Pain in pelvis?

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 07:50

I am 26+6 weeks pg and have started to have pretty bad pain on my pubic bone (where the hair is ...sorry TMI just didn't know how else to describe it!). Its fine when I'm sitting down, but when I stand up and walk around I feel it straight away and it hurts :( My leg joints are fine so I didn't think it could be SPD as I read that that was a problem with you legs joints in your pelvis.

Has anyone had this or know what it might be? I didn't have this when I was pregnant with my DD (now 22 months).

Thanks for any replies, feeling pretty miserable.

Speak to MW and get physio referral. Don't do stuff that hurts (easier said than done!) and be careful on stairs [voice of experience]

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 12:08

Thank you for your reply. I have a MW appointment in a week and a half so will ask about it then.

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

I have SPD and am on crutches partly cos I didn't expect to get it (3rd pg) and didn't respond to the pain (and rest enough).

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 17:39

Thanks for the warning. I am hoping it's not SPD, but am wondering if it may be early symptoms??

It's not easy to rest with a 21 month old (as I'm sure you know if this is your 3rd pg) especially when DH workd abroad a lot and I have no family nearby, but will try to rest as much as I can and thank you for the warning. :)

Will ask mw about it when I see her, but if it gets any worse before my appointment I will call her earlier. It almost feels like the baby is pushing it's way out through the bone...horrible :(

nymphadora · 17/09/2010 19:09

That's what mine feels like , sorry :(

snowmummy · 17/09/2010 19:30

Sounds like SPD to me. I've had it with my two previous pregnancies and the pain was where you describe. Just waiting for it to kick in with this pg.

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 19:57

Oh dear :(
Everything I have read about it (although I admit that is not very much) seemed to say that SPD affects the joints of the legs and I read something in someone else's post about it hurting to move your legs apart, but I don't have that problem at the moment, so I assumed that it wasn't SPD.

Maybe I should ring the MW before my appointment, although from the sounds of it there is not much they can do :(

That's what mine feels like too- a kind of burning, pulling/tearing pain as well :(

nymphadora · 17/09/2010 20:28

I have a bump band to take some of the weight, physio gave me some exercises & now I have crutches.

muslimah28 · 17/09/2010 21:11

the bump band is great. i didn't have spd but had lots of pelvic pain. its to do with the hormones softening your pelvis in preparation for the birth.

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 21:17

Thanks I will ask about it. :)

I have bad SPD, have had it in all 3 pgs and can barely walk now. At my hospital they now call in "pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy" as you can get it anywhere around the pelvis apparently. Mine is in the 2 SI joints at the back (the dips in your lower back) and at the side and I can hardly stand up now as my legs just give way. I have no pain at the front and can open my legs fine. I think any hip, pelvis pain in pg is SPD TBH. Mine started at about your stage I'm afraid. Only things you can do are physio, osteopath, where a belt when out shopping etc, where flat shoes (I found trainers and birkenstocks the best) - but I am afraid these all offer only temporary relief and it just gets steadily worse until you give birth - so be prepared and try and factor in as much rest as possible at the end (impossible, I know)

burtoc · 17/09/2010 21:25

Fred, thanks for posting this, I have exactly the same problem, no issue anywhere else, but it just feels like a bruise is trying to come out in my pubic bone region. I am currently 21 weeks and think it started about 5 weeks ago. I have a mw apointment on Tuesday, i just need to remember to ask as my mind normally goes blank when she asks if I have any questions and normally respond with "no everything is fine"

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 22:11

Thanks for info and advice preghead , very helpful. I hope your SPD gets better soon, it sounds horrid and very painful.

Glad you've found this helpful too burtoc , nice to know I'm not alone. I have to say I was a bit worried about posting this as I felt a bit silly. I don't feel so silly now.

I had SPD and my midwife was clueless. I've also spoken to women who had it really bad, waited for NHS physio for weeks with no joy.

I had great results from a chiropractor. (I am NOT woo at all BTW!) It really did help enormously. Good luck!

LowLevelWhiinging · 17/09/2010 22:19

BTW, Burtoc and Fred, I had same symptoms as you, with pain in the pubic bone area. The chiro did such tiny little moves - not scary at all - and I walked out pain free.

Fredfred · 17/09/2010 22:43

Thank you LLW if MW doesn't suggest anything I'll look into a chiro!!

God you poor thing.

My experience is identical to LowlevelWhiinging's (great name BTW). My MW was useless and waiting around for an NHS referral totally pointless, in my area at least. If you have the cash get yourself to an osteopath immediately. Google around to find one who specialises in women/ pregnancy, if you can.

In the meantime, look up this website and follow its advice to the letter.

Fredfred · 18/09/2010 08:01

Thanks domesticlattern that is an excellent website. Can't really afford an osteopath, but will try to find the money somewhere as this is horrible and if it's going to get worse then :(
Maybe I will only need to see them once or twice.

Fredfred what you are describing is defo spd and its come on at the right time too.
I had 3 ds with no probs then with dd 8 yrs ago developed it. It is fight on your fanjo and really hurts. I am 20 wks now and was hoping it wouldnt come on but yeasterday did alot of walking and had a full bladder for abit and could hardly walk home. It does go off with rest at the moment.
Aggree with domesticlatter that there is no point waiting for the nhs they cannot treat it imo. I have been wearing a belly bra for awhile now to try and stave it off but last time i went to an osteopath and only had two sessions which were 25 pounds but 8 yrs ago. He cracked my back abit and gave me some accupuncture. I wont say it went off completely but i wasnt on crutches and worked until 39 wks so try to get the money up together. How about using some of your health in pg grant that you will get soon.
Does anyone else find it hurts more when bladder full?
I love the way this thread is active so early cos we are all up with sdp. Theres only so long you can lie there with a pillow between your legs:)

TwistAndShout · 18/09/2010 08:22

Sounds like SPD to me too, sorry.

I had it with all 3 of my pregnancies and recognise the pain you're describing.

ledkr · 18/09/2010 08:26

Gosh just read that website. isnt it disgusting that it can be treated but as far as i can tell nhs isnt really doing it.
Makes me cross.

Scatt · 18/09/2010 08:48

Do the belly band things help at all? I've got an osteopath appointment in a month but anything else that helps would be great!

buttonmoon78 · 18/09/2010 08:58

I had it with dc3 and am fully expecting it if we manage to conceive dc4. I had a band which literally pulled my pelvis together really tight and helped a lot.

I also had crutches once I'd got over the psychological effect of that!

Do insist on seeing an obstetric physio as an emergency case - make a big deal about the fact that you are primary (and often only) carer of your dc. Don't be afraid to play it up - I have a sneaking suspicion that the medical profession often listen to what we say then take it down a couple of notches in reality so if you want what your pain to be recognised then don't be afraid to big it up.

Sounds mental but it worked for me. Not that much bigging up was required at the end Sad

Fredfred · 18/09/2010 09:35

Thank you all soooo much for your advice, I really am very grateful. I will book an appointment with my GP first thing on Monday morning and make a fuss and in the meantime I will google obstetric physios/osteopaths/chiropractors and see if any specialise in this in my area.

Once again thanks so much. I am :( that it sounds like it is SPD, but :) that I am not wierd/unusual or something with this pain!! Its really reassuring to get all your advice as I have been really worried and down about it and I am on my own at the moment as DH is working abroad for a week and a half. Thanks again.
