Hello,

I am having a baby at the end of January. I think it will be very cold. What do I need to bring the baby home. A snow suit?

I've bought some cute (and cheap) hand knitted stuff off ebay little cardis and stuff, etsy does pretty things too, but more expensive I find. I will make a few blankets but can't do anythign intricate.

boognish it is not practical to carry a Moses basket that far, they are not designed for that. You will need a pram or pushchair for the baby anyway at some point so why could you not use this?

However I strongly suggest you plan to get a cab home from hospital if you do not have a car, rather than walking. It is not a good idea to carry a newborn in a sling in a cab just in case of accidents. I am sure you can fit a newborn carseat in a London cab but if you are concerned why not book a minicab? The staff may not let you leave the hospital without a car seat if you are planning to travel home by car.

I really don't think you can walk home in the moses basket - they are not designed for outdoors - you would probably be ok to walk home carrying the baby (or your DP) wrapped up in a suit and hat if only 15/20 mins. I personally wouldn't but a newborn into a sling straight away - they are too tiny, think I've always waited a week or two for the wrap slings and 3/4 weeks for the baby bjorn carrier type ones. All taxis and minicabs have seat belts so that is all you need to put a carseat in a taxi - just use the seatbelt. You could also just put it on th efloor between your feet or, if you don't have a car and don't need to get one, you could just hold the baby in your arms while you are in the cab as, as someone else has said, there is a legal excemption for children and carseats in licenced cabs. I personally would feel a bit nervous about this but it's a short journey I guess.

If it was me I would borrow a carseat and put it in the cab with the seatbelt.

Someone has already mentioned the Morck (?spelling) baby hoody and that was BRILLIANT. I think I got it from the NCT catalogue?

Basically once we got one of them I never used the snowsuits again.

We really like the Morrck in our house - and I find the car seat fits better. If anyone is going to buy a Morrck the free postage code EGARE564 works - I think it goes in the comments box.

I am really late to this thread but I want to say PLEASE don't put your baby in a thick coat or snowsuit in the car. It is dangerous. OR make REALLY sure that if you use one, you have double checked the harness tension.

I agree with the comment above - the Morrck hoodie is brilliant because it keeps your baby safe and warm but once your car heats up, it's really easy to unwrap your baby

STOP, you should never use a coat or snowsuit in a car seat, they are too thick and can compress in an accident and the baby can slip out. Just put your baby in normal indoor clothing and then put something warmer over them outside the straps. Have a look at this video
