Hi,

I have been searching this topic for sometime now and just wondered in reality what peoples experiences are. During pregnancy gaining weight and after loosing weight.

I am 13weeks and have gained 3lbs which i believe is relatively normal.

OP posts:

Everyone's different. I'm sure I read somewhere to expect 3-2-1. 3 stone if you were underweight, 2 stone if you were 'healthy' weight and 1 stone if you were overweight when you got pregnant.
I was 13 stone when I conceived DD (just on the cusp of being obese) and went up to 14 stone whilst pregnant. Within a week or so of giving birth, I went down to 12.5 stone. I'm 18 weeks now with my second, and about 11st4, having started this pregnancy around 11. I won't be worried if I put on more than a stone this time!

superv1xen · 09/09/2010 14:07

i think every woman and every pregnancy is different, I put on 3 stone Shock with my first then with my 2nd i only gained 20lbs, and didnt gain anything till about somewhere between week 16 and week 20 i think?

CheeseChomper · 09/09/2010 15:12

I'm 20 weeks on Monday and have put on about 6-7lbs, most seems to be bump and boobs at the moment, was 'normal' weight to begin with. If anything I reckon i've lost weight from other parts of my body due to not drinking and therefore also not having the hangover munchies- I did like to hit the pub after work and on a weekend... Blush

Am planning to keep the none boozing up once baby's born so maybe will be lighter than before I got pg (I can always be optimistic!) Grin

LaDiDaDi · 09/09/2010 15:18

I put on 2 stone, or just over as I forgot to weigh myself before going to hospital!

I was back to 7.5 stone by around 8 weeks without doing any dieting or exercise (though I diod bf what seemed like constantly!). I feel a bit sorry for celebs who get accused of madly dieting or exercising and neglecting their baby just to loose weight, some of us are just lucky! Have to say though, my tummy still looks untoned comnpared with before.

comtessa · 09/09/2010 15:22

Agree that everyone's different. I'm 5' 8" and have gained 2.5 stone, was 11'4" pre-pregnancy, size 10-12.

I'd gained 2 stone by 18 weeks, but only 7lbs since then. I'm definitely chubbier on my upper arms and thighs, but other than that it's all boobs and bump. MW was concerned at first, advised me to walk everywhere, go swimming and not eat too much junk food. But she's now fine with what I weigh as it's slowed down all by itself.

The way I see it is, I can do my (limited) best now in terms of healthy eating, low-level exercise, but I'm not going to worry about it until after I've had the baby as then I will really know what I've gained, and what was baby, placenta and fluids.

superv1xen · 09/09/2010 15:43

oh and i was only bump with baby #2 (look at my pics, there is a pic of me the day before i had her, i was tiny) but it took me MONTHS to get my tummy flat ish again despite that and the fact i didnt gain much. yet with my first i was back to normal very quickly even though i gained loads of weight.

brockleyD · 09/09/2010 19:10

I am 16.5 weeks and haven't put anything on yet! Which I have been a bit worried about as my books says I am meant to be putting on a pound a week!

batsforlashes · 09/09/2010 19:31

28 weeks and have put on 15lbs. Never weighed myself for my first 2 dc's but sort of wish I had to get an idea of where I am compared to the same stage then.

It has taken up til this pregnancy for me to even monitor my weight- it was such a battle losing it after no 2. Unfortunately I am one of the few people who put on weight while BF'ing- the weight just hangs on for dear life.

Mammie81 · 09/09/2010 20:48

Ive only gained 2lbs, and Im 27 weeks, but Ive had a lot of sickness and I dont find I can eat as much nowadays. Ive not watched what Ive eaten at all however.

Also, I was big to start with, and was told that bigger mummies dont put on so much. So maybe its a bit of that?

ScMacBt · 09/09/2010 20:59

this thread has worried me :( im 18 weeks and still losing weight. Was 53kg at 11 weeks and am now 51kg. Have been eating normally and actually have added in a small meal ie something like toast and cheese/cereal before bed. Does this mean im not doing something right?

dinkystinky · 09/09/2010 21:11

ScMacBt - if you're eating healthily and well, and midwives are happy at your checkups, you have nothing to worry about. As I said earlier, each person will have a different pregnancy and gain weight at different times and in different ways...

ScMacBt · 09/09/2010 21:15

dinkystinky - thanks im mostly worried as ds stopped growing at 21 weeks and it wasnt discovered until 37 weekss.

Have lots of growth scans this time to keep an eye on it. Have always been pretty small anyway but people keeep commenting and are assuming im not eating properly to keep myself small which hurts a bit...

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 09/09/2010 21:20

With my first pregnancy I gained 5 stone! I'm about 5ft6ins and around 9st 10lbs so nice and slim but I shot up to 15 stone!

My baby was a large baby though- 9lb 11.5ozs but that's no excuse really! I think I just ate all the wrong things and the novelty of it all! Before getting pregnant I used to run a lot and eat healthily.

After the birth I lost it all again through doing slimming world, breast feeding and walking lots, in a matter of months. It was great. I'd be losing at least 2 lbs a week sometimes as much as 4lbs!

I am currently pregnant with baby no2 and started off at about 9st 10lbs again and so far I have gained 2 stone so it looks like I am heading that way again but I am trying my hardest to keep it away from 15 stone. Grin

I wouldn't worry about your weight, I think the guidelines are a little ambitious and tight. If you eat healthily afterwards and do some walking then you will lose it all again. If you are planning on breastfeeding you can do slimming world and eat liike a horse and the weight will just fall off you!

