DD (aged 2) used the potty to dirty!

I am so pleased. She has been pretty good at wetting the potty for a few months but has refused to dirty it, preferring to go in her nappy at bedtime or in her knickers.

Just now she felt herself dirtying so went to the potty. I am so pleased I could cry, it's been such a pain dealing with the dirty knickers and clothes over the past week because she's been dirtying constantly when playing outside.

Hooray for progress!

Do you mean she used the potty to do a poo in? If so, then that's great! Congratulations to your dd.

I have to say that I've never heard the phrase "to dirty". I think I would prefer my dd not to think of a basic bodily function as being dirty. Smile

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 18:33

Yes, that is what I mean, but I am prim and so don't use that word. Wink

And it IS dirty, for all that it's a basic human function. I don't want it anywhere but in the potty/toilet, so dirt seems appropriate to me. Smile

I am pleased for your DD Grouchy - please change your terminology...having a poo isn't dirty. Plus it's not as if you are calling it a 'dump' / 'shit' or 'turd' Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 18:42

Yeah, nah.

I'm work with many children who have huge issues around pooing, so we spend a great deal of time trying to "normalise" it and take away the fear of it being dirty or unpleasant. Calling it "dirty" couldn't be further away from the approach that we take.

Your dd may have been preferring to do it in her nappy or pants if you've been telling her it's dirty as she may not want to risk seeng it in a toilet.

I'm glad she's done one poo on the toilet, and I hope it continues for you.

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 19:56

Many approaches work for different children. She's only 2 + 3 months. HV said it was completely normal for children to start with wetting the potty and dirtying nappies/pants when they start training.

For us, the term dirtying is just a continuation of how we talked about her nappies. She's used to it, it's normal phrasing. She usually comes to the bathroom with me, and looks in the toilet when I'm finished. She's not bothered by it, and now she's getting the idea that the potty is for both wetting and dirtying. Seems fine to me.

And considering the way she plays in the garden, dirt really isn't an issue for her.

It's not dirty. It's normal . Your terminology of will lead her to feel embarrassed about it later on.

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 20:07

It's normal and it (itself, not the action) is dirty. Faeces are dirty. Obviously defecating is good because it gets that dirt out of your body.

She'll be fine. Move along.

Weird.

MysweetAudrina · 18/06/2014 20:13

Poo is not a nice word either it is never use to describe something nice and fragrant surely its not a million miles from dirty?

dietcokeandcadburys · 18/06/2014 20:16

'dirty'? are you for real, it's called pooing.

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 20:18

It's called dirtying in my house. You can call it what you like in yours. Everyone's happy, and peace reigneth upon the earth once more.

OP posts:
Itsfab · 18/06/2014 20:23

Obviously fine to do what you want in your house but in the real world calling it ^ might be a problem.

And you definitely DO NOT sound prim ConfusedHmm.

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 20:25

Emphasis on the word might.

You sound like an utter loon!

Badvoc2 · 18/06/2014 20:28

Just tell her it's chocolate fondant :)
I needed a laugh today, thanks!

TenMinutesEarly · 18/06/2014 20:29

Oh god my mum used to call a poo a motion and I hated it. Dirty is just weird. Just call it poo and get over it.

HaroldLloyd · 18/06/2014 20:30

How many times can I see dirty on one thread.

Do you really say I'm going to do a dirty?

What on earth do you call a fart?

HaroldLloyd · 18/06/2014 20:30

A motion! Ahahahahaha.

potatofactory · 18/06/2014 20:31

'Move along' is so rude. Confused

GrouchyKiwi · 18/06/2014 20:32

I don't say what I'm going to do when I go to the bathroom. I didn't realise adults were in the habit of announcing their toileting requirements.

I call a fart "passing wind".

And yes, I know I'm weird, I just don't give a shit.

HaroldLloyd · 18/06/2014 20:33

Your grumpy.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 18/06/2014 20:33

To dirty? Yuck. Ridiculous phrasing.

picnicbasketcase · 18/06/2014 20:33

BM or number two are recognisable terms, plus are still quite prim but less judgemental.

Bunbaker · 18/06/2014 20:36

I will never think of the film Dirty Dancing in the same way again
