Sunburnt her face

Please do not slate me as I feel horrific as it is. We went out with our little one (6 weeks old) yesterday afternoon, she was in the pram with the hood up, it was cloudy but the sun kept peeking out, it wasn't until we got home I noticed her red cheeks, I put wet cotton wool pads on her to cool her down, she's not been phased one bit by it. When we've got up this morning I've noticed tiny blisters on her cheeks, what the hell do I do? Can I put baby lotion on her? Or carry on with cotton wool pads?
My poor little girl, I can't believe what a tool I've been :-(

If it was me I'd also want those blisters looked at by a doctor as your baby is so very little. Just to be on the safe side. You don't want it to get infected or not heal. The burn was an accident but not getting proper treatment wouldn't be.

MollyHuaCha · 05/05/2018 08:30

Young skin burns quickly. I would seek advice.

Wishing her well. I'm sure she'll be five, but I'd get her checked by a doctor/nurse anyway.

bonzo77 · 05/05/2018 08:34

I’d def get her seen. Looking at her skin and eyes, and reading what you’ve said about the weather etc I’m actually not convinced it’s definitely sun burn. Possibly some other skin thing like a reaction. Still, do get her seen.

Princess9891 · 05/05/2018 08:36

Hunky there is really no need for a comment like that. If she had said "oops my baby got sunburnt, oh well!!" Then you might have a point but this wasn't a malicious act.

OP we all make errors in judgement! Accidents happen! When my now 7 year old DD was a baby I walked through a doorway and knocked her head. I was in bits but she was perfectly fine and so will your little one just get her some medical attention as I am sure you intend to do. All the best :)

lavalamp08 · 05/05/2018 09:35

I rang 111 and we are up at A&E now, thank you all except honk woman whatever you are called, for you kind comments.

Ouchylegoblock · 05/05/2018 09:39

Hope all is ok op

MollyDaydream · 05/05/2018 09:45

I've had three babies and have never considered them getting sunburn while in a pram with the hood up! You've been really unlucky. Hope she is OK.

Pastaagain78 · 05/05/2018 09:59

Well done. Hope you get sorted soon.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 05/05/2018 09:59

Sunburn in a child that young may be seen as a sign of neglect and you may be having to answer questions. But you've done everything you can and accidents do happen and you misjudged. I'm sure you've learned from it.
hope she is ok.

Seahawk80 · 05/05/2018 10:00

Just to reassure you the midwives were lovely to me about it and understood that I was mortified. Ignore the nasty comments x

Smeddum · 05/05/2018 10:01

Glad you’re getting her seen OP, they’ll give you the best advice on how to help and also stop it happening again. Don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s a learning curve.

I had a UV cover thing for DS1s buggy that protected him from the sun (I have moles and had a suspect one removed as a child and DS1 has moles too so I was extremely paranoid). It was total overkill, but it reassured me.

Smeddum · 05/05/2018 10:02

I know your upset but I'm bloody furious you've done that to a little baby!

ODFOD, have you never ever made a mistake as a parent? Bollocks.

whirliebird · 05/05/2018 11:09

Actually coconut oil is different. It's very beneficial for many things including sunburn. Hope your little one is ok x

Nannyplumssillyoldelf · 05/05/2018 11:16

I got sunburnt the other day whilst wearing a coat so I can see how easily it could happen especially with this changeable weather we are having and it not being recommended to use sun cream on babies under 6 months. I hope she's seen soon and ok.

lljkk · 05/05/2018 11:24

What did they do for her at A&E?

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 05/05/2018 11:28

Coconut oil is NOT bloody different. It's an oil. It's also an Instagram fad that numpties now think is a cure for everything. Leave it in the wok where it belongs.. stupid advice to recommend putting it in a newborns burnt face

PonderLand · 05/05/2018 11:29

We've all been there op! My son is 2 now and I still get caught out with the weather.

earlybirdhasanap · 05/05/2018 11:49

Whirliebird of course coconut oil isn't different. It's still an oil.

lavalamp08 · 05/05/2018 11:53

Hi all, they gave her the once over, temperature, blood sugars, heartbeats thingy, then the doctor came, she advised aloe Vera / baby lotion or just carry on with cotton wool dipped in water. I did cry on the doctor cos I felt / feel so bad, she just said lesson learnt and now there'll never be a repeat performance.
I feel like I'm going all out now as I'm gonna order a UV sheet or whatever they are called, get the parasol fitted on, she will never feel sun burn again!!
Little Miss is currently non the wiser and laid chilling out
Thanks again for your positive comments and advice ☺️

@lavalamp08 I’m glad she’s been seen, I hope you feel a bit better now too Smile

mine was similar to this one

whirliebird · 05/05/2018 13:12

Rolypoly and earlybird, coconut oil is very different. It's antiviral and antibacterial and contains the same acid (lauric acid) as breast milk. It's a wonderful natural product which I've used to treat many things for myself and my 4 children. I'm certainly not the numpty around here.
Glad all turned out well for your daughter and she appears none the wiser x

bloomsburyer · 05/05/2018 13:52

Glad she's ok. What a worry Smile

megletthesecond · 05/05/2018 14:05

Glad she's ok. Hope you can have a quiet day now Flowers.
The buggy sun shades are invaluable on sunny days. I used to call ours the 'baby cave'.

lavalamp08 · 05/05/2018 21:18

Megletthesecond I'm worried about those shade sheet things as I've seen a lot of posts on Facebook saying how dangerous they are. Do I need to look for something specific??
Thanks xx

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 05/05/2018 21:23

I'm glad you've had her checked out. The issue with the shade things is that they shut out any breeze at all and the black fabric also means that baby can get very hot in there. We had one but used it with caution.
