Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

@babycornplease We kept the potty with us all the time for the first week. We’re now just over 2 weeks in, I think? and I’d say we’re done. DS goes to the bathroom for the potty/toilet with child seat by himself, and is wearing either trousers or trousers and underwear. We take the potty out and about, and he’s even been dry overnight twice. So keep going!

babycornplease · 11/04/2020 16:08

@Iris243 the thought of your dd going into the playhouse and closing the door Grin made me proper giggle!

Thanks for the breakdown of the oh crap method. We had a tiny breakthrough as she said she needed a poo, then stood and did a wee, managed to plonk her on the potty for the second half, gave her lots of praise and put a sticker on her chart, felt all smug! About ten mins later she did a massive full on wee on the patio 🤦‍♀️

Our toilet is all the way upstairs so got potties downstairs, one inside and one outside... got the playhouse out, sandpit our, scooter out, but she's just climbing the walls... guess she's sick of the sight of me at the moment, and I can't say I blame her.

So as I posted earlier, progress not perfection has come back to bite me on the bum this afternoon! Total resistance on day 4! Tells me he wants the potty, we get to the loo and he won’t sit down! Then back a forth 3 times until he sets himself. It’s like he wants to go but then remembers that’s he’s a mardy 2 year old and kicks off......tomorrow is another day. I’m not giving up, I think he’ll be worse if I leave it longer and he’s quite strong willed........big gin and tonic needed tonight!

Iris243 · 11/04/2020 20:52

@Iris243 the thought of your dd going into the playhouse and closing the door grin made me proper giggle!

It was so funny, she did it while we were in the house too she just wanted complete privacy. Luckily we seem to have avoided any weird toddler only pooping in the playhouse stubbornness!

I think my little girl must be so bored of me too. She loves nursery, so not going 3 days a week is a huge challenge.

Night training is a while off as DD is 21 months but she is still having a bottle at night so that’s going to be our next obstacle to fix.

Joywillcomeagain · 12/04/2020 13:09

Omg I've missed every wee today she hasn't pooed yet. It's like waiting for a disgusting bomb to go off ConfusedGrin

fascinated · 12/04/2020 14:36

Yeah, first poo in potty! He is so happy! He likes us to clap him ;-)

babycornplease · 12/04/2020 15:54

Just had her first proper big wee in the potty, seems it's a good day all round!

babycornplease · 12/04/2020 16:12

And five minutes later, a POO!!! She looked very pleased with herself, and brought it in the potty to show me! I never thought I would be this excited about poo!!! Grin

fascinated · 12/04/2020 16:53

Yay to all our little ones! It’s v satisfying isn’t it?! Tbh our nappy changes had got so fraught that I am thinking least worst option.....!

flowerstar19 · 12/04/2020 17:02

I have found my people! We are doing this with DS2 now and it somehow is making lockdown feel worthwhile - at least we will have achieved something... When he does a wee on the potty he shouts 'everyone' and we all run and congratulate him! He's pretty much cracked it which is awesome. I even threw away the changing mat last week!!

fascinated · 12/04/2020 17:50

My little one is getting pretty consistent with pees, and the nappy he had had on for exercise was dry... he went to the potty straight away after it was taken off. Happy!

also so cute that the older one is helping by running in to let me know that lo had said “toilet” and needed to go... he’s really cute how he is supporting his wee sibling

Joywillcomeagain · 12/04/2020 18:54

We've had two pees in the potty now!! All the watching was worth it. Also downloaded the oh crap! book. So worth it. I feel I have a plan, I was faffing about pants on pants off, dresses on and off, sometimes toilet sometimes potty. All that led to was tears and a giant poo on my (carpeted ... long story) bathroom floor. Envy when we get a poo in there I'll be ecstatic Grin

LunaHardy · 12/04/2020 19:20

Sounds like everyone is getting on really well 😍 babycorn, my dd started awfully and I started to doubt that she was ready at all despite showing all the signs. We are about day 6 now (lost track!) and have nailed the wees! I am reminding every hour or so but he has self initiated many times (even when playing in the garden). She's been wearing knickers and can pull them down to go for a wee but insists on taking them fully off instead of just down! We are 3 days no accidents now and feeling quite positive!

