WINTER BABIES what will they wear?

Hello,

I am having a baby at the end of January. I think it will be very cold. What do I need to bring the baby home. A snow suit?

Well, you'll be between hospital and car, then car and home extremely briefly, so I wouldn't worry too much about it being cold. Vest, footed bodysuit, hat, mittens and blanket should be fine.

nunnie · 25/08/2010 14:05

Mine is due end of October and I have packed a snowsuit, but will see if needed on release day.

QueenSconetta · 25/08/2010 14:06

We used snowsuits a lot when DD was little (born in November), so I would recommend them, but as Octavia says probably not essential for coming home from hospital.

We brought DD home in vest, velour sleepsuit, woollen cardigan and blanket.

whatnolooroll · 25/08/2010 14:10

If it's your first time fitting the car seat with a baby in it you will probably spend quite a while fiddling around with it so something warm enough for that. However a snowsuit is not ideal as then you'd have to unwrap totally (and readjust the staps accordingly) when the car heater got going.

I'd use a decent wooly blanket for getting from the hospital to the car and then just take it off once the heating's on.

QueenSconetta · 25/08/2010 14:10

Meant to say, snowsuits tended to be quite big I found, and DD ended up wear a Newborn size one from M&Co which should have been too small for her according to the weight guidance for the first 5 weeks or so, so you might want to think about getting a relatively cheap one in a very small size.

We had 2 0-3 months ones with us in hospital but she couldn't wear either of them cos they were far too big.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 25/08/2010 14:17

DD came from from the hospital in mid January in vest, sleepsuit, cardi, one of [[http://www.babyrug.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=2 these] and a blanket over the top. We never had a sleepsuit, just too bulky and didn't think they were warm enough, preferred to go with layers.

My 3DS is due at the end of October and I am packing a newborn valour snowsuit (so not major thick) and a wool cardi I also have a footmuff on his carseat so he will be in a vest, a sleepsuit, a hat a cardi or snowsuit depending the weather and his footmuff I have this one so nice and cosy

DirtyMartini · 25/08/2010 14:37

Is it wrong that this thread is making me broody when dc2 is only four months old?

Good luck with all your cuddly winter bundles :)

daisystone · 25/08/2010 15:44

My friend recommended a snow suit - her daughter was born in February.

Mind will be a November baby and I have already got her M&S snowsuite ready and waiting. Its so padded - looks very cosy.

legallyblond · 25/08/2010 15:55

I have bought a snow suit in size 0-3 months. My baby is due end of Sept though. I don't imagine I will be going out too much or, if I do, I don't think I will need a snow suit when he/she is very newborn and tiny. In the pram I will use blankets and layering probably. Winter proper will kick in a bit later, when the baby is a month or two old and the snow suit is (I envisage) going to be used mostly for being in the sling.

Shit you ladies have reminded me that i have made the same mistake yet again, ds3 is also due end oct and i have done exactly the same thing a with ds1 ( end dec ) and ds2 ( sept ) , bought cute things ive seen in the shops over the summer in newborn amd 0-3 which will be TOTALLY the wrong clothes for the time of year - I cant resist the liitle bodysuits etc. I kid myself that it will still be warm when of course it wont be. Damn, better get a snow suit qnd noone will see his lovely clothes underneath sob! Can anyonw recomend ones that arent too bulky and unwieldy, i have a 0-3m one but both dss hated it and it was like trying to dress/undress a sea urchin.

Bought boths ds home with vest, babygro, cardi and carseat blanket/footmuff as required as others have said oh and a hat, no immediate panic for the snow suits.

Always wanted a summer baby who could just loll around in cute little bodysuits and have long, warm dry walks, sigh ...

I got a gingerbread man one from Mamas and papas, it was advertised at the wrong price in the sale, I got it for £12 and it is gorgeous not too thick. Think it might be £24 again now though.

daisystone · 25/08/2010 16:16

Mine is Marks and Spencers - mainly white.

It is from their Petit Bebe range. It is a kind of velour padded thing. Very soft.

Maclaren · 25/08/2010 20:33

I have the M&P gingerbread one too its lovely mine was a bargain carboot buy £2 :)

Booner · 25/08/2010 23:49

I had a December baby and bought a red castle babynomade blanket which has a hood you can use in a car seat and open the blanket up if it gets warm. It was extremely useful.

moominmarvellous · 26/08/2010 10:09

I brought DD (mid Jan baby) home in a beautiful white fluffy pramsuit from Mamas & Papas which said Welcome to the World on it. Admittedly she only wore it twice more but I have it now for baby 2 to come home in in mid-late Oct.

One thing I had for her through the winter months though, which was a godsend as it meant we didn't really need to use the sleepsuits, was one of these:
morrck.com/department/all_season_baby_hoodie/

So cosy and she looked so sweet in it....sounds like what Booner has reccommended actually!

moominmarvellous · 26/08/2010 10:10

Oh my link didn't work. If you google morrck you can see all the different styles they do now.

BeingMother · 01/09/2010 14:23

Another vote for the Bug in a Rug - worth their weight in gold IMO

japhrimel · 01/09/2010 14:36

Brilliant idea, thank you! Grin

I'm planning on packing a blanket to bring baby home if we have to go into hospital. But with baby due in December I thought a pramsuit would be a good idea - but finding ones that aren't white or baby pink is hard and DH instantly hated the ones Jojo do! Hmm

boognish · 01/09/2010 18:40

Actually, I have another question. This is my first time, Inner city baby due in February. Hoping to bring the baby home without a car in a moses basket, which would be a 15-min walk normally, probably 20 given sprog attachment. Can DP do this with newborn nicely wrapped in snowsuit etc?

If this were impracticable (say I'm not in walking mode), would there be anything to prevent us taking the baby home in a London cab in a baby sling? Or would we need to fit a carseat into a London cab? (Not even sure this is possible...).

japhrimel · 01/09/2010 19:02

Legally, you can take a baby in a cab without a carseat - there is a legal exception specifically for professional cabs.

Moses baskets aren't great for carrying any real distance IMO - it's too hard to keep it level and even so the baby doesn't slide around. A sling or newborn suitable pushchair would be easier. But yes, newborns can go outside in snowsuits etc.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 01/09/2010 20:00

October? Snowsuits? Where do you people live? Are these first borns?

nicm · 01/09/2010 23:44

baby due in december and i was planning on a babygro with cardigan and hat and a blanket over the footmuff on the car seat. i don't think it will need a snowsuit as we'll only be going between hospital and car and then car and house? maybe i'm wrong though??? Confused ds was born in spring so it was warmer.

:)
