anyone recommend nappy rash cream?

I know this isn't the right place to put this request but can't find a nappy/wee and poo thread. Am stocking up on the boring things I will need - nappies, etc. Anyone recommend a nappy rash cream we can have in just in case? I hate sudocream and how you can never wash it off your hands.

Sudocrem, but you Bounty packs will both have some in, you probably won't need to buy any toiletries at all before the baby comes.

EleFunTess · 11/09/2010 16:16

I do think Sudocreme is the best for preventing nappy rash or treating mild nappy rash. The annoying thickness is why it is so good - it's a great barrier cream.

Zinc and castor oil (Boots, Superdrug etc do their own brands) is slightly less thick and goopy, but pretty good, too.

Waitrose do a gorgeous natural one called Bottom Butter and it's only a couple of pounds a pot and smells lovely. Great for preventing and treating a mild rash, especially on dry skinned babies.

Metanium is great for bad nappy rash but you probably won't be needing it for the first few months at least, hopefully never.

mrsflux · 11/09/2010 16:41

bepanthen is good for really sore, red bums.

tbh disposable nappies are so absorbent that little ones won't really get much nappy rash to start with. we only really needed it if i used wipes ds bum didn't like or once he started teething.

NOTHEROLDIE · 11/09/2010 16:48

METANIUM was a live saver for us. (if things get really bad tho)

Sazisi · 11/09/2010 16:53

Bepanthen is really good, I've been using it on the babies I've minded and it seems to stop nappy rash even occuring, as well as clearing it up. It's a bit expensive, but a tiny bit goes a long way (pat it on like expensive face cream :o) so it lasts for ages.

I also like Weleda calendula nappy cream.

I don't like sudocreme either

Chynah · 11/09/2010 18:04

Metanium - brilliant for sore bots.

mousymouse · 11/09/2010 18:12

weleda here as well.

llandb · 11/09/2010 18:54

I thought Bepanthen and various nice natural ones great but DP favours drapolene (slightly cheaper than Bepanthen in big pots from Boots online).

And metanium for very sore bums (sticks to your hands like Sudocreme, though, and smells worse), and the GP gave me the green light to use Canasten for thrush spots.

Various people I know make their own based on almond, olive or peach kernel oil, or just use olive oil (or other plant oils) - I tried washing with olive oil in water on advice of a friend during a severe episode and it was helpful :)

mousebacon · 11/09/2010 22:15

Ooh. Metanium is brilliant! It's only a couple of quid but it'll work a treat. It stinks though!!

seaturtle · 11/09/2010 22:19

Weleda worked for us. DS' bottom skin was very sensitive and flaked with Sudocream,

BagofHolly · 11/09/2010 22:21

Sudocrem for every day use, Metanium for sore bums. It's a stinking staining yellow miracle in a tube and I always keep it in the house.

Octaviapink · 12/09/2010 15:40

Metanium. Also worth bearing in mind if you get bad rash in the first couple of weeks that a lot of babies are allergic to the gel that Pampers use in their nappies.

lal123 · 12/09/2010 15:48

Hated sudocrem - made DD1s bum bleed. We swear by conotrane

upturnj · 12/09/2010 20:13

Swear by Metanium mixed with a bit of vaseline. Apparantly this is what they use in the hopitals and it's the best tip I've picked up since becoming a Mum.

mellymooks · 12/09/2010 21:43

sudocrem - evil

Weleda calendula cream absolute best we've found.

Doodleydoo · 12/09/2010 21:47

Have to say the whole of dd's front bottom peeled off after sudocrem, so we used bepanthan - tbh it might be worth waiting until post baby as you will have some sudocrem in the bounty pack but if you dc has dry and or sensitive skin it could be better to just get plain castor oil and zinc, metanium make one which I used and was brilliant, but I think most pharmacists have one too.

dikkertjedap · 12/09/2010 22:19

sudocrem. However, I always tried to leave dd without nappy for as much as possible after changing to avoid nappy rash in first place (lost of airing ...)

Aitch · 12/09/2010 22:21

metanium only under dire circs, it is filthy stuff. i am a big fan of bepanthen, so much gentler imo.

dingdong3 · 12/09/2010 22:26

Please don't put chemical muck on your baby's bottom...metanium and sudocreme are evil..can't be good esp for little ladybits.

Weleda is fantastic as is Burt's Bees and Neal's Yard comes a close 3rd. Burts best for really bad nappy rash IMO.

Leo35 · 12/09/2010 22:33

Have used kamillosan with great success. Had some left over after bf (couldn't get hold of lansinoh in my market town backwater - so went for kamillosan). Used ointment version on both DSs for nappy rash, occasionally branching out into sudocreme in v.v. bad cases (still using Bounty pack pot) In all honesty going nappy free helps their rashy bums much better than anything else.

Off topic of original post I know, but if you have any lansinoh in the house (so useful for sore nipples when b/feeding), it's also great for chapped hands!! Using remainder of mine for v. dry hands and broken skin along with Crabtree and Evelyn Gardener's Hand Therapy hand cream.

CrispyTheCrisp · 12/09/2010 22:35

Metanium

Doodleydoo · 12/09/2010 22:37

Ooh and another Lansinoh use - when you get a dry nose with a cold.

Sorry! Another off topic moment!

nicm · 13/09/2010 00:33

i use burts bees and find it really good and no nasty chemicals either.

:)

kiwidreamer · 13/09/2010 08:15

I agree with avoiding the chemical based products, my DS reacted badly to sudocreme (and most brands of disposible wipes in his first 6mths) and bepanthen never seemed to work. The very best product we have used is Weleda Calendula Nappy Change Cream. We only have to use it every now and again, not even once a week, clears up any redness straight away and apart from the odd teething rash he's never had a really sore bum (now 2yrs).

The Weleda Baby FB page is great, they often do giveaways so you could get to try a sample size perhaps. It is expensive (buy online or from Waitrose / some Boots) but honestly you dont need to use very much so long run its economical and you know its all natural so big plus for me.
