Your cures for morning sickness

I am sick of feeling constantly nauseous! Not actually thrown up yet but very close.
Gaviscon staves off a major queasy spell for a little bit. Renne chewy thugs are quite good.
Apples are ace but can only eat so many.

What are your fixes?

I NEED to stop feeling rubbish so I can be more fun for ds- oh and cope with teaching on Monday!

Eat something quite bland every 1-2 hours. Stay hydrated - I lived on Gatorade in the 1st trimester. Stay rested.

I don't think there is a cure!

ttalloo · 05/09/2010 09:52

poor you - morning sickness is horrible.

I really lost my appetite with morning sickness but I found that eating a little and often really helped to keep it at bay, even if it was just a yogurt or an apple or a few nuts every hour or so. Other than that, my strongest weapons against it were ginger nuts and pink grapefruit. I only took Gaviscon in an absolute emergency because it made me gag.

mrsflux · 05/09/2010 09:55

Trying the little and often but not working. :(
Think little one is doing lots of growing this week(according to my book) so maybe it'll ease off????

Had it till 20 weeks last time!

When I feel hungry I need to eat straight away or I begin to feel ill.

I am also restructuring when I eat as I feel most ill between 5 and 6pm so on days when I can be flexible, at this time I don't cook or eat - I have breakfast when I get up, an early lunch and something at 4pm.

I think you just need to find something that works for you.

japhrimel · 05/09/2010 10:41

I don't think there is a way of making it go completely, sorry. Little and often usually stopped me actually throwing up but it didn't get rid of the nausea.

Bumperlicious · 05/09/2010 10:55

Oh it's awful isn't it. Nothing makes it go away but things that helped a bit were:

Eating generally
Sour haribo
Lemon juice in water
this app it's a bit weird, but seemed to help a little

Like you I never threw up but just felt constantly sick, like a hangover for 3 months :(

maddylou · 05/09/2010 11:04

Water biscuits--very good

Dried apricots

manchestermummy · 05/09/2010 11:19

Poor you - you have my sympathies.

I'm nearly 31 weeks and still feeling sick (although I think this is now due to the baby running out of room in there!) and the only thing that has worked this time - and last - is little and often, and getting enough sleep.

Crackers are good (esp Carrs cheese melts, for some reason the salt really helps me) and any kind of berry.

emsyj · 05/09/2010 11:39

I got a pair of the travel sickness wristbands that they sell in Boots and they eased it enough to enable me to eat a full meal, which was the only 'cure'. They were about £7 I think and they supposedly work with acupressure. They worked for me anyway.

mrsflux · 05/09/2010 11:40

Travel bands no good. :(
Scoffing salt and vinegar crisps which are lush!

OP posts:
Marjee · 05/09/2010 11:52

Salt and vinegar crisps worked for me! I also found ginger ale was good but don't drink too much or it can give you trapped wind Blush

Daisy17 · 06/09/2010 18:33

Nibbling sandwiches through the day (Marmite or honey depending on whether the current craving is savoury or sweet!), sweet decaff tea and ginger cordial with fizzy water. Then I can just about cope! Yuk, hope it goes away soon for all of us, only 9.5 weeks so far for me, though. :(

sloathy · 06/09/2010 19:52

Oh it's so miserable isn't it. My only way of dealing with it so far in terms of food are:

pasta
potatoes
cheese
crisps
mixture of any of the above
malt loaf
weetabix

But none of them really cure it - just make is bearable. It just has to be stodge at the moment. Its the only thing I fancy and I figure I can eat healthily in the second trimester!

I've also found its much worse if you're tired so try and get lots of rest/sleep which I know must be difficult when you're working AND have other DC to look after.

PaulineCampbellJones · 06/09/2010 19:57

Green apples like Granny Smiths
Orange juice
Cheese
McDonalds fries (!)
Gaviscon made me throw up really badly

niamh29 · 06/09/2010 20:16

Eating 1/2 a banana or a cracker before you get up in the morning

Don't let yourself get too hungry or tired

Lying still, I need feel really bad if I'm lying down, if only I got to do that more!

1Catherine1 · 06/09/2010 20:30

Two things help me, neither are advisable while teaching a class. First, going to sleep often makes me feel better and secondly sometimes I just know I'm going to be sick next time I eat so I choose to eat something that doesn't hurt that much when coming back up, so for instance, I stay off the orange juice since it burns on the return journey. After being sick the feeling gets less intense.

I'm looking forward to my morning sickness easing off since I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and people keep mentioning this special time where it all gets better. I just hope I'm not one of those that get to suffer for the full 9 months.

I'm also jealous of those of you who are only feeling the nausea rather than being sick too. Lucky lucky people! So much better than the alternative Smile

My mum insisted when I was visiting her and feeling sick it was because I needed force something to eat inside me and only then would I feel better.

lilly13 · 07/09/2010 14:25

Drinking hot water with lemon juice (squeez 1 lemon and add 2 tea spoons of acacia honey) helps me....

Also, chewing on raw cacao nibs helps. However, if you normally drink a few cups of coffee/tea per day, I would not recommend chewing cacao nibs as they have caffeine, although they are a powerful antioxidant...

Drinking ginger juice helps some of my friends.

splodge77 · 08/09/2010 16:58

ginger tea helped me - grate some fresh ginger into cup of hot water with lemon and honey....also helps if you get a cold, which I seem to be very prone to during this pregnancy. Hope you feel better soon z

Sugarmuppet · 08/09/2010 17:02

Accupuncture. Spent first five months of pregnancy signed off work, nearly a month in hospital, three sessions with the needles and right as rain. amazing! If only someone had told me sooner!

1Catherine1 · 08/09/2010 18:46

I've been back at work now for 3 days after the school holidays that were filled with constant morning sickness and I've found a cure! (ish)

When I start to get that feeling in my stomach I eat between half and 2 digestive biscuits. It settles my stomach amazingly. Although I find them rather dehydrating so make sure your glass of water is handy. Since Monday I have only been sick twice and one of them was at home and set off by a bad smell.

jjkm - I loved my orange juice at first but is it only me who thinks throwing up orange juice is the most unpleasant thing to throw up! It burns sooo much!!

islandbaby · 09/09/2010 03:07

Dry crackers and oranges for me.

mrsflux · 09/09/2010 08:37

Same again today. Weirdly I feel much more ableto keep going today. Yesterday I wanted to dump ds in nursery and stay in bed. Today I feel like I can carry on as normal ( well almost normal ish).
Going to try second breakfast soon so will see how that goes.

Brushing my teeth is a trigger. I tried ds old toothbrush today and was much better than mine. Think I'll keep it! :)

mrsflux - I'm really feeling it too! Grateful I'm not being sick but it's horrible feeling queasy most of the day and off food... yet I'm eating/nibbling almost constantly to try and settle my tum!

I've found sweets (mints, cola bottles etc) are good and eat them while driving.

Also grapes and dried apricots to try and make up for the many many crisps! Fizzy water quite good too.

Anyone actually taken sickness tablets to survive at work? Would they help anyway?

1catherine1 sorry you've had actual sickness, that must suck while you're teaching especially, but hope your biscuit cure keeps working!
