When did you child stop wearing nappies at night?

DS (turned 4 in August) has been dry at night for months. 2 weeks ago he said he didn't want to wear a nappy anymore. He's done really well, however the last 3 out of 4 nights he's had an accident (shout out to the Silent Night waterproof mattress protector - great product!).

When did your child/ren become dry at night? I'm not sure if we've been premature in not wearing nappies but he's done so well over the last few months we felt he was more than ready.

Very varied
DS1 was 2 and a half
DS2 was just before 2nd birthday
DD was 9 years old no SN just couldn't get it

beachdays27 · 08/10/2023 23:28

Immediately after potty training age 2, which I wasn't at all expecting, and which just confirmed to me that you can't teach it, it's hormonal, just have to wait until they're ready.

Delphinium20 · 08/10/2023 23:29

Both my DDs potty trained during the day very easily at age 2. Like in one day. No day accidents. Nights were very different. Oldest DD was 9 when she no longer needed pullups, youngest DD was 7. My girls just didn't wake up - they'd sleep right through it. My pediatrician had no concerns and said some kids just take longer. I wouldn't worry about it.

Louisa4987 · 08/10/2023 23:30

Both my daughters potty trained at between 2 and 2.5 and were dry at night without trying within a few weeks of being dry in the day.

My son was reliably dry in the day by 2.5 but still soaks a nappy at night.

Gro · 08/10/2023 23:32

DD dry in the day at just turned 2 dry at night at past 10

DS dry day and night at 3

Night urination is controlled by a hormone which has or has not kicked in. They can't control it, it isn't laziness.

DramaAlpaca · 08/10/2023 23:33

DS1 wasn't reliably dry at night until he was 9. He was such a deep sleeper he couldn't wake up. DS2 was around 8, for the same reason. We didn't use pull-ups, just layered their beds and had dry pyjamas handy - the least fuss the better. They were both dry during the day between two and two and a half.

DS3, on the other hand, was dry at night as soon as he was dry in the day, at two and a half. That was a surprise.

SausageMonkey2 · 08/10/2023 23:35

My eldest - nearly 5.5

my youngest - just after being 2.

can’t teach it, can’t promote it. Just happens

apric0t · 08/10/2023 23:35

5 year old still sleeping in nappies here, very rare dry night maybe once a month.

Whalewatchers · 08/10/2023 23:40

7 yr old in nappies at night, uses it 4/5 nights.

Just wondering what that mattress protector is like, is it plasticky? I co sleep with my DC and it was SO ridiculously hot in the bed with a waterproof protector on, not comfortable at all, that I had to take it off.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 08/10/2023 23:46

Dd was 3 and a bit, declared she wasn't wearing a nappy anymore, ds was 6.5.

UndercoverCop · 08/10/2023 23:46

DS dry in the day by 2 and 4 months (I know it was before Easter because we had a long car trip and I was really paranoid he'd fall asleep and forget he wasn't in nappies anymore!) Nights were around the same time but we kept him in a pull up for a couple of months overnight to be sure as he's a heavy sleeper. My understanding is that night time is hormonal so you can't train it, it just clicks when it clicks.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 08/10/2023 23:48

I am quite reassured by some of these responses. Ds is nearly 4, hasn't needed a daytime nappy for going on 12 months but still wears a pull up every night. No clue when he won't need one either....

Deadringer · 08/10/2023 23:49

In birth order,
3.5,
just under 4,
just under 3,
4
9.5.

iatealltheminieggs · 08/10/2023 23:49

My eldest DD was 5.5. She wasn't reliably dry in the day until nearly 4.

My youngest potty trained within days of her 2nd birthday but wets a pull-up every night without fail and she's nearly 5.5 now. I think we are in for a bit more of a wait with her. Even lifting her to go to the toilet makes no difference so I don't bother anymore. She'll get it when she's ready.

angelispink · 08/10/2023 23:50

Both of mine stopped wearing nappies at night at 2.5ish, not long after they stopped wearing them during the day. We didn’t do any training we were just lucky that they seemed to be ready.

I do remember one of them then went through a phase of wetting the bed for a few nights in a row, but then she went back to normal again.

Marblessolveeverything · 08/10/2023 23:57

Both just after two, whenever I had two weeks off. My eldest is 16 and back then most people trained for day and night together. My youngest is 10 and I did the same.

I know it is hormone related but if he managed three out of four nights I would say it looks like it will be successful.

The only time they wet was if UTI or had a slushy whatever is in them doesn't agree with them.

Ladyj84 · 09/10/2023 00:06

Twin girls will be 2 in a couple of weeks they've been nappy free about 3 months but 3 year old boy nappy free day times still wears one at night as some nights still has accidents

AlltheFs · 09/10/2023 00:21

DD was potty trained at her 2nd birthday, at just turned 4 she is dry at night >95% of the time but refuses to give up the pull ups. She gets absolutely hysterical if she has an accident at night - we tried no pull ups for a while but she had nightmares about having accidents so reverted back for now.

She is almost always dry, usually wakes for a wee if needed (but usually doesn’t need one) but she obviously doesn’t feel ready so I am leaving her be for now. We have reverted to very cheap pull ups as they are rarely wet (did cloth nappies and then eco pull ups originally) which I feel marginally guilty about the waste element. But aside from that I can’t see the harm. I think she will ditch them in the next year.

I think she is producing the hormone though so think it’s just a dependency now.

thaisweetchill · 09/10/2023 09:25

Thank you everyone for your replies, such a range of ages. I had heard it was hormonal which clearly has been confirmed by the responses.

We're not concerned just not sure whether to buy more nappies when he's having more dry nights than wet, he also wanted to stop wearing them as he 'wanted to be a big boy like friend'.

@Whalewatchers best way I can describe the feel of it is like a nappy, a bit crinkly but definitely not plastic. We put a normal bed sheet over it so it is comfy to sleep on.

I think mine were both 4. They were both about a year after they stopped needing them in the day

CornishGem1975 · 09/10/2023 09:40

My DS is 3.5 and still firmly in a nappy at night, it's so heavy in the morning that tells me he's just not ready yet.

Same here.

SkyeBlue28 · 09/10/2023 10:03

It was different with both of my children.
DD1 was dry by day at 3 and a half and dry at night about two weeks later
DD2 was also dry by day at 3 and a half but was 4 plus 4 months when she was dry at night.

I think they were on the older side with potty training. I had tried earlier but they weren’t ready. They never have accidents at night luckily. It varies so much between child.

SquigglePigs · 09/10/2023 10:07

My DD is coming up on 5 and is still in pull-ups at night. She was dry in the day at 2.5yrs old. I figure it'll happen when it happens.
