Three months and counting, everyone! Our babies are gradually getting the hang of the world...and we are gradually getting the hang of them...

bethylou my DS is also doing this.

He is still trying to roll onto his belly, he does it if we give him a little push but can go very easily from his belly to his back. He is much better, still with a blocked nose but his coughing has improved. We're back at the GP tomorrow to check on his improvements.

He enjoys his purees, at the present we're on carrot purees. I'm doing the 4 days rules; are your weaners doing it too?

Here is the pureed carrot
Weather is still warm over here which is great to dry the nappies and clothes.

BabyGiraffes · 08/07/2010 19:30

GF great picture! Looks like he's enjoying it, too! And what a cutie. Not sure what the four days rule is but I did start with carrot or sweet potato but have been happily mixing and experimenting since
sunangel I am sure you are doing fine on the weaning. As long as she does not cut down too much on her milk then you can't do much wrong
I'm a bit about the idea of BLW... surely it's always baby led because they spit out what they don't like. If I went for 'BLW' in the strictest sense I don't think dd2 would get much to eat... If I give her a spoon in her right hand she will 'feed' herself but just as often try to stick it in her ear. If I give her food to hold in her left hand she will style her hair with it... Definitely for me spoon feeding plus finger food is the right way to go.

BabyGiraffes · 08/07/2010 19:38

Oh, and I keep forgetting I am also a fan of the Ikea highchair. We use it for weekends away and she loves it with a cushion behind her so she can't throw herself backwards in excitement... In her Trip Trap at home she keeps bobbing up and down trying to stand up (her toes can reach the footrest) and I have now put a harness on just in case. And I've just put away her bouncy chair because she kept doing sit-ups in it and it scared me...
Absolutely no luck with the rolling over yet though... dd2 does try her best and hasn't a clue... Amazing that some babies on this thread did it at 11 weeks if I remember rightly.
Well, they all get there in the end . Remember meeting a baby when dd1 was this age, who was crawling (well, robbing on knees and elbows) at 5 months and she was fast! Also a friend of mine, one of twins, walked at 9 months - she says she had to because with 4 older siblings she had to get up and run away! And then again another friend's little one did not walk until 18 months... They really are all different and individuals and gorgeous

GuernseyFrench · 08/07/2010 19:50

BG thanks, he for sure enjoys his food, he cries when I finish feeding him (he also do that with his bottles! )

The 4 days rule is that you give LO for 4 days the same food to see if they do allergy then once you know it's okay, you can introduce another food.

stoofadoof · 08/07/2010 20:57

balls

didn't get it

scored joint first in the interview, they dropped back to the shortlisting scores to make a decision and the other person scored marginally higher? pants

still, i thought it had gone ok, and it had, so i'm not going to let it knock my confidence too much!! (maybe)

am still two stones heavier than i was when fell pregnant with DS, and three stones heavier than with DD. BEing back at work now i'm finding it easier to eat sensibly, so hoping to get it all shifted by the end of the year. My shape has changed too, my thighs have become enormous with second pregnancy, but my stomach is horrendous.. want to get a bit more weight off then get back running again - if I went now i'd knacker my knees in no time road running? i find it helps my mental health too!

BabyGiraffes · 08/07/2010 21:43

stoof so sorry you didn't get it

bethylou · 08/07/2010 22:04

Sorry Stoof - sounds like went well, despite not the desired result, so hopefully another will come along soon.

CC have been wondering for a while whether to whisper the word 'reflux' quietly at you regarding the things you have mentioned about your DD. Perhaps you might want to read up about it (silent reflux if she's not sicky). The screaming feeds are hell. They finished off the breastfeedind with DS1 and I then pumped half his feeds for the following month. This time though, I really can't fit that into our busy lives. Tried formula in desperation the other day, DS2 took one mouthful, spat it out and went back on the boob. It helps me to remember that it is pain that causes the problem, it is not a behaviour. Still horrid though.

Had a meltdown tonight about DH going to weekly football sessio during tea-bath-bed (for two). He didn't go in the end and sure the neighbours enjoyed the argument (through the open window - whoops!). Now on red wine therapy.. but all ok!

ClimberChick · 08/07/2010 23:45

beth had thought about reflux but wasn't sure as it comes and goes which suggested to me that is was more behavioral (not that I think she's being naughty), but feel to free to correct me and point me in the right direction. Also she's always been fine with the bottles and she was fine before the nursing strike. As I said (touch all types of wood) she's been great the last week.

BabyGiraffes · 09/07/2010 09:03

Why is it that I have to go and wake my sleeping beauties close to 8 o'clock when we have to get somewhere on time, but come the weekend they will always be up bright and early??

fiziwizzle · 09/07/2010 09:52

BG.... because it is always the way!

Bad luck stoof but really don't let it dent your confidence, you did great . You will get the next one!!

IC hope your journey is going well.

GF what a cutie.

We had a sad/happy day yesterday. Went to the funeral of my second cousin who was only 33, and such a star. Incredibly sad but also inspiring all the wonderful tributes that were paid. It really does make you realise how precious life is, and especially now that we are mothers. I made a vow to stop whinging about little things (mainly DP leaving mess everywhere; and the blimmin dog) and be grateful for what I have.

