Not eating for two when pregnant - warning RANT

So I'm now 22+4 weeks, and doing my best. My morning sickness ended at 20 weeks only to be replaced by heartburn, ezcema and an 'unpregnancy related' back problem. I am still at work plodding along. HOWEVER there is a women at work who has repeatedly told me how I shouldn't be eating for two in pregnancy (i'm surely not looking that big?!) and that in fact I shouldn't eat anything extra at all. At first I just brushed it off but it is now really winding me up. she likes to mention it as I tuck into a slice of cake (a fairly rare treat) or when i have more than one piece of fruit as a snack. Surely I deserve to be eating my 'extra' snacks in peace? I think the media are partly to blame for this too.

I am extra sensitive about my weight but have spent years putting this behind me and didn't really have an issue anymore however I hate being made to feel like I am doing something wrong by eating food...? Its not like she is slimmer than me usually. Why is everyone a pregnancy expert suddenly?

She is also telling me how her daughter is sailing through her pregnancy (well great for her)

Rant over, thank you I feel so much better now....(and breathe)

I hate the way people comment on you when pg.Should you be riding ya bike they ask me but they dont know that i have spd and pootling along on my bike is only way to pick up dd from school/I eat what i want within reason making sure its balanced but must admit i am now craving a slice of cake.

Well I am sick of "experts" (people that have had children) telling me that I am stupid to give up coffee and not eat certain cheeses. They roll their eyes at me.

I think - hang on - I'm not addict - it's no big deal to me to give up these things to be "on the safe side", why is it a big deal to you?

*I'm not AN addict

Argh I hate people commenting on my food. "Aren't those like... 300 calories EACH?!" People think they can do it to people who are pregnant and people who are thin, but wouldn't usually say anything to anyone else.... why?!!

I take the "Yes you told me that before" approach too. Takes every ounce of restraint to not launch in to a full blown explanation of my diet and why I need to eat certain things, in slightly abnormal amounts (have a condition which means I need shiteloads of calories).

Just eat exactly what YOU know you need, it's your body and your baby and I'm sure that you know loads more than her.

prettywhiteguitar congratulations - but youre deluded if you think that the advice will stop once you have your baby!!

And if you read my post properly ColdComfortFarm although you do say you are pregnant, so I'll let you off - congrats to you as well -

"sugar is really bad news for you and your babe, and also for your arteries. *Sugar damages your arteries' linings: they become rough and that attracts plaques - increasing your chance of getting a stroke or cardiac arrest.

Getting gestational diabetes can be very bad news for your entire life - surely not worth gorging yourself on cake just for a few months?"

No where did I say that "Sugar furs up arteries".

Sugar damages the lining of your arteries, making them rough which then acts as a base for any fats in your blood to stick to them. Hence the furring up of sugar damaged arteries by blood fats /cholesterol.

Best to avoid the sugar.

I will agree that sugar is not a great thing to eat lots of at any time especially when pregnant - empty calories etc.

However eating sugar does not cause gestational diabetes. When I was preg the first time I couldn't even look at anything sweet for the first 20 weeks without it making me wretch - even fruit yogurt or juice was a no go. I didn't over do the carbs either but still developed GD at 24 weeks. I have always been a healthy weight for my height.

I'm now 22 weeks with number 2, haven't been adverse to the odd biscuit or chocolate bar and I've been loving the summer fruit in large ammounts, however monitoring my blood sugars, everything is fine. I'm well aware that as things progress and I have higher levels of Preg hormone in my system the chances are the GD will come back - It's an 80% chance.

Interestingly, my dietician has said for me to be sensible but not to eat like I have GD as it will make me miserable and probably less likely to be able to control my sugars in later pregnancy by diet alone as I'll be sick of steamed chicken, raw oats and celery by then. Eating sugar now will not make my GD come back - that's a hormone thing.

Regarding OP - I think that person has issues. But people think you are public property when you're pregnant and there doesn't seem to be a way of avoiding that.
