Can I be nosey and ask are they doing it on your due date or slightly over? there's mass controversy where we are about some mw's refusing to do them before or on due dates and even 3 to 5 days after.
Positive story - Friend had one done day after due date and daughter born 12 hours later, good luck! x

lollyheart · 04/08/2010 11:59

I had one with dd at 40+1, i had her the next morning.

I had one with ds1 at 38 weeks, my dsis baby was still born the week before, we were due at the same time, my mw could see how worried i was, i was 3cm when she done it so i must of been ready anyway, he was born the next day

southcoastmum · 04/08/2010 12:08

i am only 39 weeks today so was surprised when she said she would do it, i have been in loads of pain though so it would be a relief to get it over with.

i was told they do them in my area from 38 weeks?

I think the general MN opinion is that sweeps are useful if the cervix is pretty much ready to go but if not, then just painful and unproductive.

Fingers crossed that you are pre-labour and this is enough to set you off!

Good luck

getstuffed · 04/08/2010 12:35

I guess they make a call at the time depending on the state of mum and baby, fair enough. I'm 34 weeks and can imagine by the time I get to 39 I'll be howling at the mw about how unfair it is that friend x and y got sweeps

Palace39 · 04/08/2010 12:40

Does anyone know why they do this in certain areas but not others? I'm 38+1, pretty uncomfortable with SPD and quite large bumpwise, i don't know what the rule is in this area but if i could have one near due date i'd rather...

southcoastmum · 04/08/2010 15:41

well had it done!

was not as bad as i expected but the midwife did not give much away, head is down and no bother feeling cervix (is my 3rd tho) but then gave me a pee pot and said see you next week

will just have to wait and see.

I hope it kicks something off SCM!

I had one yesterday at 39+6 and no signs of anything today (due today). My cervix was closed apparently, so I'm not holding out any great hopes.

getstuffed · 04/08/2010 21:39

Fingers crossed for you tonight ladies!

Jenny95 · 04/08/2010 22:09

i had a sweep at 40+1 (was painful), didnt work so getting induced tomorrow at 2pm (ill be 41+1)

southcoastmum · 05/08/2010 11:23

well nothing to report so far, i take it things would have started moving by now if the sweep had done anything?

baby was VERY active last night, i thought it was trying to tunnel its way out at one point but everything has calmed down now.

I've just called the midwife in tears to ask if i can have a sweep or anything else that might kick start labour- i'm in so much pain from SPD and Sciatica that i can't walk- she said no. No discussion.

How can it be that these are available in some areas and not others? Has anyones sweep done any good yet..?

southcoastmum · 06/08/2010 11:35

no still nothing from me, i am in agony as well. have to go out to shops today for a couple of last min bits that i cant get on web and i could cry at the thought.

if i survive the shops i might go for a bit of a walk then jump dh and hope that starts something of, my bump is resting on my thighs as i type and i dont think i can cope with another night of no sleep.

but hey ho it will all be worth it in the end Grin

I've warned DH that he is to 'provide on demand' later.. the kid must come out and that's that, i can't cope anymore. Incidentally he didn't seem to have a problem with that. I'm getting some occasional shooting pains but it feels more like those are related to baby moving his head (he's a wriggler) rather than anything else.

Not that i would know, this being my first...

MrsC2010 · 06/08/2010 15:24

I'm due to have one tomorrow, I'll be 40+6. We're not allowed till we're a few days overdue. Apparently they are great if your body is pretty much ready to go, I'm hoping that as the baby is pretty much full enagaged and I've had a few nights of regular Braxton Hicks/contractions it'll have some effect. If not it'll be interesting to see/hear what my cervix is like!

southcoastmum · 06/08/2010 15:41

well my dh is not much good at the moment, the pressure seems to be getting to him a bit Hmm

taking me every ounce of compassion i have to not to rip him to shreads and say he is not a real man (obv would not do this but am in no mood for being nice)

deemented · 06/08/2010 15:51

I had a sweep done at 39+3 - That was at 4pm. I was back at the hospital by 5.30 that evening having contractions every 3 mins. DD was born at 12.55am the next morning.

Good luck!

Palace39 · 07/08/2010 14:03

Well, jumped dh, still nothing so you're not alone southcoastmum, except some period like pains this morning but that appears to have trailed off. FFS.

deemented did you ask for a sweep at 39+3 or did you have issues and they offered? I don't understand why my midwife is refusing me, they won't even examine me to see if he's fully engaged (was 4/5 a week and a half ago). I really feel that i've been left to suffer with this. Am even considering ringing the hospital to see if i can see a consultant rather than a midwife to discuss, not that i know whether this will make any difference...

June2008 · 07/08/2010 15:09

Just to add in my experience; I spoke to my consultant a week or so ago and apparently the current NICE guidelines are that you can request a sweep any time from 37 weeks. I guess from there it depends on trust policy.

I am hoping for a sweep at 39 weeks+ this time as I also have SPD and would really like to not go too far over if possible. I went into labour with DD after a second sweep last time.

MrsC2010 · 07/08/2010 17:04

I had one today, which was quite uncomfortable to be honest. Apparently she couldn't quite reach my cervix as it was tucked back, and she couldnt' get to it because the baby's head is so low?! As such she said the very low head is really positive, and I've got to go back for a 2nd one on Mon to see if she can reach the cervix. Induction is now booked for Thurs, when I'll only be 41+4...but they don't do them on weekends and they're really busy. Fingers crossed she gets going before then!

sarahj1 · 18/08/2010 10:44

i had a sweep 4 days over my due date with my first and went into labour within a couple of hours, im going to see my midwife today and going to ask if i can i have a sweep im 39+1, good luck Smile p.s what is dh n pp? cheers,

sarahj1 · 18/08/2010 10:46

hi i had a sweep at 40+3 with my first and went into labour around 2/3 hours later it hurt but was worth it, im asking for one today im 39+1 but have spd this time round and struggling to sleep, so fingers crossed, :) p.s what does dh and pp mean? cheers.

CharlyH · 18/08/2010 17:36

Intresting thread.

From reading these posts it seems like if your body is ready it works and if not, it doesn't. On this basis - is there any point?

littleElif · 18/08/2010 18:18

had it with DD at 41+1. found it awwwwwwwful. never again. besides, it did not do the trick. was induced at 41+4 and had DD by 41+5.

Mumkay · 06/09/2010 15:00

Well ladies, I have just spent the most uncomfortable 2 days of my life. At 38 +5 SPD since week 30 on crutches and support belt, can't turn in bed without yelping out in pain. I took consultants advice to be induced. Prosten 3 times and then a cervic sweep. Elected to come home from hospital for a rest. Had a show, apparently mucous plug has gone 2 days ago now. It's no fun having labour pains for 2 days solid and your cervics will not ripen. Feels like baby is trying to claw his way out. I'm back in 2days time for a further consultation. But choose not to have further prostiglandin ripen process. I now firmly believe if your body is not ready you shouldn't tamper. I now have to remain on the sofa all day and suffer emmence pain at night with pelvic pain travelling down outside of legs from hips to kness and into my ankles - depending on which side I'm lying on. Roll on natural labour.

Feel like we are all searching for the quick way to help eleviate trying times, but my experience now tells me the apple will only drop when it's ready.

Best of luck to all of you.

Kay xx