DD was a little angel. Quiet as a mouse throughout the service and was happily passed from family member to family member the whole day. Only had a meltdown in in the car on the way home, and I felt like crying too, it was so hot.

Another hectic weekend coming up, we're going to my cousin's DD's third birthday bbq and staying over so that DP can have a drink. I would rather wake up in my own bed - but I am grateful that I will have a lovely time .

mamaloco · 09/07/2010 11:35

GF glad your DS is on the mend. I do the rule too for weaning but it is 3 servings (usually 3 days). It is not only great for the allergies but that way you can check how the guts react to certain food (i.e. bananas constipate DD2)
All cute babies on those pictures, but your purees are much runnier than mine, the ones I make look more like mash.
Sorry stoof but that's a great result, and bode well for the future.
I agree with BLW being really messy (but you have to let them eat by themself sooner or later), and yes baby spit out if they don't want too eat so any kind of weaning is baby led. I have seen one example to BLW gone to far. When a 2 yo at a party (at a freind's house) was still picking what he wanted from his parents plates and running around and playing while eating. The poor host had to wash almost her entire house next day because there was food everywhere.

BabyGiraffes · 09/07/2010 12:32

mamaloco mine is normally like mash too but the beetroot had a grainy texture and kept falling off the spoon leaving the juice behind...

SunnyBumpIsNowSunnyMummy · 09/07/2010 15:36

Hugs bethylou, at least your meltdown was actually about something, mine are more random

Stoof that's pants, just remember 'What's for you won't go by you'. There's bound to be something better round the corner so hang in there.

CC be careful about pumping one boob more, it can make you lopsided. You might not care but thought it was worth a mention

Still on just milk here but DS nearly nicked my sandwich when I was out for lunch so we nearly went BLW - not sure a BLT is the best start though

I've been at the sports centre 3 times this week and DS has been at the creche while I've been to a class. He seems fine with it and the bonus is he sleeps for ages after as it's so exciting watching all the big kids play.

ClimberChick · 09/07/2010 17:05

good effort sunny. I've done my second run this week and going to do -jump-- around like a maniac some beach volleyball this evening. (oooh check me out).
However, I stepped up the intensity of my run and had real pf issues. It was a real pain as physically I felt great. I also checked last nite and my stomach muscles still have a gap, so I better get online and look that up (left the leaflets back in the UK). My new resolution is to spend the bus journey doing these exercises.

The boob I intend to pump a little more is already the smaller one, so hopefully it'll even it out.

To those who have started weaning, did you wait until they had doubled their birth weight or this is one of the signs that's actually meaningless? Or do you all just introduce food after a feed? We're still a few weeks away I reckon from giving a proper go.

bearcrumble · 09/07/2010 17:07

Hi All,

Fizi So sorry about the loss of your cousin. You are right that things like that really do put the small stuff into perspective. Well done the baby for behaving so well.

Very interesting to read all about weaning and the various approaches you're all taking. DS is 21 weeks on Monday and we've given him the odd bit of food to hold/play with/gum for about the last 10 days, but not every day - just when we remember. He held a cooked broccoli floret first and I think a tiny bit went in his mouth, he's licked some avocado but when I mushed some up and put it in his mouth he spat it out. He's licked cooked sweet pepper and seemed to like that taste. He munched on a strawberry I was holding (tbh I think he thought it was a nipple and sort of nursed on it) but made some funny faces when the juice started to come out. That's about it. Will probably wait til 24 weeks to try actual feeding. Will probably do a mixture of purees and finger food.

I'm a bit nervous of him choking on lumps of stuff as regards BLW.

Sleeping hasn't been much fun the past 4 - 5 days. I had three really good nights before that but he's been so fidgety and wakeful. I co-sleep (safely) for ease of night feeds but I'm wondering if he's started saving up his hunger for night time. I seem to be feeding all the time at night and he's less and less hungry during the day. When I try to give him boob during the day he'll not have that much or go long periods between feeds. I'm really quite worried. DH says I'm getting really ratty by late afternoon and co sleeping isn't working and he is getting miserable that we sleep in separate rooms now. Don't know what to do. I don't want to sleep in a different room to DS until he's 6 months at least but the last few nights have been pretty dire. I fall asleep in contorted positions and then wake up with a dead arm from having really horrible strange dreams and I haven't even been looking at my phone to see what time/how often we're waking and feeding. Maybe I need to refuse night feeds unless it's 4 hours since the last one.

We did our first long car journey - went to Somerset from tues-thurs. He behaved really well and slept for most of the journey in his car seat.

Today I went to city hall to interview Boris for mumsnet. I think the video will be up later tonight. I don't know why but my voice went really posh and stupid when I was asking him questions so I don't think I can bear to watch it. I haven't told any of my RL friends. It was fun though and the other two MNetters were really nice as were Justine and Nancy from MN towers. We had a drink afterwards and I didn't worry too much about DH looking after the baby. First time I left him I was texting constantly.

