Three months and counting, everyone! Our babies are gradually getting the hang of the world...and we are gradually getting the hang of them...

Thanks BG, have slowed down a little today also because DD decided she wasn't that keen on solids today so though we had 3 meals, she had less for lunch and tea. Breakfast was blueberries again which she loved. Definitely recommend letting LOs play with cherries and blueberries in their highchair, closely monitored.

On food introduction... For non-allergenic foods I simply introduce the food as she seems to like variety. In fact once she has something for the 3rd time, she seems to not eat as much of it. So far, sweet potato, nectarine, apple, banana and blueberries are favoured. While spinach takes some getting used to.

bear you look fab. Love the hair! and the dress

chinook · 11/07/2010 18:50

bc that sounds like a good day out to me. You definitely don't look like a harrassed new mum. I am impressed and envious.

Gosh it has been so hot here this weekend. Ds has been sleeping wih a fan on him but luckily he seems quite happy to be hot. He has been bf quite often to get more liquids in and I have never drunk so much water in my life as I worry that if I am dehydrated it will affect my milk supply.

I am definitely waiting until 26 weeks to start the weaning, for allergy, and laziness reasons. Love hearing your stories and seeing the pictures though. Although ds is not weaned, I did find a foreign object in his dirty nappy today. One of my hairs! I am surprised hair is resilient enough to survive a trip through a digestive tract. I will worry less about the damage my straightners are doing in future. Hope no one is eating as they read this.

I can smell that dp has taken the fresh bread out of the bread machine so I am off to scoff a big chunk. The question is do I have it with cheese or peanut butter? What the hell. I shall have both

SunnyBumpIsNowSunnyMummy · 11/07/2010 19:27

BC you look great! I'm obviously in dire need of a yummy mummy makeover!

Fizi so sorry about your cousin, I don't know how I missed such sad news, hugs.

ClimberChick · 11/07/2010 20:35

Morning ladies, Hope you've all had a good weekend.

I've set DH up on the March thread so he can't listen in on my posts. They're not far behind us, so more thread posting required.

We still continue to feed well, but slowly stocking up the freezer anyway. Teething still continues to be fun, I've not found lidocaine (sp?) gels over here yet, they all contain benzo summit. The days aren't too bad, its when she wakes in the night and can't be consoled for a while. Saying that, we're only having two wakings at the moment. Back to dream feeding about 11, with wakings at 3 and 6.

Bless her, she's hugging her massive giraffe in her bouncing chair whilst trying to sit up.

I've seen a few of you over the 4 month weaning thread, heated stuff. I'm amused by the people saying so your going to listen to the scientist, how could you possibly know not realises that there's quite a few scientists over there weaning at four months.

I'm quite proud of myself, as despite being quite sore, I've done my three bouts of exercise this week. Lets see how long I can keep it up for.

mamaloco · 12/07/2010 07:30

CC I agree that the thread on weaning at 4 months has become insane. Any weaning between 5 months and 7 months is on time. I am really upset as those people who think they know everything because they wait till 1 year to wean their babies (there are not many people admittting to weaning before 4 months!).
Apparently, the pead. thought I was to big for a girl at birth at 4.350 kg, so I was on a diet from the start . My mum think I was given baby rice from the start in my bottle, and dropped from the 99% to the 25% at 3 months with everybody being very pleased with themself , went back up till 98% at 1 year, and never been really fat or sick either.

And yes, I am a "biologist" and a researcher and started weaning "early", and I am convinced I am not damaging my DDs.

On that note, DH doesn't see the point of waiting a few more weeks, and keep asking why can't she have yogurt or bread (as DD2 try to grab food from her sister!), he even gave her some ice cream in the park ! DD1 was at least 2 yo when she tasted some ice cream.
I just checked my DDs' curves and DD2 doubled her birtweight at 16 weeks (started weaning at 18), DD1 doubled at 21 weeks and weaned at 21 week. So may be there is a link. I was trying to wait as long as possible for both (it would have been against medical advice for DD2 though, but she wasn't ready to wait so I guess the docs were right on that one ?).
Any one else found that correlation or is this just a coincidence?

Well done for all those who exercise!

BabyGiraffes · 12/07/2010 12:08

Another researcher here... . You might be on to something mamaloco. Both my girls had doubled their birth weight at 16 weeks and I started careful weaning at 18/19 weeks. With dd1 I waited slightly longer but was convinced she was ready because she was drinking 5x 8oz a day and tried to raid the fridge

fiziwizzle · 12/07/2010 12:18

Thank you everyone for your condolences. It is incredibly sad because he was one of those people you say is so full of life, he was the most full of life person I know. But he had always been ill, and 33 years is 23 more than they gave him when he was born. If there is one thing that an early death does, it makes you determined to make the most of your own life and count all your blessings too.

