Baby in discomfort and making strange noises at night

Hi, I am a first time mum and my girl is 15 days old, night time is something i dread, after a feed she seems in discomfort wriggling and pulling her legs up and she makes these noises, the noises are similar to grunts, she also sounds congested, wheezing and sometimes gasping. It gets worse when we put her in her moses. We wind her for a while and we have put her moses mattress on a slight incline. We feel helpless and very alone, can anyone help?

Either trying to poo or possibly colic. I thought they were a bit older though when colic started?

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 08:38

It isn't poo as she never has one when this happens, and she doesnt cry, so I didn't think it was colic. She only cries for a feed/nappy change

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/02/2019 08:39

But definitely talk to your HV rather than feeling alone. Babies do make a right fuss about having a poo sometimes.

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/02/2019 08:40

If she's not crying then that's a good sign. She can't be that uncomfy.

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 08:42

Yeah we are going to HV today. Thank you

Wind can occur in two places: upper which is when a burp is needed or lower when a fart is needed. Either way babies can't help themselves. Patting back will help with burping but a gentle tummy massage will help with farting or even needing to poo. Mine are much older now and I've long list the link to tummy massage but there are plenty out there. It was a life saver for my dd. We did it all the time and more often then not she'd do a fierce little trump or it would help her poo. We did it for months. It became part of our routine. She still ask a for it now if she has tummy ache and she is 6!

KenAdamsRealWife · 19/02/2019 08:59

My baby grunted in sleep until about 8 weeks old, I think it started around 6 weeks but both my babies did the grunting in sleep thing and I think it was down to their tummies but they was always asleep and didn’t wake them up, just kept me awake!! I was glad when that passed Wink

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 09:01

She seems in a lot of discomfort, I feel so helpless.

AmethystRaven · 19/02/2019 09:10

Probably just wind in her tiny little tubes and passages! My first was the same. As they grow and their little systems develop it gets better. Totally right to get it checked though.

Odd question but is the gasping a bit like a chicken noise?! My DD did this and it sounded awful but she was totally fine just windy. She sounded like a farmyard at night - DH hated it but once I had it confirmed it was nothing to worry about I didn't mind it too much.

And whoever invented the term 'sleeping like a baby' obviously never had one!! They can be so wriggly and noisy.

They should come with an instruction manual really Grin

AmethystRaven · 19/02/2019 09:12

Oh yes, baby massage! I was referred by the HV for it so maybe ask about that. It does help as PP said and it's a nice way to bond.

SoyDora · 19/02/2019 09:17

Mine is exactly the same (6 weeks now, it started at a few days old) and I’m pretty sure it’s wind. He doesn’t cry (he rarely cries anyway) but grunts/whinges/strains/pulls his legs up and looks like he’s in pain. It’s tough going, you have my sympathies.
I’m praying he grows out of it soon. In the meantime, probiotic drops have helped a bit, and making sure I wind him vigorously before putting him down.

drogon1 · 19/02/2019 09:23

Mine did exactly the same at that age, making the oddest noises and grunts when we put her down at night. She was sort of sleeping whilst doing it and it drove us crazy. We were told it was normal and it didnt last very long only a couple of weeks...which I appreciate feels like a lifetime with a newborn when you're sleep deprived.

justilou1 · 19/02/2019 09:29

Babies tend to “wake up” a bit at this stage and demand a bit more stimulus. Their little sleep/awake patterns start to go totally wonky and this is when you realize how nocturnal the little darlings start to become. They will be dead to the world at 9am and up to party between two and six.

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 10:02

She does sound like an animal, grunting and clicking noises. I feel so bad for her and so helpless, she's just woke now and has been sick whikst laid in her moses.

Bobfossil2 · 19/02/2019 10:04

Is she in discomfort or is she just making these noisy sounds? It’s really normal for newborns to sound like a farm animal! Honestly I had no idea until I had mine how noisy babies could be.
Mine was also sick a lot in the early days. It did settle but yes you must talk to your HV if you are at all concerned.

EstrellaDamn · 19/02/2019 10:06

Babies are soooooo noisy at night! Seriously, I had to move DD's Moses basket further away because I couldn't sleep for her absolute racket. As they get older and all their little tubes and passages get bigger it all seems less of a struggle.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/02/2019 10:39

Could it be reflux? Tilting the Moses basket isn't always enough.

Bigonesmallone3 · 19/02/2019 10:42

My dd used to do this! It was reflux, we wedged a couple rolled up muslins under the basket mattress so she was at a slight angle.
Make sure she is properly winded before laying her down.
Our dd did end up on ranitidine (amazing stuff) so u may need to speak to a gp/hv

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 12:38

Hi, she is in discomfort, she scrubchi3s her body up and her face goes red and she sometimes cries, not very often though, this morning she was doing it and I moved her legs back and forth from her tummy and rubbed her tummy and she let out some wind from her bottom

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 12:38

Thank you, will see what the HV says today

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 12:39

Oh I hope so! I feel so helpless to her

SumayyaMah · 19/02/2019 12:40

Possibly, she was sick twice this morning, will see what the HV says

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/02/2019 21:33

If it's wind, try cycling her legs and look at baby massage techniques. It helped my DS, hope the HV can help, mine was very non-committal, but the GP was more helpful!

RogueV · 20/02/2019 21:49

Babies are defo noisy at night. Little farm animals. DD 4 weeks old neighs, clicks, squeaks and grunts!

HerSymphonyAndSong · 20/02/2019 21:52

Google “grunting baby syndrome” which isn’t really a syndrome as such, it’s a description of normal baby behaviour, and they do grow out of it - might it be that?