We are camped in the kitchen as its the coolest room - with a fan going. It is so hot in London today.

GuernseyFrench · 09/07/2010 19:03

OMG! As said yesterday, DS discovered his willy... the only problem is that he wants to hold it while I'm cleaning his bum after dirty nappies... hence a pooey hand waving everywhere

How much are you DC eating? DS could easily eating a full jar of food (today it was a jar) in one seating.

You're right my pureed carrot was very runny, I need to thick it with potato or quinoa. I'll improve next time. DS also started to eat pureed at nursery and as usual ate everything they gave him.

He's now falling asleep, fingers crossed that he'll sleep for a few hours as I really fancy a pampering evening.

BabyGiraffes · 09/07/2010 19:26

GF baby rice is brilliant for thickening things I found

bethylou · 09/07/2010 22:30

GF with you on the pooey hands! Third morning running I walso had sick all down my back before 7a.m - a habit I would like to break. Oh yes, and another shot down the inside of my bra this afternoon just as I was off to the chiropractor! What fun..

Fizi sorry for your loss - really puts things in perspective doesn't it?

CC Don't be put off thinking reflux due to ups and downs - it seems to go in cycles here (and we're currently on a down ) and only got really bad with DS1 at 3 months. Worth reading about it certainly. Also, refluxy babies do tend to do a bit better on bottles as the reflux is less of a problem when they are upright - I end up breast feeding in all sorts of contorted positions to try and get DS2 as upright as poss. The good news is that once babies start to crawl/sit etc.. it eases. The more you look into it though, the more you may find it explains any sleep pronlems etc.. too.

BC sounds really exciting! Will try and look at it at a slightly earlier hour over the weekend!

BG Totally agree about early waking at the weekend. Have you tried a magic light that comes on (courtesy of a timer - just don't tell my DS1) when it's wake up time? At least keeps him in bed till 7a.m!

Sunny thanks for the sympathy - a better day here and more nice red wine (a whole year's worth to make up for obviously...)

ClimberChick · 10/07/2010 01:51

thanks bethylou had a look and if it is reflux, then we already seem to be doing all we can without medication (little and frequent feed/dummy/upright/sling etc.). We're seeing a peadiatrician next week so will mention it and see what they say. Did someone on here say that they're LO has silent reflux? She has taken to sleeping on her side and generally rolls everywhere atm. She was one of the early rollers so hopefully she'll be an early crawler and that will help things along.

In the meantime make sure you eat lots of goodies and I will enjoy our good period while it lasts.

bearcrumble · 10/07/2010 07:03

Here's me and the other Mumsnetters (Ronshar and LadyBlahBlah) and Justine and Boris.

I'm on the end in the brown flowery dress and dark hair.

ClimberChick · 10/07/2010 07:35

bear you look lush

fiziwizzle · 10/07/2010 09:59

How exciting bc! What was it like and how did you get involved? You look lovely .

I'm having the same thing with DD wanting to feed at night rather than during the day. She's so distracted, the slightest sound or movement and she wants to know what's going on, no matter how much I try to put her back on the breast. She's definitely making up for it at night. I don't know what the answer is but I feel your pain .

mamaloco · 10/07/2010 10:23

fizzy sorry about your cousin. You sound so restrained. I hope you are OK. I lost my step-brother when DD was less than a year and it was devastating but having her around really helped everybody at the funeral and me in my everyday life of course.
CC I do weaning before a feed. (but I am trying to make her have less milk). And yes she had doubled her birthweight or reach 7kg before we started (which ever comes first), but I didn't exactely looked at it, the other signs were really obvious like helping herself from our plates. (I had to "rescue" bread, jam, couscous, mince, cucumber, curried rice, ham, ... before I had her in her highchair )
strawberries you should wait till past a year for those, unless they are cooked. (as with rapsberry, blackberries Kiwis, and other well known allergens). Saying that don't worry, DD1 fed her rapsberries to DD2, 3 days ago. She had 3 before I noticed it, and she is fine (her first proper food not mashed or cooked! ) "but mum! she likes it"
GF I am with you and the chocking, I leave lumps in my purees and DD2 gags on it, and it is really scary, not so sure about BLW so young.
bear you looked fab. I am sure you are the only one noticing about your voice. don't worry.

GuernseyFrench · 10/07/2010 16:06

mamaloco I'm also trying to wean before his feed but he likes his food so much that I can't always make him take less milk. He's going to be a little big boy if it's continue but as he moves a lot I hope he burns some calories.

My purees are smooth but a bit too runny, I'll try baby rice. thanks for the tip BG

BabyGiraffes · 10/07/2010 18:57

bearcrumble gosh you look smart!! ... Smart for me these days is when my jeans and t-shirt are not covered in baby sick . I did take myself off to have my hair cut today though, so feel a little smarter already..

Great news here, LO can now roll back to front but then gets cross because she doesn't know how to get back...

I'm also getting slightly over my fear of LO choking and have let her chew on a banana and a small piece of toast. I think I was over-cautious because dd1 once choked really badly on a piece of mango (surprisingly rubbery texture) despite having 4 teeth at the time...
