Had a good week and now regressed argh!

Had a good week of training with my DD who is 2.2. Got every poo in for a week after the first couple days. Wees still loads of accidents but wasn't bothered as she's just learning the muscle control and it's early days. Got her in training pants/knickers/bare bum at home and pull ups at night and when out.

Seem to have regressed since Tuesday! Now doesn't like going on the toilet (was using a training seat as she doesn't like the potty at all) and two days in a row says she needs a poo, but won't go on the toilet and then goes on the floor and announces 'i did it on the floor!'.

not helped by mother in law constantly texting and saying how's it going how's it going...? argh!

give up/carry on/try a new tactic??

wasn't overly bothered about when we did it but since she nailed it in a week feel like i need to crack on....

help!

I am also training dd 2.3, she has had 5 days so far and days 1-4 saw it getting better and better but today - disaster - she has had 1 success and 6 accidents (all wee) - no poo yet but we 've not mastered that anyway. I wondered whether to carry on or not (have started a thread to stop or not to stop before I saw this!) - but I feel we have come this far might as well carry on. Maybe try sitting in front of TV with potty or with a book - I know that is timing rather than training but just to get her back happy sitting on whichever.
Anyway saw you posted this friday - so you have already decided - what did you do? Happy to support each other through!

SukieQ · 06/02/2012 19:47

I decided to crack on. The week of poo-success plus having another one due in May makes me feel like, we've come this far, let's go for it. Decided after a week of wiping poo off the floor (week 2 which followed the week of success in week 1) that we'd persevere but trying to keep my sense of humour and not get stressed. I think she maybe got bored with me asking every 5 seconds 'do you need the potty?' so I'm trying to get on as normal, keep an eye on her, and see how we go. It feels like 1 step forward 2 steps back though! But, she has definitely got the hang of knowing when a poo is coming and over the weekend got back on the toilet, with the help of doing a load of puzzle books while she sat there. She seems to be getting the hang of knowing when a wee is coming (so this is progress!), but then pretty much refuses to sit on the toilet and does it in her knickers. I'm just rolling with that for now as par for the course. And we're venturing out on short trips (basically trying to time trips around accidents/successes/movements) only in knickers and just using the pull ups at night and naps. It was getting confusing I think with the switching up, so I've just resigned myself to cleaning up accidents. But I guess this is progress? No accidents out, and the weekend felt like progress with getting back on the loo and getting some wees and poos willingly in, but today was more accidents than not.....I shall soldier on!! This was a bit of a rant sorry.

Any ideas on how to get her to sit down for a wee? And is this all normal? Or is this all bad? I have no idea what I'm doing.

Well done for keeping at it firstly! I don't blame you as I feel I have started so need to continue - although I did have a false start a couple of months ago. Your experience sounds exactly like ours so I hope we are both normal but I also feel as if I haven't a clue what I am doing. I find that I ask if she needs a wee -she says no and often is doing one a few moments later so in my heart I think she doesn't know when one is coming but she is keen to do it and likes the potty etc so I feel I ought to see it through. We had 10 accidents in total today! I dont know how you feel about chocolate bribery but I use milky bar stars so if she refuses to sit on potty I say she can have one (if she is willing I don't mention them so I only use less than a mini pack a day). She then gets a sticker if she produces something which is rare. We use brightbots (I think they are called) training pants for going out which are basically towelling knickers which hold one wee but let the child know they are wet so more like underwear than pull-ups. We use pull-ups at night though ( even though she is dry at night would you believe!). I have only left the house once but am going to start as I am going crazy! However I am writing this week off pretty much and will then decide at the weekend whether to continue if things are no better. A friend told me she had a fortnight of hell and then it clicked so I am clinging to that. From what I can work out from friends it takes a while unless they have led the way and decided they are ready for themselves. If you decided to "train" as such then it is a longer process.
It does sound as if you are making progress though so good luck and hopefully we can report some successes each soon!

SukieQ · 06/02/2012 21:01

Well done to you too. I'm full on for bribery. We're going with stickers and then a cheap toy from the pound shop if she gets 7 wees or poos. I was holding to hope with the "one/two weeks" and it clicks thing but we're in week 2/3 now so I'm trying not to beat myself up! I think we're making progress. I think. She'll yell "my poop is coming!" it's just 20 x it's not quite there and then she trots off the loo again, and then the 21st time she doesn't quite make it. This is the accidents. The successes she'll get it in and I have to hide my jubilance. And with the wees there's just not quite the muscle control (they only get there if she's already there) but I think she's getting better at that as she does know when one is coming now. Despite the disaster day today (3 accidents no success - this kid can hold her wee for hours, i had no idea) tomorrow is a new day. We shall try again. I kind of feel like I'll confuse her if I give up, and I had no idea how time consuming it was so I want to crack on before I'm suddenly breastfeeding again (in 3.5 months and counting)....I've never even house broken a dog so I just don't know what on earth I am doing. Oh well. No news there in my motherhood experience, I've been like that for 2.3 years now! Keep me posted. I'll do the same. I like the moral support.