Weaning - DD doubled her birthweight a few weeks ago, she does try to grab at our food, but then she tries to grab at everything these days and put it in her mouth (our hands, my hair, the arm of a chair) and gets hugely angry if she can't fit it in (e.g. a balloon - thank goodness she didn't pop it). So I'm not sure that her food-grabbing is a sign of readiness. But then she is feeding more and more at night, it seems. I have been putting that down to her being so distracted during the day.

I gave her a piece of cold roasted butternut squash last week and she mouthed it but didn't seem to know what to do with it other than that.

fiziwizzle · 12/07/2010 12:33

Oh and at DrCC setting up DH on the March thread! Are you sure he won't stalk you on this one?!

BabyGiraffes · 12/07/2010 13:07

fizi forgot to say sorry about your cousin. I lost a cousin and also an older brother in his 30's a few years ago and it does make you realise how precious life is.

mamaloco · 12/07/2010 13:11

I just bought a second hand of those, www.ergobabycarrier.com/support/
very good for the little I have used it. I have to do the school runs in sept in commun transportations which won't allow wheelchairs or prams in, so I have been franctically looking for something practical.
the handicap people here (I have seen very little of them) must be confined at home, it is really sad.

DD2 has managed to grab her mobile on top of her cot, so I guess it has to go. I also guess it means that I have to lower the cot at the bottom position as she could probably try to pull up on the edges. Why can't I have a baby who stay a baby just for a little while?

BabyGiraffes · 12/07/2010 14:51

mamaloco I lowered the cot mattress last week and she is very firmly in a harness in her highchair now because she keeps standing up in it... Agree that I'd prefer her to stay tiny a little longer!!

BabyGiraffes · 12/07/2010 16:35

fizi I wouldn't know what to do with a piece of cold roasted butternut squash either...

CC good idea to divert your dh to the March thread . And hats off to your dh for getting on so well (had a nose around your blog . My dh was in charge for a few hours today. I'd already dressed the girls and given them breakfast and all he had to do was to walk dd1 to playgroup and pick her up again, and give dd2 lunch... When I got back he looked slightly harrassed and the kitchen was a battlefield. He's in charge again one afternoon this week which includes afternoon and bedtime bottle for dd2 and again taking and collecting dd1 from playgroup, plus dinner for both girls and himself. Oh, and bedtime... I'm sure he'll be fine and hopefully it shows him why I don't always get round to tidying the house etc etc.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 12/07/2010 20:04

Hi All!

Thanks for the good wishes. The journey was OK for me and DD, but a bit nightmarish for DH. The driving part was fine, but the Bay of Biscay had quite a swell on it and DH is a poor sailor, so he was ill and miserable (and the crossing is 18 hours in total, although it got a lot better when we reached the English Channel) - even I felt queasy for a few hours and I'm a good sailor. I recovered and DD was fine, although it was like breast feeding on a roller coaster. She woke a lot in the night, but did well considering the strange environment she was in.
Rest of the trip (driving to my sister's place) was fine. We're now ensconced and it's lovely to be with people who are very experienced with babies and love them. DD's 4 cousins (aged 4,6,8 and 10) are being really sweet to her and making a big fuss of her - she's giving them loads of smiles in return.

Sorry to hear your sad news, fizi.

Also, bad luck stoof - but good shout that you got so close, next time it'll be a slam dunk(!)

Weaning here is continuing as tasting things rather than more serious attempts to get DD to actually eat anything. Didn't know strawberries were supposed to be held in reserve, so she's enjoyed having a good gum at a couple of those. The latest studies (as pointed out in this thread!) seem to suggest that allergenic foods are introduced earlier rather than later (including peanut butter, dairy etc.) so I'm hoping the early strawberry experience won't cause any probs further down the line. DD still isn't hugely interested in food, but seems to enjoy tasting the various fresh fruit we've offered her. Pureed stuff hasn't found favour yet.

Sleep remains a restless and wakeful experience, but no worse than at home, so that's something I suppose (small comfort). Otherwise, it's lovely to be back - although the weather has been pretty miserable overall (typical!)

just marking my spot! hope everyone's well! welcome home (temporarily!) IC

watercress · 13/07/2010 10:19

Hello!

It's been so long since I was on here that I don't think I can comment on what everyone's been doing. But...

bearcrumble well done on the Boris interview. And great shoes!

fizi sorry for your loss.