BubsMaw · 09/09/2010 21:30

I'm not currently PG, but with both my previous PGs I gained in the region of 2.5 stone altogether, which I was happy with. The weight gain was pretty lumpy though, some weeks only gaining half a pound or so and other weeks gaining three or more. I read somewhere that in the last month of PG a baby is laying down up to half a pound per week in weight itself.

My BMI has historically been in the middle of the normal range (I've got lucky genetics, I eat all kinds of fatty cr@p, and seem to get away with it, the only thing that fattens me up is beer, which I cut down on years ago!). I think with the births I prob lost about half of the gained weight (baby, placenta, fluids etc), then by approx 6 months post birth I was back to normal weight, then both times with extended BFing I ended up being a bit underweight, and tired/knackered. Currently, my baby DS is a big fatty, and I'm getting a bit skeletal!

IME breastfeeding is a great way to get back in shape, I think, off the top of my head, that a baby drinks perhaps 750ml - 1 litre or so a day (can't tell exactly when BF!), which is prob 700 calories, all very roughly calculated.

I think with extended BFing I could have shifted 5 stone or more, now that I've done it twice I think I'd actually try to fatten up a bit in preparation when PG.

comtessa · 10/09/2010 10:52

Update: Hit 14st today!

Rocklover · 10/09/2010 19:53

The weight issue scares me. I don't eat a horrific amount, but I must admit I am not sticking to low fat foods as my nausea prefers full fat versions.

At 20 weeks I still feel sicky, but I am eating less than in the 1st trimester. I have no idea how much weight I have put on and it worries me as I was just over 11st (overweight for 5ft 4ish) before I fell pg. Another issue is that I am too tired to do much exercise (low iron) and being too active brings on the nausea badly.

Feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and am so terrified I will look like a hippo come birth-day!

planner26 · 10/09/2010 20:35

I stopped getting on the scales way long ago...no point, I'm eating (mostly) very healthy, swimming and I don't want to stress myself out by monitoring the scales.

I would guess I've put on about 1.5 stone though so far and 29w 2d so I don't think that's too bad.

saoirse86 · 10/09/2010 23:17

I'm 38 weeks and have gone from 8 stone 5lb pre-pregnancy to about 12 stone now. That's quite far above what I'm supposed to have gained but I definitely don't look huge. I've put on weight everywhere but gone from a size 8 to around a 12. I know it sounds like I've put on loads but I'm not concerned.

NowPanicAndFreakOut · 10/09/2010 23:52

Really glad to have read this thread - I've gained about 9lbs and am only 15 weeks but I was (not intentionally - just nature or genetics or whatever) "underweight" bmi-wise when I got pregnant. Am not overeating but if anything have a healthier diet now than before (the MacDonald's addiction has been cured!). Have read in books that underweight people "should" gain more weight - but this is first time I've read anything that says thin people tend to gain more weight. Must be first time in my life I've hit "normal" bmi (which as a guideline I'm afraid I think is utter rubbish).

BeedeBee · 10/10/2010 17:24

I'm 21 weeks and have put on 15 lbs, which is probably slightly too much. (BMI of 22 when I fell pregnant). Then again, I did have a month-long binge on cakes to get through the morning sickness, so it's no big surprise! Wink

MrsMogwai · 10/10/2010 18:19

I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow and am 7lbs down on my pre-pregnancy weight due to nausea. I've been feeling a lot better the past 2 weeks, but my weight has stayed stable. Don't have as much of an appetite as I did before. I'm overweight, so I'm hoping not to start laying the lbs on for a few weeks yet. I'm worried that if I put too much on, my back pain will come back with a vengence!

TooImmature2BMum · 10/10/2010 20:26

I'm 19+3, and last weighed myself about a week ago - had put on 5 or 6 lbs then. First pregnancy so don't really know what's normal - and definitely worried about it not coming off! Was slightly overweight to begin with, though.

lilly13 · 10/10/2010 21:17

in many european countries, pregnant women's weight gain is being carefully monitored. putting too much weight could result in many complications during late stages of pregnancy / birth and have a negative effect the woman's health / recovery after delivery. i follow the european, rather than the uk guidelines on this matter and have been keeping a food diary with calorie count, trying to not eat more than 200-300 calories more than pre-pregnancy (in fact, this is what most pregnancy books recommend). doing excercise, such as yoga and swimming, is also quite helpful.

June2009 · 10/10/2010 22:53

my relatives in france were telling me the guideline there was 1kg per month weight gain...
I started at 80kgs and was 117ks at week 41.
I put on 37 kilos, that's almost 6 stones. (omg Shock I just realised I never actually worked it out before!)
16 months after birth I'm 84kg and loosing about 1kg a week since I'm back to training.

I used to run everyday so I was quite fit pre-pregnancy but I slowed right down when I found out I was pregnant and then had SPD so I couldn't exercise anymore at all from quite early on (and I was still eating loads, way too much.)
The weight did not come off on its own and I'm currently calorie counting and training 5 hours a week which is working very well for me.

Next pregnancy I really don't want to put on as much. The birth centre rejected me 2 weeks before birth because I had put too much weight on, I ended up in the hospital being closely monitored, strapped to bed couldn't move etc and I think this was a major factor in me ending up having an emergency c-section.

lilly13 · 11/10/2010 08:31

Wow, congratulations on losing 33 kilos! That is truly impressive!

From the books i read, it appears that one's weight gain in pregnancy should be driven by one's initial BMI. Here is a general guideline:

BMI less than 19 -> gain 12 to 17 kilos
BMI 19 to 26 -> gain 11 to 15 kilos
BMI 27 to 30 -> gain 7 to 10 kilos
BMI 30 or above -> max gain 5-7 kilos

I think that sticking to a caloric count promotes disciplined and smart eating, and would help one to not gain too much weight, I recognise, however, that this is obviously not going to work for everyone...
