Hello my ds is 37 months old I have been trying to potty him for nearly a year! I've Bern using huggies pull up and he just use to them now. I stated off training with a mobile phone which he got on really well with but started yo demand phone all the time so I stopped that and only gave phone or tablet as a reward.if he went.

He's now stared to become hysterical when taking him now. We may get 1 wee a day in potty. I'm very embarrassed about this as he's.starting nursery in a few says.

Am I doing something wrong please help

You have to actively interact with a young child, talking with them, reading to them , talking about the pictures, not just leaving them alone with a book.

Nothing matches actual human interaction with a young child- their brains are so receptive at that age.

… yes, I know. As I said, the only thing that stopped my son being actively frightened of the toilet was allowing him to watch YouTube on it for a week or two. A great tool in my opinion

Sorry for the 37 months qoute I get it!!! He's 3 just use to saying it that way

Well i hope you’re good at maths as how many months will he be when he's 27 or 42😁

Get him off the phone and stop taking random bad advice from other mums, devices are very detrimental to the brain and emotional development of young children!!

How i trained mine may not work for you (the Gina Ford method). Maybe get help from the professional health workers? Good luck 🤞

A mum at a playgroup I attended said to use a mobile.phone while he's on the potty watching YouTube.

That’s an absolutely terrible idea!

Pull ups are the same as nappies, they won't help you potty train.

Pick a method, like oh crap or similar and follow the plan. Take a week off work to spend at home focussing fully on potty training.

Only day time as night time dryness is hormonal and can't be trained

She gave you terrible advice! It’s not an armchair it’s a small toilet. Get rid of the potty now, he’s too old for it. Put a training seat on the toilet, get a step, and go straight into pants - no pull ups!

Very good advice (it’s what i did). My kids never had a potty, they went on a normal toilet with a kids seat.

And no pants at all during the day. It can be messy but it really works. I cant remember the details but they learnt really quickly with that method after struggles with previous methods.

I think it might be helpful to ask your HV for some support with potty training in person since you have been trying for such a long time. I held off with my youngest as his speech was delayed but actually once we cracked it he just took himself to the toilet without needing to tell me.

I would get rid of the pull ups because it is essentially just a nappy. If you can't (I couldn't for one of mine) I put a pair of pants on under the nappy so no one could tell he had had an accident but he knew the feeling was unpleasant and immediately wanted to go to change. For the first day take then every half an hour but don't worry about giving a phone, they don't need to be on the toilet for ages. If they don't pee then just try again next time. For bowels if you see any signs that they are starting to move just head straight to the toilet and I always put mine on the toilet in the evening while running their bath and often caught a bowel movement.

I personally would ditch the potty at 3. I never really understood the idea of them but a 3 yo can easy get up to the toilet with a wee stool. Do lots of modelling...make sure he sees you at the toilet and my boys loved to practice flushing.

Also it sounds like it's been a challenge for you, try to take a bit of the pressure off, he is really not that delayed at all. I can see how hard you are trying. My gran who had 4 boys always said she would never train a boy before 2y7m and it certainly worked for my boys.

A cuddly toy with underpants on, sit on potty and play games, oh look, "the cookie monster is having a big boy/girl wee." Also bribe with stickers and chocolate. Make such a huge fuss with any wees on the potty. You could also consider a kids' toilet seat for the actual toilet. Some kids take to those better from the get-go. Ultimately, you know your child the best.

I think that if you think he is ( or might be) ready you should just put him in pants and go for it. Reward with buttons or similar. Don't go back to nappies , apart from at night as it is confusing. If , after a few days or a week you are making no progress go back to nappies and give it a couple of months. Quite a few 3 year olds are not day time trained so don't feel bad .

I wonder if there is an issue with interoception. Perhaps he simply does not know he needs to go until the absolute last minute, which is why he is struggling to communicate in advance. Have nursery/preschool been able to offer any advice? I second the suggestion of taking a look at the ERIC website, there are some good articles on there which might help.

'My 37 month old?'

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

WhatMe123 · 01/01/2025 17:25

Just wait op. No harm in waiting as you're making it worse by stressing and forcing it. Dd2 refused and we waited and waited and one day aged 3 and a half she decided to wear knickers and was dry that day, job done 😁

Mine is the same and a similar age… the nursery actually gave up and put him in the class where everyone else needs to be potty trained!!!

I’m in a similar situation, what training pants do you use ?

Hello the training pants I bought are pictured below, I tried to include a link but I must have made a mistake as my post was deleted.
The pants cost £25 for a pack of 6 which is expensive, but they're really making a big difference for us. And they wash and tumble really well.
