If you had 3 caesarians, can you have more children after? Most doctors say - No.? Must have their reasons for that.

I will be having my 3rd in Feb. When i had my 2nd one two years ago the surgeon actually said to me whilst sewing me backup that i was good for a few more yet!

Meglet · 30/07/2010 16:31

I stopped at 2, there were no problems with the 2 I had, but I didn't want to risk it. I don't think the GP was bothered either way.

My friend had 2 and when the second was whipped out she had really bad womb adhesions and they told her she shouldn't risk anymore pregnancies.

Have you had smooth running pregnancies and did you heal well after the cs's?

sonamay · 30/07/2010 17:33

Thank so much for your for your replies.

I'm due for my 4th c-section in December.

The midwife told me not to have anymore with a stern look on her face.

I saw my consultant for the first time on Thursday & she said that she'd like to do my c-section, not sure why.

She did ask if i wanted anymore kids & i said i'll be honest with you.... yes.

She also offered to cut my 1 remaining tube whilst having my c-section, which i wasn't expecting.... i said no.

I do have a fair amount of scar tissue inside but i am fully aware of the risks.

I healed well with my 3 previous c-sections and hope to heal well with the 4th.

I would dearly love another baby after this one which would make it 5 c-sections. However i will listen to what they say at the time of my 4th c-section.

Most doctors will say no to a 4th c-section but if your aware of the risk & are happy to try for another baby, then what can they say when your pregnant? They may not like it but they'll still do the c-section. Just be aware of the risks.

To Julezboo,

I'll be having mine in Feb too Good luck!

I've had 3 sections and when I was having the third the obstetrician said he wouldn't advise me having any more babies as my uterus was so thin and scarred at the bottom.

sonamay · 30/07/2010 17:40

Good luck to you, serendipity16! The fact that the offering to cut the tube freaks me out.

My Mum had 4 C Sections - 3 of them in the 1970's.

No problems that I'm aware of. I guess everyone's recovery is different though.

sonamay · 30/07/2010 17:42

So I guess it depends what the doctor says after the operation.

I'm on my third. Consultant has talked about next pregnancy but not in reference to sections. Not sure yet whether I can do another after having a bad time this pg. Dh would like to but the step from 3 to4 may push our finances too far too.

I will ask consultant in case we do decide to.

serendipity16 · 30/07/2010 19:34

Thanks Sonamay

I was a little freaked out by their offer to cut my tube.
I was thinking about asking to be asleep for my c-section but now thinking about it, i think i'll stay awake..... just to make sure they know not to cut my tube lol.

I know it sounds silly but i do feel sad that i'm limited to how many children i can have. I know my 1st c-section saved my daughters life but it makes me kinda sad that i can't have as many kids as i want to.

HobbitMama · 30/07/2010 19:43

I'm having my 4th cs in December, and so far, all the medical professionals I've seen have said that it's not going to be a problem. I'm sure that I've read somewhere of the odd occurrence of people having more than 4, but I guess it's going to depend on how the operations go, how you heal and recover from them.
I'll be asking them to tie my tubes this time, but that's because I don't want any more children, because I wouldn't be able to cope looking after them, and we couldn't afford to have any more, rather than because I don't want another cs.

mummytosquidgies · 30/07/2010 21:38

I'm having my 2nd on 19th August, and when we saw the "special" midwife (apparently part of procedure here when you're having an elective) she said that after 2 sections your 3rd MUST be a section, and then they don't recommend you have any more- as the risk of placental abruption is too high for them to be happy with. But then I can't see them being able to do anything about it if you do go on to have a 4th.

When my cousin had her 2nd cs, they could see her DS through the scar before they cut the uterus, as it was so thin- she had him at 37 weeks and they said to her if they had waited longer it would have split, so bloody lucky she had him when she did! And obviously they've said to her she's not to risk having any more now.

So I think a lot of it depends on the scar and it's strength, as well as the policies at your hospitals.

We're not planning on having any more children after this one comes, and I think not being "allowed" to have a 4th has factored in to this decision, as we'd always said 2 or 4 (don't know why!)

mummytosquidgies · 30/07/2010 21:39

And I don't mean placental abruption there do I! I mean uterine rupture. Sorry

carriedababi · 30/07/2010 22:00

why does it matter if you have adhesions?
or even a thin uterus?

whats the risks involved in that?

baby bursting out of the uterus or something?
i can't see that happening

chipmonkey · 30/07/2010 22:26

I have had four. I asked my obs about a fifth and he said no problem, he has done loads of them! But in the hospital I go to he is the doctor you will be referred to if you are a mad bint lucky enough to be having more than 4 sections.

Still don't think I will be having another, though.

chipmonkey · 30/07/2010 22:28

carrie, AFAIK the more CS;s you have the more risk there is of the placenta actually growing into and possibly through the old wound. A lady on another forum I go on had this happen on her 7th CS.

chipmonkey · 30/07/2010 22:29

Meant to say, don't think the baby would burst out or anything like that but there is a risk of bleeding to death/ having to have an emergency hysterectomy.

chipmonkey · 30/07/2010 22:30

It's called placenta Accreta.

I really am just talking to myself here, aren't I!

Sidge · 30/07/2010 22:35

Uterine rupture can occur - it's not common but it is possible.

I know a lady that sadly lost her 3rd baby after a section for twins - she ruptured and the baby was expelled into the abdominal cavity and died She also needed a hysterectomy.

carriedababi · 30/07/2010 22:36

oh thanks chipmonkey, i like to understand why.
as if i have anymore children i might have a cs.

thankyou for the answer

carriedababi · 30/07/2010 22:41

so what the standard amount your allowed to have? 2?

nymphadora · 30/07/2010 23:00

Think the scar healing time makes a difference too

chipmonkey · 30/07/2010 23:28

Teh standard recommended is 3. As an informed adult you are "allowed" to have as many as you choose, though.

NickiAndAlex · 31/07/2010 20:10

A friend of mine had had 2 sections, and when pregnant with the 3rd, the doctors told her she had to have another one. The baby had other plans, though, and came so quickly that they had to deliver her normally.
