Boy or girl???

At my 20 week scan, we were told that we are having a girl because the sonographer saw 3 visable white lines. Is this usually a valid way of determining the sex of a baby girl?

Jenny95 · 27/07/2010 23:44

yep

Roz14 · 27/07/2010 23:57

Thanks Jenny95. I was just a little paranoid after reading a different thread.

When I initially had the scan, the sonographer said the babies legs were crossed and so could not determine sex. After a short time she the baby uncrossed its legs and although I couldn't see anything boy-like there, the sonographer said she was 90% certain it was a girl because of the 3 white lines.

I would be happy with either boy or girl, as long as they are healthy but have started buying loads of pink stuff!

Oh forgot to ask. Has anybody else been told that there was three lines but when the baby arrived it was a boy and do you think 90% accuracy is sufficient enough to justify buying pink things? I have kept all the receipts though just in case . Like I said previously I am really happy with either has long as they are healthy but I think I would just be a little shocked.

Personally I don't think anything justifies pink things, but then I was forced into pink by my mother until I was 12!
If you like stuff though, I would say go for it, but keep the receipts and maybe get some neutral stuff for her first few days, just in case. It is suggested you wash new baby clothes before they wear them, and you obviously won't be able to return anything you have washed.

giddywithglee · 29/07/2010 11:38

Congrats Roz! I just had my 20 week scan and I'm apparently expecting a boy - the sonographer pointed out his boy bits so we hope it's pretty certain (or I'm having a very strange girl).

As long as you won't be too disappointed if you get a boy at the end, why not go out and buy pink stuff? Even if she does come out as a he, they won't know they're in pink so they won't have an identity crisis!

And who says pink is only for girls? Back at the turn of the century pink was for boys not girls so you could say you're starting a movement to bring it back!

But seriously, although there's always a chance it could be a boy, I don't see why you shouldn't get pink stuff. You can always change it if you really have to!

It's what they look for, certainly - it's not just a lack of boy bits that makes them think girl.

It's never 100%. Our sonographer only got one look as baby kept crossing her legs. She said it was probably a girl, but don't paint the nursery pink just based on that!

We're going for neutral newborn stuff anyway. Newborns don't need "outfits" so there's little point in buying lots of newborn size pink dresses. You can always buy those when she arrives if it is a she and get them in the next size up.

Roz14 · 29/07/2010 11:57

Thanks - I totally agree. He/she doesn't have to be a girl to where a bit of pink. {smile}.

Like I said, i have got the recipts and have also got a beautiful little boy already, so have got both plenty of neutral and blue things if needed.

If it definately is a girl, she will be wearing some blue anyway from what was my sons. Either way, I wouldn't be disaappointed as long as she/he and me are both ok. Just very, very suprised [shocked].

Japhrimel- I set out with that in mind, but I think that one of the negative things about most people finding out gender pre birth is that now, more and more baby stuff is strictly divided along gender lines. It's kind of annoying. The pink stuff is getting more girly and frilly and the blue stuff is getting more "boyish".

We know we're having a boy but I was going to try to get everything unisex so can be reused for the next one.

Where's all the lemon and green or vaguely unisex stuff?

I suppose there's always white.........sigh.

cinnamongreyhound · 29/07/2010 13:25

We were told we're having a boy and it looked pretty conclusive to me too. As far as I know the three lines are the labia but having had one boy and told we're having another I have no practical experience.

It's awful trying to buy neutral stuff it is either white or beige and not much of it either. I have a nice set of 3 from mothercare which is mainly primary colours and could be for either but otherwise really you are limited to powder blue or pink

vmcd28 · 29/07/2010 15:27

can I just say, with my DS we didnt know what we were having, so it was annoying having to buy white etc, and it was lovely having people visit the hosp with boys clothes. BUT you know what, when he arrived, he suited white like you wouldnt believe, and we ended up using white (with colourful designs) for months!

Anyway, this time I've been told another Boy at a 22 week scan, but I'm actually reluctant to buy blue. We're not going to tell people it's a boy till it's born (if we can get away with it), and I certainly dont want my DS to know (age 5 - he'd tell everyone!!). So actually we're sticking to the white stuff with designs/logos on them for now.