We are still travelling pretty much the same route as you. Total was better though - 5 accidents and 3 successes - she wees alot and this was a quiet day! It is only happening if I persuade her to sit at the moment - she certainy doesnt ask to go (except just the once). I started a thread called to stop or not and a poster on there said perhaps I was expecting too much and i think she was right so I am going to ease up my expectations and just see what happens. Definitely crack on I say as it would be a nightmare with breastfeeding - my baby is 8 months and I keep having to stop mid feeding him, luckily he is a placid little thing but nonetheless it takes most of your time and you just wont have it with a new baby. Also they say not to train with a new baby in the house and I certainly found my dd wanted to be babied when ds came along (carried etc) so I bet training her then would have been even harder. She also was dead clingy whilst I fed baby so I could imagine lots of fake saying she needed to go! You have time to get it all in place now and your dd sounds like she is moving in the right direction! How was today?

SukieQ · 07/02/2012 20:25

Glad you had a better day! I am still in the "crack on" mentality, and good points re: new baby. It is still a one step forward, 2 back kind of thing with us, but today was a forward day so I feel more optimistic. One poo in the toilet, 2 wee accidents on the floor, one wee in her pull-up when asleep. I'll take it. I'm focusing on the poo. She knows where it's meant to go, she yell's "my poop is coming" and she can get on and off. Usually gets on the loo 10 x in 10 minutes before she says "my poop is actually coming this time" (i found that funny) but we got it in, job done. I tried to back off today and didn't ask her if she needed to go but let her take the lead, that seemed better than yesterday when she pood her pants even though she knew it was coming. When she said she had to go, I'd say OK off you go and let her at it, and stay in the other room. Attempting to make it her thing. She has a bladder the size of a race horse so the accidents are less just because she goes less. No control there and no chance of getting it in the toilet yet, because she doesn't know it's coming until 1 second before the puddle, but I'm ok with cleaning that up for now. Keeping her in training pants at home and on short trips out, figure that feeling she's wet, will sooner or later help her realise how she feels just before she get's wet?? I'm making this up as I go but what else can you do?!

hello - just checking in - typically she woke up today with a cold and conjunctivitis so I was thinking it would be awful but actually same tally as yesterday but she asked to go to wee today which is a step up so maybe we are moving in the right direction! I also am hoping we get to recognise the wee signal too - apart from the one time today and one a few days ago she usually tells me when she has been and still tells me she doesnt need to go and then does on floor! i tied myself up in knots initally reading all the books that all advise different so now I am just winging it! Also feel come to far to stop now so the only way is forward! How was your day?

SukieQ · 09/02/2012 14:17

Pretty similar here! She was with my MiL yesterday and woke up a bit coldy today. She's seems pretty convinced of where the poo goes, even though yesterday they had one half in toilet half down her legs but hey the intention was there! Trying to make the most of these puddles all over the floor and hope she gets the idea with the wees sooner or later!

just a quickie so you know we are still at it! - dd packed with cold still so not a very successful day - 7 accidents but feel I cant base any idea on progress until cold has gone - flipping typical! She did at least say again today that she needed a wee when I asked her and indeed she did - so that bit is coming!

SukieQ · 09/02/2012 22:48

Likewise here! All accidents no success! But she tried but was so lethargic and tired we ended up on the sofa watching Elmo and she couldn't make it to the loo in time! ....

OP posts:
cuggles · 10/02/2012 09:39

ha - exactly the same - she fell asleep on me in front of Peppa Pig and weed all over me - so nice to have someone with me through this fun process!!!

SukieQ · 11/02/2012 12:58

oh we are so there with you! she's got some little bug so is a bit hot and whingey and lethargic, which keeps resulting in nap/nappie poos despite her best intentions! derailed for a couple days but we soldier on...

Can I join your support thread? Our DD is 2.8 and we started last Tuesday. She's at nursery, and all her little friends are training / trained, so after discussion with her key carer, we decided to go for it.

Am a little frustrated now but not with her, only with myself for unrealistic intentions! Not sure why, but I thought it would be easy. My DD seemingly has a bladder the size of a racehorse too, consequently there aren't many accidents but the frustrating bit is there are no successes yet at home. She's managed a few times at nursery (wees only) but it still seems like she hasn't twigged the 'wee is coming' sensation.

Don't want to confuse her by stopping so will stick it out. Back to nursery tomorrow, so hopefully will have some progress. Nursery tell me she's doing well with it so I guess I have to listen to them. It's really helpful reading your posts!

