Intense shivering in the middle of the night

Hi all

Don't know if anyone's experienced this before? I haven't had anything like this before with my DS1.

Baby is 8 days old, last night woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I was in the Antarctic. Never ever felt so cold in all my life, then I was shaking uncontrollably for probably 5 minutes on and off, then had hot sweats then fell back to sleep.

What on earth could this of been? It scared the life out of me. My c section wound is fine, I am trying to breast feed but I have no redness/pain with them. X

Since then I feel absolutely fine - no temp, no feeling ill, no fast heart rate etc nothing. Just this episode in the middle of the night last night!

Happened to me after birth too - think it’s just hormonal weirdness. It passed but the sweating was hideous!

rosie561 · 02/04/2021 19:06

I had awful night sweats after birth for the first few weeks. My friend had warned me about them. I also found (after researching) that breastfeeding can also cause hot flushes and I had them mainly at night time during her feeds, though sometimes in the day too. I'd say the hot flushes probably stopped after 6 weeks or so.

Congratulations on your new baby!

UnlikelybutTrue · 02/04/2021 19:07

Congratulations on your new baby beccyyl

My DD had hot flushes and night sweats postnatally that went on for a few months. I am menopausal and she was getting worse night sweats then me. Are you actually sweating as in your pj‘s are wet? If so could the shaking be because you’ve woken up after a night sweat and the sweat has gone cold? If you don’t feel unwell or have any wound soreness it sounds like it could well be hormonal.

AlakazamAlakazoom · 02/04/2021 19:08

I had the same experience nightly in the weeks following the birth of my second child (also not with my first). Ended up sleeping on a towel for the sweats. It vanished eventually thank goodness.

RandomMess · 02/04/2021 19:13

I had night sweats etc for 6 months after I stopped breastfeeding 😳 only after one of them, fine with the others 🤷🏽‍♀️

beckyyl · 02/04/2021 19:13

Well the sweats aren't too bad I can deal with them it was just the shaking that scared me. My teeth were chattering it was that bad I literally felt like I was freezing! Xx

Congratulations on your new baby! Flowers
I had mad night sweats too. Thought it was probably part of the hormonal rollercoaster.
Just keep an eye out for any sepsis type symptoms eg high temperature, feeling ill etc. - sounds like you're all over that anyway. Smile

BrokenLink · 02/04/2021 19:33

It sound like you may have a low grade infection following the birth. Call 111 and ask for advice.

RandomMess · 02/04/2021 19:36

I do agree you should be super aware that you could have an infection tbh.

crispychicken12 · 02/04/2021 19:39

I had this too, was really paranoid about it but it was normal apparently

OhShitShit · 02/04/2021 19:41

Ah the sweats. Why does nobody warn you about them?!

Look out for mastitis and other infections though. Mastitis comes on like flu, except with a bright red, devilishly painful area of boob, you’ll know if you have it.

You might not know if you had (e.g) retained placenta. That I would be wary of.

Did you have the shivering? X

I had this, it was an infection. I don't know why it was just at night though.

UnCoffreDor · 02/04/2021 20:09

Definitely seek medical advice as pps have said, it could be sign of an infection. Although it wasn't postnatally, a few hours before I gave birth I had similar symptoms which then turned out to be an infection. All the besg

CryMeALiver · 02/04/2021 20:10

I had this, once only, a few days after having DC2. My teeth were literally chattering. It was so weird. At the time I thought oh fuck, is this mastitis or something, I’m going to have to see the doctor tomorrow - but then I was completely fine and it never happened again. Hormones are weird.

SlipperFeet · 02/04/2021 20:10

I've had it with both my kids, with the shivering. It's horrible. Hope it goes soon!

CryMeALiver · 02/04/2021 20:11

Obvs if it happens again I would get medical advice though - might be an infection as PPs have said.

beckyyl · 02/04/2021 20:11

I've just called the postnatal ward and they've just told me to monitor it for the moment so hopefully it'll be ok! X

I’ve had 4 babies and never had his. It’s worth getting checked out though just in case you have an infection. My sister had sepsis after her second baby and had similar symptoms, was v scary. If it’s nothing then all good but always best to check it out.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/04/2021 20:13

In a novel I was reading, it said that it is the shock of not being pregnant anymore and that it stops if you hold the baby. I have no idea if this is true but was a belief in days of yore apparently.

Oatsamazing · 02/04/2021 20:15

I also had the shivering, just once, one night a few days after having my daughter

justforthis7 · 02/04/2021 20:16

Possibly an infection of some kind. I had shivering a few days after birth and it was a urine infection. Call the ward or your doctor, it needs looking into.

AlexaStop · 02/04/2021 20:16

I had this, nasty infection which led to sepsis. Keep an eye on your temp etc

User0ne · 02/04/2021 20:19

The shivering makes me think you should check with your GP to rule out infection. How are you feeling in yourself?

Having said that it could be hormonal and I know I would probably wait to see if it repeated. BUT I know that the sensible thing to do would be to get checked.
