If you had 3 caesarians, can you have more children after? Most doctors say - No.? Must have their reasons for that.

I am having my 4th in 2 months.........In my old trust they said fine for another.

Here they would have said sterilisation if I wanted at 3 don't have anymore. They are ok with it though, I haven't been told off or made to feel stupid it's something they have dealt with before and will have to again, they can't do much when you are pregnant.

Cons said the risks are minimal however, the risks are uterine rupture, placenta accretia.
This can mean the placenta can go through the uterus, old wound and even to other organs which is the most serious form.

My placenta is high up an the back which is good plus I have a scan to assess position of it at 32 weeks so they can risk asses and be prepared.

The BIGGEST risk is that you have lots of adhesions and scar tissue which can cause your organs to sitck together, eg your bladder, bowel, uterus. Which makes delivery harder.

It's all worst case stuff though that they will anticipate by ordering more blood, just incase ifyswim. He said it's not stuff they can't deal with.

Here a consultant does elective as standard but in my case if it's an emergency the oncall consultant will be brought in and a senior reg will start if it's a hurry, hurry. It's because due to the number they'd rather have a more experienced surgeon on hand.

I will be getting my tubes done though as I personally don't want to push my luck.

I was told after having DS2 by emcs (DS1 was also emcs) that I could have my tubes tied when I have a third baby.

However, I am not planning an elective section if and when I fall pregnant again. I am separated so if I do have more children it will be with a different partner so the whole pregnancy etc could be very different.

A friend of mine had 2 cs and went for a vbac. Sadly this ended in cs too, but the hospital (Manc way) were very supportive of vba2c

I've had 3 caesarians (all emergency) and it was made very clear to me that it was not medically advisable to have a 4th cs. Their main reasons were that of placenta accreta and uterine rupture- plus the mess of scar tissue that could complicate surgery. While I was having DC3 I met a lady who had placentra accreta and TBH she really went through hell and back- her placenta had grown along her old cs scar and through it to her bladder. She had to have a complicated cs under general, followed ten days later by very serious surgery to sort out her bladder as they couldn't remove all her placenta during the cs. Her baby had to be delivered early too and ended up needing NICU, which combined with having had to stay in hospital for 9 weeks apart from her other children- all due to the placenta accreta- made for a very traumatic time. I know the chances are still slim of this happening with a 4th pregnancy but personally I would not want to risk it.
Like others have said of course consultants/surgeons will perform 4th or 5th cs's but they makes no bones about the increased risk.
We would have loved 4 DCs but are stopping at 3, though this is not only due to the repeated cs's but also because I don't do pregnancy well (get pre-eclampsia each time!)

When I was having my 4th CS I met one of those arrogant young doctors who are under the impression that qualifying as a doctor=deification. He acted as though I were a total idiot ( "Your fourth? But we advise you not to have more than three!" However, at 39 weeks pregnant, he couldn't offer me an alternative suggetion as to what I should do.....

I've had 3 c-sections and am contemplating a fourth child. Nothing was said to me after the birth of no.3 although I would defo stop at 4. Just out of interest, what does having your tubes tied involve? How does it impact recovery and how much longer does the op take?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 01/08/2010 20:02

I have a friend who's had five c-sections. On her fifth the doctor did say that it was all looking a bit iffy (well, actually he said something far more technical and medical about thickness of uterus and scar and so forth) so he would advise not to have any more and she had her tubes tied. But she had no problems with the five she did have.

This was in New Zealand -- she did have a consultation with the doctor who'd performed her fourth c-section before TTC baby #5 to get his opinion on whether it would be safe for her.

I'll be having a forth cs in February. I did quite a bit of research online (mostly American medical sites) which spelt out the risk of multiple cs's. After the second cs, the risk doesn't really get much more, unless the surgeon has spotted a potential problem in the last surgery - and they will tell you if there is anything to be concerned about.

I spoke to my midwife at length about it, and with my personal history, has no problem with my having another, but said that the consultant wouldn't recommend a fifth.

I think there is a woman in America who has had ten!

chipmonkey · 02/08/2010 17:26

AFAIK, there is a woman here in Ireland who has had 13.

I had the "near uterine rupture" thing with cs2 - they did the cs because I was bleeding from placenta praevia, and they said the scar was starting to separate - the surgeon just stuck her finger through and opened it!

A couple of years later I saw a consultant who said it was fine to have another baby. So we did - that ended in placenta accreta and a hysterectomy.

But hey, I have 3 lovely children! (and no periods - that's a bonus)

chipmonkey · 03/08/2010 20:52

I remember that, fruitful. It was very scary for you at the time, wasn't it!
I had placenta praevia with ds3 but an uncomplicated CS with ds4. I was very lucky, I think.