SukieQ · 12/02/2012 14:28

join by all means! we're still buggy, both of us just up from a 2 hour nap. i don't know if i'm kidding myself but i think she's making progress even though we're not having much success! ahhh ignorance :) she tells me when she needs to wee now, although she usually calls it poo, but I can't convince her to sit on the loo for those. need to work on that. she'll sit down for poos just haven't had much luck there owing to naps/illness/being out in the last couple days. I have used this period to convince myself the poos are sorted. how I'll be reminded tomorrow of my idiocy! (Her bladder retention is massive, she woke up pretty much dry, didn't say she needed to wee until 930 despite having some juice and drinking all the milk on her cereal, made a few weak attempts to get the loo, kept changing her mind, then finally got caught short at 10am. how she holds it so long is beyond me... yet can't hold it 5 seconds to get to the loo.) anyway, we crack on, more accidents than successes for sure for last couple days with this cold, but convince myself there's a silver lining!

Not a great day here. A little tummy bug getting in the way, perhaps? 5 accidents, no interest in doing anything in potty. Will chat to nursery tomorrow but she's definitely regressed. A tad depressed today, to be honest!

SukieQ · 12/02/2012 18:20

aw bad luck. go with the flow, so to speak. we've had a better day today then the past few. two separate successes a wee and a poo. but it always seems 1 step forward 2 back for us so we'll see how tomorrow goes. welcome to vent here! hope tomorrow goes better.

OP posts:
cuggles · 12/02/2012 19:15

hi - welcome Zingzilla - as you will see from the other posts it is all about one step forward and one back and soooo hard - I cannot believe some people sail through! I was all ready to give up this morning as bad day yesterday - only one success and three accidents by 11 am this morning then suddenly for the rest of today she has asked to go and actually gone - we have made huge progress but as SukieQ says - tomorrow is another day so I am not getting my hopes up. We did have one big incident though as we went out for sunday lunch and she told me she needed a poo -great she held it in as we went to the toilet and went successfully (this was our first ever poo success) anyway I put on her knickers and tights and we were just leaving the toilets when she said "it is still coming" and sure enough.... then I cleaned that up, got new knickers and tights on and she weed! - all in one toilet trip but least I feel more confident that I can manage out of house disasters! Tomorrow we are visiting grandad and going shopping for the day so goodness knows what will happpen! Anyway chin up ZZ, well done for today Sukie and fingers crossed to all of us!!!

zingzillachinchilla · 12/02/2012 20:40

Thanks sukie & cuggles - so true about one step forward, 25 steps back! Definitely helpful to hear how your DC are getting on. Back to nursery for DD tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes! Am staying positive, or trying v hard to. I agree - how is it possible that some folks sail through?? Good luck with tomorrow - reporting back soon

zingzillachinchilla · 12/02/2012 20:41

Forgot to say, finished day with 5 accidents and no successes in potty... boo!

SukieQ · 13/02/2012 14:33

ooh cuggles, i'd chalk that outing up as major success!! well done. i'm avoiding restaurants because she says every 5 seconds she needs a poo just for something to do, so i can't sit down. we're keeping the momentum going here but resorting to full on bribery. she weed in to loo by telling us she needed to for the first time yesterday and then announced "where's my treat?!". some friends have been telling me how their 16 and 23 mo old boys are training themselves and i'm like wtf i thought girls were meant to be easier!?

OP posts:
zingzillachinchilla · 13/02/2012 19:47

SukieQ - laughing lots at your DD demanding her treat! Too funny! Sounds like she's got the hang of it! Better day today for my DD - one wee accident at nursery and the rest were all on target in the loo at nursery. Got her home and she was dry until bathtime, and I popped her on the potty and asked if she'd show mummy how to do a wee; she promptly produced a wee in the potty and looked at me witheringly as if to say 'can't believe you haven't worked out how to do this'!!! Thank goodness it was a better day today, I went to bed last night convinced we were trying too early. Fingers crossed for tomorrow - as you've all said before - one day at a time...

cuggles · 13/02/2012 20:04

oh well done ZingZillachinchilla - a major success day I would say! SukieQ - we too are on the bribery train - she gets on toilet for two milkyway stars - says she wants more, I say no - she gets off and a minute later announces the need to go again and says "two stars please" - I cross my fingers the manipulation is a sign of intelligence! Today we went out with Grandad and I was dreading it - he nearly died of embarrassment when my newborn baby puked (just milk I add) all over homebase - But one wee whilst lunching in m&s and no accidents - I could not believe it! We did have one accident (poo) in house before we left though and two (wee) on our return but hey - at least we had a good trip!
Tomorrow is another day.....

SukieQ · 13/02/2012 20:10

too funny. sounds like successful days on your parts! well done! I have sent my partner to costcutter to stock up on cheap toy treats since she's got dentist tomorrow and i felt guilty about the mass consumption of chocolate buttons! mediocre day here = morning poo and wee in loo, a poo accident in nap/nappy, and a wee dribble in her training pants. actually i'll call that success because we're well further on than when we started. baby steps!

OP posts:
cuggles · 13/02/2012 21:17

That is definitely success SukieQ!