IC glad you survived your journey.

stoof sorry you didn't get the job.

Everyone else, apologies for not saying anything specific.

We've been away for a few days as my sister graduated with her doctorate. Three days of parties (organised by me) all went off without a hitch.

Weaning is going well here (apart from a dodgy day yesterday). So far DD2 has had sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, strawberries (oops), apricots, peach, plum, apple, pear and raspberries. I puree in batches, then stir in baby rice, but the consistency tends to be a bit like mashed potato. Today I'm going to do a batch of potato. So far so good and she also loves her water beaker!

Has anyone bottle feeding gone onto fast flow teats yet?

watercress · 13/07/2010 10:20

Oh, and I'm staying well away from the weaning threads as well. My fragile sense of self can't cope with flamings for weaning at four and a half months...

InmaculadaConcepcion · 13/07/2010 10:54

I meant to add a shout to bc looking fab for the interview!

OP posts:
mamaloco · 13/07/2010 15:09

watercress no fast flow here actually went back on the 1 month old one from avent instead of the 0-6 from nuk, in an attempt to slown down her rate of drinking so she can register when she is full as advised by pead. (not brave enough to go against medical advices completely ).

weaning is good here too, celeriac, carrots, leek, courgettes, french beans (not good), sweet potatos (not so good), peaches (not so good), pear, bananas, apples, apricot, parsnip. That all I can recall for now, she eats it all though even the one she doesn't like she just makes a funny face and no humm hummm she usually does continuously when eating. I have just started her on a tiny bit of baby rice in the morning for breakfast as I can't find anything else suitable for babies here. She has sucked at a pepper, cucumber, bananas, cherries, eaten rapsberries, and chocolate ice cream still ! And want to try anything her sister put in her mouth (or little kids in the park) I have a monster!

BabyGiraffes · 13/07/2010 16:00

Nice to hear from you IC and watercress
Yes, I did change to fast flow a few weeks ago because dd2 got very cross with her bottles She has quite a temper on her and can hold a grudge for a surprisingly long time. She accidentally had her bedtime bottle about 20 minutes 'late' yesterday and was so cross with me that she refused to drink it for ages!
Oh and I find it interesting that she really does not care for fruit and prefers savoury instead. If I give her fruit puree she does a very cute full-body shiver... Today I offered her a spoonful of cooked frozen veg (sweetcorn, peas, carrots, beans) while dd1 and I had lunch. She thought that was fabulous (I think she liked the colours) and experimentally chewed on a few bits I held for her.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 13/07/2010 20:33

Just had our most successful bit of weaning when we introduced some Organix baby porridge to DD - she was very keen, although I'm not sure how much of it she actually swallowed!
It included milk, but I figured as DD was mix fed for the first few weeks of her life without ill-effects from the formula, she's already been exposed to dairy products anyway.

GuernseyFrench · 14/07/2010 06:54

Just a quick post as it has been a while since I last posted.

Weaning is going great but DS has not understood that he should have less bottles/milk as he now eat other things.

I use Avent teats no. 3, so not a very fast flow yet.

I am soo tired with waking up several times a night and then having to be up at 6am to go to work. I hate it! Want to be a SAHM.

I am shocked Mini Mode (from Boots) is stopping on 31st August! They already have stopped their internet ordering. I buy lot of stuff from them on the net as it's quite cheap...

Must go and wake up DS

BabyGiraffes · 14/07/2010 19:29

Here's dd2 embracing baby led weaning...
picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/5ljC_nQez8wwYNYxBgvWb-4BEwY4nrpFrRr0Z0d6vjY?feat=directlink and
picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/zUarDWeve8mkhdEUpgNiP-4BEwY4nrpFrRr0Z0d6vjY?feat=directlink

I am still a bit dubious about strict baby led weaning but thought I'd have an open mind and see what happens... I've never seen anyone so excited by broccoli!!
Having said that, I will NOT let dd2 loose on soups, stews, bakes etc. but I am happy to let her have suitable finger food...
IC exciting news on your LO enjoying baby porridge!

raindroprhyme · 14/07/2010 22:34

i have been doing purees with Ds but was in macdonalds with DS2 and his friend today as a treat and DS3 did his first baby led weaning. By the time i had sorted out the other two boys happy meals etc DS3 had consumed half my chips.

GuernseyFrench · 15/07/2010 07:01

raindrop

Another night with another feed at 3am... We use not to sleep through but at least I didn't have to feed him at 2-3 am like in the first 3 months. I hope he'll go back to not feeding at night... Fingers crossed

BabyGiraffes · 15/07/2010 08:25