Still no poops on the potty yet, she seems to be waiting for a nappy for that. She always been very private with it - any tips?

Joy will - yes, I’ve downloaded too. Was unsure about details. She is v firm isn’t she?! Makes sense so far tho, am only a few chapters in so far...

Good news baby corn!

fascinated · 12/04/2020 20:22

Luna i mean!

babycornplease · 13/04/2020 11:11

Well we've had one wee in the potty this morning, she was playing on my phone and didn't even seem to notice she had done it... I'm worried that she's too distracted by the phone to realise what she's done... made a big fuss of her and put another sticker on the chart...

What do you guys do with them whilst they are on the potty?

Iris243 · 13/04/2020 13:16

Hows it going for everyone?

Day 5 and having a few wee accidents, especially when she’s busy doing something. She did have a poo accident but tbh it was my fault as she said pee pee poo whilst stuck on the stairs and i didn’t get her to potty in time.

How many accidents are normal? Just wondering as Dd is only 21 months so I am doing this fairly early.

She has mostly been good at making the potty. I do worry I have pushed her into it too soon though.

Joywillcomeagain · 13/04/2020 13:51

The best result I've had was I popped her on and walked away saying "mummy doesn't mind if you can't go she's proud of you for trying"'and she peed a treat. Really hard not to pressure them and be casual about it but it does work.

Saying that she did poo on the kitchen floor earlier. She sneaks the poops out when I'm not looking for a second 😰

LunaHardy · 13/04/2020 18:37

My "oh crap" book came today and it's been really helpful. I've been reading the poop chapter as we seem to have nailed the wee's but not a single poop on the potty yet, she is holding on to it and waiting for nappy at bedtime. Which isn't ideal as it's delaying bedtime. I read that they find the nappy secure and comforting as it's all they've known for 2 years or so. Pooping without a nappy and in front of everyone feels very exposed and they feel the need to do it in private. I read that if you wait for poo cues and pop them on the potty, tell them you need to go and get something from the other room, leave them on the potty, they normally go.

Hellohello2020 · 13/04/2020 18:57

Well yesterday my husband tried nappy free, and she did 4 wees not on the potty and nothing on the potty, even when interrupted. With nappies on she goes through phases of doing most businessl in potty, then nearly nothing. I have done ec since 6 months, where I've offered potty after nap time. I'm wandering if that was a bad Idea now. My daughter is 21 months first.

YukoandHiro · 13/04/2020 19:01

@iris284 god knows but we're still having daily accidents two weeks in. 32 months. I'm so over it!

fascinated · 13/04/2020 21:37

Hello hello the oh crap book mentioned has a whole section on EC and how it differs slightly , and you need to see potty training as a different thing to EC. You have a head start at least knowing cues!

fascinated · 13/04/2020 21:38

Lots of accidents normal in first few days, if still having lots after quite a while then worth going back to basics and checking they have understood all the steps etc.

EmbarrassingMama · 14/04/2020 08:18

We're on Day 5! Day 1-3 totally naked and managed about 3 wees in the potty each day, plus a poo on the floor on Day 3. He looked so surprised, bless him!

Yesterday one wee in the morning, plus a poo in the potty in the afternoon! Someone said they had something similar on here (forgot the username, sorry!), which was that before a poo their LO walked back and forth to the potty about 10 times. Same for us yesterday, I think the sensation was totally new to him and he didn't really know what was about to happen.

Day 1-3 naked, Day 4 clothes on and a walk around the block with two accidents at home in his shorts (wee only), so the clothes on is the new stumbling block! But overall really pleased we took the leap.

Thanks for all the support on here!

fascinated · 14/04/2020 09:40

We had a lesson in pushing trousers down and up this morning. When not needing to go. Realised had never explicitly taught him before. He loved it! And then he went straight to the potty for a peepee!
