Hello
Im not officiall potty training but since my DS was 1yr old, Ive been putting him on potty when he wakes up in the morning as thats when he passes stool and rather than doing it in nappy, I thought would be good idea for him to do on potty. Which he does almost everyday. However he cries a lot when hes about to pass stool. I hold his hand and tell him Im there. But he gets so upset. He isnt constipated and has plenty of water , fruits and veg in his diet but cries alot. Cries for a min or so after hes done. Then he is ok.
He also cries if he ever does it in nappy unless its a tiny bit.
Not sure what to do.

Id stop putting him on the potty and let him do it in peace in his nappy.

abyssofwoah · 27/08/2023 17:35

I’d take him to the GP to get treated for constipation. He must be in discomfort, so even though he’s managing to pass a poo, it must be quite hard. Some movicol will help soften things up. Having dealt with a long term withholding issue, you want you head that off as early as possible.

BoohooWoohoo · 27/08/2023 17:36

Stop the potty.
Lots of kids are scared of that letting go sensation and it will be much easier if you wait until he's much older. You don't want him to start holding it in and developing constipation.

Tired6789 · 27/08/2023 17:39

Stop the potty and see if still crying. If he is then give lots of prunes, fruit, water etc. If still carries on ask about movicol as pp said. Even if poo doesn't seem that hard it can hurt them and the risk is they start withholding and things escalate.

Putting him on the potty isnt the issue. He cries even when doing it in nappy . I put him on potty as I know when hes about to go. Doing it on potty isnt the issue 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️.

Have you been giving rewards? Reading to him? Get him a potty book from the library. Even put him in front of the tv or give him screen whilst doing it

Is no one reading my original post 🤷‍♀️ he cries when passing stool. Whether its in nappy or in potty. He cries even more when its in nappy uniil its opened and cleaned as anyone would be uncomfortable because of that.

He's crying because you've made the whole thing traumatic no matter whether it's in a nappy or on a potty: and his age is absolutely ridiculous for you to even introduce a potty 🙈🙈

3rdtimemumma · 27/08/2023 22:38

I'm not sure if this will work at his age, but if he can blow bubbles from a bubble wand you can try this when he's pooing. It relaxes the sphincter muscle and might stop the pain. Otherwise, just lots of water, actually being careful he's not having too much insoluble fibre (e.g. too much weetabix/ banana), but has softer fruits etc. I'd certainly take to docs to discuss. He could have overflow constipation. Also if anxiety as on potty so young, this could easily transfer to nappy too. So stopping using the potty could still help.

No. They saw the potty and his age and their judgey pants got pulled up so high it covered their eyes and they couldn't see the rest.

If he's uncomfortable pooing you need to take him to see your GP.

Has he always cried when pooing? Or is it new? When did it start?

NuffSaidSam · 27/08/2023 22:43

The other thing to do is make sure he's in a comfortable position so whether on the potty or in a nappy he needs to be in the squat position. If he's on the potty try putting something under his feet, so his knees are higher, like he's squatting.

Don't be ridiculous.

I read the original post. The reason I said what I said is because my daughter was the same and distracting her with the aforementioned things worked very well.

You were struggling and we all offered support. Youre being very ungrateful.

Previous generations would have done this - why is it ridiculous?

Don't ask this - you'll be accused of not reading the original post

@MiniCooperLover clearly you have very limited knowledge. How does a mother traumatise her child in this way plz enlighten me? Our mothers made us sit on potty from an early age and many cultures start from 5 or 6months of age. So plz if you dont have anything nice to say plz leave this forum and go vent out ur frustration somewhere else.

If it tied in with stopping formula, try increasing his fluid intake as well.

But also, do see a doctor. It's not normal for a baby to cry everytime they pass a stool and it should be checked.

Im not being ungrateful. I just replied to your post. I do try to appreciate him when he is done and sometimes blow bubbles to make him happy. I have fidget spinner toys stuck near where he sits so that he can play .helps distract him a bit. I guess he just needs extre fibre as per some posts here. Sorry if you felt i was being umgrateful but that was not my intention.
