to react to me typing and kick, HARD as I tappy tapped on keyboard.

Must be very hard to adapt to suddenly becoming a mother!

CommonSenseSuze · 24/09/2010 20:17

Wow! What a lot of amazing stories!

Brief update: my friend's little boy is a few weeks premature; is in Special Care, but is doing well.

She and her fiance are still in shock, but are "Proud Parents" now, so they're doing fine.

She's is a temp and so isn't entitled to any maternity leave; and he's in a very low paid job. They're fairly young and don't have any savings. Fortunately I have a car boot load of baby stuff to take to them and I've been freecycling like mad to get moses basket and pram etc. :)

Congratulations to your friend! I never believed these stories until the builder who did our bathroom recently told us all about how it had happened to his girlfriend last year, who he swore blind was thinner than me (I'm a 10 / 12). She had a healthy 7 pounder, and similar to others, turned up in A&E with excrutiating stomach pains only to be told she was in labour (and the baby was incredibly full term). Apparently she was on the pill and had been having periods. And it was her second baby, so you'd thihk she knew what pregnancy felt like! She had also been smoking and drinking (sometimes quite a bit) throughout the pregnancy, and in fact social services got onto them.

The baby is apparently now perfectly fine and no social services involvement once they realised our builder & girlfriend were decent parents who really didn't realise about the pregnancy.

There was absolutely no mistaking me at 9 months pregnant...

Claire2301 · 24/09/2010 20:42

I was a surprise baby and what they suspect was full term (nails, loads of hair and a tooth! 6lb9). Mum put on a little weight but was size 12-14. Woke up one morning with upset stomach, hour later I was born into the toilet. She was the first person to tip the ambulance driver through shock! Strangest thing is with my 9lb12 sister she practically filled a doorway. Complete opposites.

CommonSense -are you in the south (if you need babystuff) Boy or girl?

BertieBotts · 24/09/2010 23:37

I've got some clothes I'm happy to pass on too if you're anywhere in Warwickshire. Can't offer anything more I'm afraid as I left it all behind when we left XP!

MrsRhettButler · 24/09/2010 23:42

Envy i've always wanted one of those pregnancies!

frankenfanny · 24/09/2010 23:58

I would find it hard to believe, too, especially as I look like a hippo from about 3m pg. But it happened to a friend of mine, who was told by the midwives they get a couple every month!

duchesse · 25/09/2010 00:15

Me too, MrsButler. Especially if the child was healthy at the end of it all. Less likely at my age now though...

Scorpette · 26/09/2010 01:01

My friend was a surprise baby - her mother was HAVING HER PERIOD when she felt like she wanted to have diarrhoea. Went to the loo, felt like she was actually constipated, grunted a bit, baby came out after a few mins. She was a size 10 and hadn't put an ounce on and had had normal periods every month (like on that day)! Slightly awkward ending: she and her husband had never wanted kids and although they loved my friend (the mother is now dead), she grew up feeling weird about herself and now hates babies and never wants one herself Sad

My cousin's daughter got to 7 months without realising she was pg, although she is a big girl and thought the odd pain here and there and weight gain were just down to eating crap.

Wish I didn't have any symptoms (currently unable to lie down to sleep due to severe nausea)!

ChooksAway · 26/09/2010 09:51

Commonsensesuze - I don't know all the ins and outs of maternity leave and pay, but if you google Maternity Allowance and look at the direct.gov site, she may be entitled to something!
Or ring CAB or the job centre.

Katz · 26/09/2010 15:49

comonsense you might want to show them this link although at this price it may well sell out quickly, but tesco on line have a hauck travel system for £49.99 here

happywheezer · 26/09/2010 17:39

Perhaps it's me but I know four women who have been pregnant and didn't know it.
Perhaps I know stupid women!
My friend was 39 weeks when she found out, she was getting a bit fat, so her mum sent her to Dr's only to be told that she was very far along, went to hospital where she was confirmed as 39 weeks had baby following week.
Another had a lump went to the dr told it was a foot. Was 38 weeks.

Crystylline · 26/09/2010 20:17

i just found out i was pregnant this week and i'm 23 weeks.

it's scary - still had periods, no morning sickness.

Only had back pain (normal) and tiredness (also normal).

now feeling totally blown away and scared.

finances and being single are going to be huge issues, as is moving house (no babies allowed here).

But, somewhere underneath it all, i'm excited.

HumphreyCobbler · 26/09/2010 20:23

Goodness me. Congratulations! You will get more excited as you get more used to the idea.

Best of luck with all the things that need sorting out.

Purplebuns · 26/09/2010 20:26

Congratulations Crystylline! :)