PS Boots have half-price baby clothes just now, and although they are technically summer things, some of them are gorgeous neutral outfits

Violet5 · 29/07/2010 15:41

Thats how they confirmed my three girls at scans and they were right

Roz14 · 29/07/2010 16:03

Thanks for all your advice - it is much appreciated.

I do agree that there is not as much lemon and green clothing around at the moment Baggedandtagged, which is a little frustarting. I really like to see white on newborn babies anyway, so will reuse some of my DS white sleepsuits at first.

Thanks Vmcd28 for letting me know about the boots sale, I love any excuse to go shopping and grab a bargain.

Oh congrats GiggglewithGlee, I have a little man myself and they are wonderful. He is 3 now and is always handing out kisses and cuddles and he can't wait to help me look after the new arrival

Violet5 - did they too give you a percentage of accuracy? Do they ever say 100% or is that something they never dare do? This is the first time we have found out the sex, as we didn't ask first time around. It is nice to know that they got it right for you though based upon the 3 line theory.

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 29/07/2010 19:26

With DS she said if it's not a boy I will give up my job, so guess that's pretty much 100%. Think it's easier to be certain with boys though.

Violet5 · 30/07/2010 08:38

Hi, didn't give me a percentage of acuracy, she just said to me, 'you see those three lines, they show that babys a girl' i could see what she meant and didn't see any boy bits at all so i just took it to be certain they were girls. I've just had a 20 week scan though this time with my 6th and very last baby ! and this time sonographer just said 'i'm pretty sure thats a boy, be suprised if it wasn't' .
So i'm of for a private scan today to have it confirmed...so i can start shopping

Roz14 · 30/07/2010 09:38

Violet5 - congrats on your latest baby, I bet you are so looking forward to todays scan. Im sure that if they saw what looked like boys bits, that is what you will be getting - they dont usually mistake boys from what I have heard.

When i went for my 20 week scan, the sonography more or less told me what they told you. I hade made a comment to my husband that I could see any boys bits and she said she could not either but that is not what she was looking for. She looked for a good minute then said 'girl - you see those three white lines' and pointed out the three lines. At that point I didn't really know about the 'three lines' usually meant.

Anyway enjoy today's scan, as well as the shopping

Sorry, the above message should say that I couldn't see any boys bits

Violet5 · 30/07/2010 11:09

Thanks Roz, i am soo looking forward to scan this afternoon, i have to wait til 5pm though, so me and the kids are ticking of the hours til husband gets home and we go for the scan.
Then i have the whole weekend to shop, we know baby seems healthy at this point so thats the best bit but will be great to know for sure what we're having too

Violet5 · 30/07/2010 11:14

Oh and sorry, meant to say Congratulations and all the best with the rest of your pregnancy too, take care

DuelingFanjo · 30/07/2010 11:33

May I ask a question. If it's a boy is it quite obvious or do they still have to have a good scan around - at the 20 week scan I mean. OH is convinced her saw balls but we decided not to find out.

Violet5 · 30/07/2010 11:38

With my 2 boys even i could see they were boys. With my now 6 year old when i got his scan pics of the sonographer all she'd taken pics of was his willy because of the position he was in !! Ofcourse he thinks its hilarious when he see's them now.

Baby i'm having at the mo though only gave us a very quick glimpse, we all thought we saw something that looked like a little boys parts but having it confirmed today as i wouldn't like to have said either way.
Not much help, sorry.

anonymousbird · 30/07/2010 11:40

I was told, three lines, 90% certain, and she was indeed a glorious girl. My sonographer said they never say 100% with a girl, 90 was as good as she was every prepared to give.

I didn't ask at the 20 week scan of DS, but I gather it is usually pretty obvious... as long as they get a view of the relevant area of course!

Well done, hope the rest of your pregnancy runs smooth...

Roz14 · 30/07/2010 13:14

Thanks Violet5 - keep us posted on if the earlier scan was right. Im really excited for you. It will be 5pm before you know it!!!

anonymousbird - thanks for your feedback, sounds like both yours and my experience was very similar. I too didn't ask at the 20wk scan for my DS, so that is why I felt that i had got nothing to compare it too. The sonography did say to me that 90% was as high as she goes and then went on to say that it is the highest percentage of accuracy she had given that day. We will ahve to wait and see. I am just really excited about meeting my baby either way. I am due in 4 weeks .
